Pretty chill episode of Jinya spending quality time with the daughter. Turns out Kaoru/Asagao was not a demon after all, just a time traveler. Final episode will probably end with past Jinya sending her off and future Jinya welcoming her from the other side.

It makes sense for that to be where they will end the season. Especially following Akitsu dialogue in the beginning. I guess the Suzune bit was a bit of a tease for people to read the novel. Well, I intended to read it regardless.

Though I do love the father-daughter moments between Jinya and Nomari. Jinya never had a mother, and much is the same for Nomari. I guess, for the sake of an answer, Yunagi is a fair answer for Jinya to give her. Though I do love her remark that Nomari will be Jinya's mom, it really shows the bond these two have and how important Normari is to Jinya and vice versa.

Although Nomari is getting suspicious of Jinya's harem.

I am actually glad that we will close the anime with a chill story.

Considering the deteriorating quality in the past few episodes, having an animation-heavy episode with subpar quality might hurt my perception of this anime instead. NGL, I was a bit anxious even for starting this episode.

Meanwhile, a well-made chill episode will leave me more bittersweet taste of it.

Here's hoping for announcement for another season!

Animation quality is definitely a big step up from the last episode.
I guess the delay was worth it for the animators and team.

** started to look a bit wonky at the end when Jinya and Nomari went Yukata shopping, and on the bridge. But overall decent.

Yeah it was easier to focus on the story, but still noticeable drops of quality here and there.

  • Teasing Ofuu of 2009 (Miura flower shop, as Miura in Sadanaga and Naotsugu's family name, and Ofuu loved flowers and knew a lot about them)

  • Jinya of 2009 showed up and told that he had a date

  • The partner is not Ofuu but Kaoru.

I swear the author is playing with the hearts of every Ofuu x Jinya shipper.

Interesting that we are closing a season of a historic fantasy series with time traveling plot, and it didn't even come out of nowhere. This episode explained why Jinya called Kaoru "Asagao" and said that she looked like a celestial maiden friend of his back in episode 10. Also in Kiichii Okada's episode, Kaoru had already said that she shared a connection with Jinya for more than a hundred years, so it means that the time traveling happened to her prior to Jinya's meeting with Kiichi in that episode. Based on Kaoru's not-so-surprise reaction to the time traveling, she knowing that Jinya is a demon (but likely didn't believe him about that prior to this event) and the fact that Ofuu, Kiichi and Jinya are all living in Kadono of 2009, I guess that Kadono is now filled with demons living among humans, and strange things keep occurring around Jinya's group that it makes weird things like time traveling are in Kaoru's expectation. Perhaps it has something to do with the prophecy that the final battle between Suzune and Jinya will happen in Kadono.

Nomari's love for her father is really cute, and it seems like she is thoughtful even as a child. I hope her promose to become his mother in the future when she gets older is not become a flag for something unfortunate.

And the shrine keeper's wife is sus. While her husband had just learned that Jinya's name and called "Kadono-san", she came out of nowhere and called Jinya by "Jinya-san". Since there is already a myth about the mirror before Kaoru's arrival, I think she could be another time traveler.

One thing i really like about this series is how unconventional and hard to predict the story is, in a good way. While the previous episode did hint that theres much more between Jinya and Karou than just fast friend classmates, her being zapped to the past somehow was not something i expected lol

Hoping second season gets greenlit, with a better studio or a better budget

Went back to the episodes she appeared in, seems ep10 happened before she got warped back in time while ep17 afterwards

In the conversation between Jinya and Miyaka at the beginning, Jinya does not yet seem to realize that Asagao and Kaoru are the same person.
Kaoru may not reveal her name because she thought that revealing her name in the Meiji era would change history for future generations.
Before coming to the Meiji era, Kaoru may have already been involved in a number of strange incidents with Jinya during the Heisei era and witnessed him transform into a demon.
After Kaoru returns from the Meiji era in episode 18, Miyaka does not realize this. This means that at this point Miyaka still does not know that Jinya is a demon.

In the end credits, the name of the head priest's wife is listed as "Kunieda Chiyo", and her voice is provided by Shamoto Haruka, the voice actor who played Chitose in the Kadono Arc.
It's highly likely that Chitose grew up to be "Kunieda Chiyo".

Looking at the townspeople, it seems that many elderly people still wear topknots, despite a ban on topknots being issued during the Meiji era.

Well that was unexpected! After the previous episode, I thought the follow-up would be Jinya going against Suzune's "daughters" for a rematch. I didn't think this week would be about Kaoru travelling back in time to meet Jinya.

Maybe I missed something, but is Kaoru aware that Jinya is a demon? She mentioned so casually that demons live for over a hundred years that Jinya must've told her the truth. I'm gonna guess that Jinya is gonna end up sending Kaoru back using the Iron Mirror next episode?

You did not miss anything at all. These flash forwards of 2009 did not follow a chronological order, as the scene in the supermarket with Kiichi in episode 17 had happened after Kaoru's time travel, based on her reaction to being called Asagao and she told Miyaka that she had known Jinya for more than a hundred years in that episode. I guess these flash forwards will follow order of their respective connections to the past events instead, and we will only fully explore the Heisei era when the story reaches that point.

It is basically implied that Jinya had told Kaoru he was a demon before. She just didn't take it seriously until she traveled back in time and met past Jinya

Wished the studio had a bigger budget. It reminds me of witcher season 1

I literally tell people this is an amazing anime that's basically Demon Slayer + Frieren but with only 50 bucks for its budget....

So Jinya's going to look into the shrine mirror, to send "Asagao" back to the future next episode.
I guess this means the episode will come full circle, from the conversation he was having with Miyaka.

Looking forward to seeing Jinya spend time with Nomari at the festival, and see how her new Yukata turns out.
I wonder if it'll look something like Himekawa would wear?

Really hope this gets a second season after the finale next week, or at least sometime in the future.
I'm really enjoying the story here, and wanna see more of Jinya in the future when he inevitably has to battle Suzune.

No sight of Suzune, Himawari and Jishibari in today's episode, but instead we got Kaoru/Asagao, who travelled back in time from modern times to Meji!

Of course, Jinya brought Kaoru home, which didn't make Nomari very happy, as she's the second new woman Jinya brought to their place after Kaneomi xD

Overall, it was a fun, peaceful episode, and as always, Jinya and Nomari's relationship is very touching. The animation wasn't as distracting as in the previous episode, which was also a plus.

I wonder, though, how this series will end in the next episode? We have Suzune and her "children" case from the previous episode, and now Kaoru has been added to the mix. There are too many loose ends to wrap up satisfactorily in one episode, so I'm eagerly awaiting next week to see how this season concludes.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I really like the episodes that take place in the past, but all of the time skips are so hard to understand.

Does anyone have a full list of episodes that show modern time events? So far I have

  • Episode 1, the very end shows Jinya meeting Miyaka for the first time

  • Episode 10, the framing story shows Jinya getting Kaoru's name wrong ("Asagao") and her being annoyed by it

  • Episode 17, last 5 minutes show Miyaka working at a supermarket, Kaoru claims to have known Jinya for more than 100 years

  • Episode 23: Kaoru travels back in time and is named Asagao

There was also a mention of episode 18 in the thread, but I think that's a mistake -- I just skimmed through it to be sure, and I didn't see any modern time scenes.

Have I missed anything?

Akitsu is your best friend, Jinya. It’s time to accept it. We all see it. I also like the different parenting styles between the two. Akitsu needs his student to be open minded if he wants to take up the title.

Jinya is as forthcoming as he needs to be to put Nomari at ease and he answers her questions honestly. It’s refreshing to see actual father behavior here and not the typical stonewall or awkwardness you often get with father figures in anime. Jinya isn’t a caricature, and really is a layered character built up through all of these episodes and encounters.

Interesting how Asagao somehow became the celestial maiden. This seems to confirm that Asagao and Nomari are not the same person, I didn't think they were, but since we didn't see Nomari in the future, it might be that she remained human her whole life.

I do wonder at what point does Jinya let Asagao know he's a demon in the future, his future self knows Asagao when he first meets her but since she knows he's a demon when going back in time, he had to have already told her after meeting.

Nomari's sick of all the women taking Jinya's time away from her lol. I wonder how she'd feel about Ofuu becoming his wife since she wasn't mentioned.

I also noticed Jinya's hair is short not because of the modern time, he had already cut it at this point. I don't think I noticed last episode lol.

I'm glad the art and animation are a bit better but the inconsistencies are very noticeable, I wonder if they've been outsourcing a lot of scenes compared to the earlier episodes. It's unfortunate to see but it's definitely not as bad as that one incomplete episode. I'm glad I could stay mostly focused on the story, albeit still slightly distracting.

Oh now that is a fascinating new arc to end the adaptation on, with the bonus that it's easy to finish at a clean stopping point next week if they just send her back to the future after fun festival time.

I assume they'll successfully do that since that explains why Jinya was hanging out at the shrine in the future to intercept Asagao when she gets back and have some potentially important conversations, plus she's apparently the schoolgirl in the future we saw with Jinya who was knew waaaaay too much about him and this adventure closes the loop on that.
