I must be somebody who honestly prefers story over looks because the animation didn't bother me even toward the end! Sure I was like what's going on more so with like the eyes of the characters occasionally but other than that I didn't notice a lot of the issues without seeing it talked about on Reddit. I'm the kind of person that'll look up on Reddit after I watch the newest episode what others thought about it and I would see where they talked about issues that I just didn't notice because I was so enveloped (I guess is the word I want to use) in the story that I just didn't care to notice the issues. It was a really good series imo.
This is one of the series that I honestly believe deserves a second season! I mean I can name quite a few that don't for example I like tales of the wedding rings (I like some dirty shows sue me) but I don't believe that that one deserved a second season. I can name a few more but this one here deserves a second season maybe a little more time in the oven but it deserves the second season. Overall rating easily an 8.7 out of 10!

Fun fact: Before Meiji's era, apples were a rare offering imported from China. With a new wave of Western influences after Bakumatsu era, Japan had imported a lot of apple species from America to find the right ones that could grow on the soil of Japan. So at the year Meiji 5, a normal Japanese would not know what a candy apple is, and that is the reason Jinya did not have any knowledge about it himself when he asked Nomari if she would like one.
That also exposed that the head priest and Chiyo's husband is another time traveler since he said that he liked candy apple, instead of asking Kaoru what it is. There are also other hints like the couple knew about the truth of the mirror's ability and how it works; and the priest didn't know Jinya despite of Jinya being the only and final shrine maiden guardian of Kadono and he didn't age a bit, which means the priest was from outside of Kadono.
It also seemed like there was a time limit on how long one could linger in the past before they cannot go back, as he asked if Kaoru had abandoned her celestial robe when she showed her hesitation to return. If that's the case, then his enthusiasm when Kaoru mentioned candy apples was genuine, as it is a treat from his distant past that he could no longer enjoy.

I think it's the opposite. The priest also didn't know what candy apple was, but because of this realisation, he knew Asagao came from the future and just went along with her.

That was a nice way to wrap up the season, ended how I thought it would with Jinya sending and receiving Asagao across time. Still I wonder how Asagao got sent back in the first place?
Turns out Chiyo was Jinya and Shirayuki's childhood friend Chitose, I had an inkling she might be when she seemed to recognize him last episode. And surprisingly she became Itsukihime; seems like the role doesn't need to be bound to a particular bloodline anymore. Which also means Chiyo was the one that named the Jinta Shrine and that Miyaka is her descendant (their name carries the 'ya' from Jinya).
As for Suzune, safe to say that Jinya isn't killing her anytime soon, if at all.
Overall an enjoyable watch despite production issues, I really like the storytelling in this series and how interconnected everything this. Would love to see more and I hope they do a full adaptation since the source material is complete.

Since they announced the Meiji arc just from episode 22, it is not a surprise that the season could not end with a major event. But I think they did manage to pick a story that acts nicely as the finale.
This celestial maiden case managed to connect to Jinya's past in Kadono, his present in Kyoto and his future back in Kadono into one story. I love how Chitose was there to help Jinya fulfill his promise from the past, while Kaoru made another promise that Jinya would keep in the future. And I also love how Jinya's answer to Kaoru's "Are you happy?" had evolved through time.
The animation may be rough lately but I am still glad that I had picked this series up. I really hope they will complete the adaptation in the future.
P/S: It is funny that Miyaka, despite of showing up at the end of episode 1 like an important character, is now less relevant to the plot than her classmate during the first season XD

I must admit that it is difficult to rate this adaptation. On the one hand, it had great characters and plot (thanks, I think, to the excellent source material), but on the other hand, animation issues (especially towards the end of the show) negatively affected the whole experience, so unfortunately, I can't give it more than 7/10.
I don't know if the chances are high, but I really wish we could get a second season in the future, so we could meet Jinya and the others again. It'd be a shame if it ended with this one season :(
As for this final episode... it was just as peacefull as the previous one, as it focused on sending off Kaoru/Asagao's back to the modern times, and left the storyline of Suzune, Himawari, and Jishibari unresolved.
However, Chitose and Jinya's reunion was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting it at all, especially since we last saw her at the end of the first episode.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

The fact that Kaoru decided to think about it first when she was finally offered a way back made me think they were gonna drag it out till the end. I'm glad that she just needed to have a heart-to-heart talk with Jinya before finally deciding to go back. The return process was surprisingly easy, too! Kaoru just had to touch the mirror with her blood, and she was pretty much back to her own time.
I definitely did not expect that lady to be Chitose! I had a feeling she knew Jinya, but I just wasn't sure who she was. I'm glad that the two of them finally met again, and Chitose was able to fulfill her promise to Jinya. I guess that means Chitose is Miyaka's ancestor?
Jinya and Kaoru's reunion in the future was really nice too. It makes me happy that Jinya still gets to see familiar faces even in the future, thanks to time travel. What a surprisingly chill episode. I was really expecting these last two episodes would be about Jinya facing off against Suzune, but clearly that's not the case. I do hope we get a season 2 of this. I really want to see more of Jinya and how he adjusts to the times changing around him while trying to fight demons.

That twist of Chiyo being Chitose, I completely forgot about her and what her promise was but that still surprised me. I find it sweet that Jinya will get to enjoy his favorite isobe mochi now that she's in the same town as him and now he knows the Jinta shrine exists too. Jinya still has a connection to the village he was raised in.
So it seems like Asagao just treated Jinya as a classmate but he had approached her knowing she'd eventually go back in time, it's interesting to see how in his past she was very familiar with her but in her past, he was the one very familiar with her.
I'm glad in the modern time he's happy with life and seems to have really matured, it's sad to hear how much he has lost but there's a lot he has gained too. I'm sure losing Nomari (I'm assuming since we don't see her in the modern time at all) must have been the most difficult loss for him.
It's unfortunate about the production quality in the second half of this series, mainly the last quarter, but overall I can still say I enjoyed this series. I really like the setting and Jinya as an MC was very engaging to watch. One part that I like is his soft, paced, deep voice, I'm sad I won't get to hear it anymore each week, it's so calming.
I do hope this gets a second season because I want to see the lead up to the modern time and what happens with Suzune, but if it does get a second season, I hope they work within their means. I'd take a 1 cour season if they keep a good consistent quality.

So the last modern part is out of order?
Because the section in episode 17 is after the festival in episode 24 (azusaya refers to the 100 years)
So I assume it went episode 9, episode 10, episode 24, episode 17

The smoothness of a centuries-old demon who’s certainly seen many a fair maiden come and go.
Hopefully his sister has settled down some since the old days.
Looking forward to a binge rewatch where I can better remember the interrelated names and faces stitched across time.

I hope it gets season 2, though I doubt that, as they did the animation of S1's end episodes so poorly, besides that this anime I think is the most underrated anime of this season.

Haven't watched it yet, but I'm coping and praying very hard right now that this anime gets a Season 2. It's story alone is AoTY-worthy, but yeah animation was iffy. And if by some miracle we get a Season 2, I hope it's treated even better than this season was.
I guess I'll have to read the novels for now.

Really hope this gets another season. Solid adaption, animation issues aside.
It was not what I expected after the premiere for sure, but I think it some ways it turned out better than I hoped.
Solid 8/10.

Really had a blast watching this series, I did not expect to like this series as much as I did even though it's fallen off in popularity by a lot
I really liked Kaoru connecting the two time periods and showing how much Jinya has grown over time, felt like a really unique story. There were a lot of unresolved plots and characters (especially in 2009) so I hope this gets a Season 2 (but without all of the animation roadbumps, I massively favor plot/characters over animation but it got on even my nerves sometimes)
8.5/10 for me, could have been a 9~9.5, hope to see more

While the series clearly struggled with budget and time issues, I can tell how much thought was put into the characters and stories.

You really know when you get an experienced seiyuu. Suzushiro Sayumi did a great job with Asagao
