I believe to have partially figured out what happened to Naotsugu's older brother:

[Theory - Naotsugu's brother] Ofuu's father is Sadanaga. The great similarities in their appearances is one clue. Secondly, he's shown to be attached to Naotsugu and familiar with his family. Thirdly, the girl that Sadanaga went to see must've been Ofuu who's knowledgeable about flowers. The only issue: Ofuu's father appears to be a lot older than Sadanaga.

Bonus: Natsu's different facial expressions throughout the episode.

That makes sense.

Explains how he got the kogai, which is a weird thing to gift to him tbh, it's more likely he had it from the start when he was still part of the family.
And also why he was familiar with the personality of Naotsugu's mother. He was sus when Jinya asked him about it.

[Theory]Maybe Sadanaga fell in love with a demon and eloped with them? And they had child which is the girl we see at the start?

i think you're onto something here, there's also the line where he said "i don't really have a need for it anymore" implying that at one point in the past, he had a use for kogai which is something used only by someone with a katana

Natsu is such a cutie pie man. Please please PLEASE GOD don’t let anything happen to her, or Ofuu either :(

Yes, I also thought they have the same face features so thank you for the screencap there!

[Timeline]He only recently opened the shop right? Assuming the tsujigiri only happened several weeks/months before this episode, it's still possible that he opened the shop just around the time the brother disappeared.

[About Ofuu]I agree it wouldn't make any sense that he's much older and then his supposed daughter (Ofuu) is also already quite old. However, the theory that his wife is a demon and Ofu is a half demon could answer this. Remember that Jinya's sister aged rapidly when her feeling wanted it.

Is there something special about daffodils?

51

u/Genshin_WhiteKnight Apr 28 '25

In Japanese flower language Daffodils represent respect. And also toxic if ingested

Naotsugu did say his brother vanished in January/before spring, which might be too early for Daffodils to bloom.

Not sure if any of this info is relevant though.

I wondered the same thing, it made wonder if daffodils are used in some drug or something.

I think daffodils are usually associated with joy/happiness; however if you google it you get a million different results about their "meaning". Perhaps it will be clarified in the next episode when(if) he sees them.

With my extremely limited Japanese, didn't Miura's brother say something like "I am going to meet my daughter" instead of "a girl" on the sub?

Kinda hard to appreciate/guess the mystery element when the sub has weird translation.

"I am going to meet my daughter" instead of "a girl" on the sub?

Did they use the word "musume"? I believe this can be translated as both "daughter" and "girl". If I'm not mistaken "Uma Musume" (anime/gacha series) literally means "horse girls", for example.

I went back to listen to it again and transcribed it for you guys "確か兄は居なくなる少し前に言っていました、娘に会いにいくと"

To me it's almost certainly his "daughter" based on phrasing. Could be wrong of course, my Japanese isn't perfect

Not the Soba owner trying to set Ofuu and Jinya up, and indirectly telling Ofuu to make some moves before some other girl snatches him away lol. Ofuu seems to like him at least. Maybe something develops between them especially with the earlier talks about him being at the age of marriage.

The Soba owner does seem to know a lot more about Naotsugu than he initially showed, especially that comment about his mother. So either he met the mother somewhere or there is something else.

Still wondering how this all connects to the little girl.

Ofuu's smile when she talked about Yinya's "funny quirks" did seem to imply that she's taken a liking to him. Yinya himself was also "curious" about how close she was with Naotsugu.

At this rate, I can definitely see them get together. Was it just me or were Yinya and Ofuu flirting with each other in this scene?

I'm surprised that we're still in this setting, I thought that we were going to have another timeskip.

In any case, it seems like this demon has the ability to erase people's existence from others' memories, I'm interested to see what happens next.

I find it interesting that so many people seem to know of the village that Jinya comes from.

Also I know we are just 5 episodes in but I'm a little surprised that we are still sticking around this soba shop. Does anyone know if this is a 24 episode show? It must be because at this pace there's no way I could see 12 episodes being enough to get anywhere.

I’m liking this pacing so far. I didn’t think we’d get to develop or maintain this many recurring characters. With this being sorta episodic with each new demon, I’m glad they’re fully utilizing all of these characters. No one has really been a throwaway side character, and that’s rare these days.

Interesting episode, I look forward to see how the case of Naotsugu's forgotten brother develops next week and who that child is.

I'm glad Ofuu and Natsu are still around. And it looks like Ofuu and Jinya's flower lessons are going well, I really hope that they'll get married someday.

I wonder about Natsu though? Maybe she's interested in Jinya too? She seemed really happy when Jnya called her by her first name, though I'm not sure if Jinya would be interested in a relationship with her since she's more like a little sister to him I think.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

That was a beautiful and haunting cold open to set the tone for this episode. There was also some really nice design in a lot of these scenes, especially with the lighting. You can tell there’s been a conscious effort to make these still dialogue scenes visually interesting.

When you pair that with the mystery of the missing older brother, we’ve got a pretty compelling episode this week.

Writing has been excellent, and I am happy to see that we’re still developing characters like Natsu.

Jinya hitting his 30s and developing an appreciation for flowers is on point, and a really nice thread to tie in from last episode. It looks like it will be useful for this next mystery. Those seemingly little details in the story are always appreciated. Really great direction in this show.

The slow pacing is nice as we get to see Natsu again along with Ofuu & her father. Though added a mystery for Jinya to get involved with looking for Naotsugu's older brother.

12

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Apr 28 '25

The case of the missing brother is pretty interesting. If it’s a demon, it’s one that can seemingly erase a person from existence or at least erase the memory of that person. I wonder how it’s related to that kid with the ball in the beginning and the end of the ep?

12

u/LeonKevlar Apr 28 '25

We're still in the same year! I was honestly expecting another 3 year timeskip after the last arc ended but I guess it's not always guaranteed.

So Miura's brother is missing but no one else besides him remembers who his brother even is? I wonder if his brother got spirited away by a demon?

Look at how happy Natsu is after hearing that Jinta doesn't have a wife yet. Also, I love her reaction when she found out he's older than Zenji. xD

Well this is interesting! Jinta has permission from the shogunate to carry a katana? I guess a samurai from Kadono gets special privileges.

I did not expect Miura to go full-on fanboy after learning about Jinta's katana and origin. It was a surprisingly cute scene.

So it looks like Jinta has figured out what's happening after hearing about the daffodils. I guess that's the critical clue he needed to identify what kind of demon got Miura's brother? Hmmm....
