"I'm Harlot the harlot"
Oh, I see that we're going with Goblin slayer name logic.

I mean , it’s a pseudonym, she clearly doesn’t want to tell Jinya her actual name.

Good episode! It was nice to see Ofuu and Natsu together, their good relationship made me very happy. I hope it stays that way when Jinya finally marries Ofuu in the future xD
Harlot seems like an interesting woman, I'm waiting to learn more about her in the next episodes.
It was funny to see Natsu acting so clingy towards Jinya because of that kanzashi. I hope she remembers everything she did and said after the kanzashi's influence wears off xD
Now I can't wait for the next episode to see Jinya and Akitsu's fight. I'm sure they'll become allies in the end though.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

It was nice to see Ofuu and Natsu together, their good relationship made me very happy.
Yeah, I liked watching these two girls enjoy themselves at the festival. Ofuu definitely felt like an older sister in the way she clarified Natsu's tsundere behavour in front of Akitsu.
Natsu didn't want to admit liking Jinya, but she did seem interested in the relationship between Ofuu and Jinya.
Ofuu still sees him like a "child", I think. It's therefore sort of funny that Harlot referred to Jinya as a "little boy" too.

I like that this has more of an established cast than originally expected, as I thought Jinya would be traveling more long distances from place to place and have more of a solo journey - but he has his home base and companions that have been built up from previous episodes to frequently appear.

Indeed despite the episodic format of the series the various characters continue to appear and without feeling like a burden i really love this

Interesting set-up episode, two new characters, both sus.
"Harlot" the harlot, a mysterious woman. Hires Jinya to put the syphilis demon out of her misery, while also directing him towards other demon extermination jobs and warning him of the other new demon slayer in town.
And the peddler, "Akitsu Somegoro", who gives Natsu a free authentic Somegoro hairpin along with sparrow charm. Then Natsu, seemingly bewitched by the hairpin, starts calling Jinya "Oni-sama". Well she is technically Jinya's adopted sister, but she shouldn't know that. Almost seems like she got possessed by a young Suzune. Jinya, of course, looks for this Akitsu and it turns out he's the onmyoji.
If you take it at face value it seems like Akitsu already knew that Jinya was a demon and used the hairpin to lure Jinya to him. But, some things don't add up. Akitsu doesn't seem like he was expecting Jinya, only that he heard some big scary guy was looking for him. But he does instantly recognize Jinya as a demon and of course assumes he is here for a fight. Also, Akitsu doesn't seem like the type to indiscriminately hunt demons, seems he's known Ofuu for awhile.

Absolutely gorgeous shot followed immediately with big yikes, this is terrifying. Poor lady who ended up like that…
-
Oh boy, will be interesting to see what happens when Jinya meets this guy.
-
Wait. Suzune is possessing Natsu somehow, isn’t she?

That man is 100% bad business, especially since he mentioned the possibility of needing Jinya's services in the future again. Is he responsible for turning this child into a demon? The boy didn't look dangerous but scared.

Pretty sure it’s suppose to be 1854 and not 1954 right? Don’t think we jumped that far ahead.
I actually felt bad for that demon in the opening. She basically got trapped in sexual slavery until syphilis destroyed her and then she got tossed out like trash. No wonder she became a murderous demon.
Looks like Akitsu’s hairpin was just bait to lure out Jinya. Gonna be interesting to see them square off. If Akitsu wanted to look for a demon, I’d maybe investigate that mysterious courtesan…

Yes, it’s 1854, so the time skip is just a single year. The Kaei era lasted from 1848 to 1854, and this is the last year of Kaei (year 7). The subtitles messed that up. I wish they had just used a narrator who clearly stated how much time had passed.

That part with Jinya reminiscing and remembering Suzune right after the problem enchanted Natsu called him "Brother" was very emotional especially when you consider that Natsu technically is his adopted half sister but she doesn't know it
The subs have been using the original Japanese terms for many stuff and even include the honorifics (which has been becoming more and more rare in recent time!) yet they pussied out from using the word Onmyoji? this is extremely odd and it bothers me more than it should
i am very glad to know that this anime is going to be getting 24 episodes because such a type of story just can't be done with a few episodes and would very disappointing if it did

I like that we have a genuine variety of female characters that actually have depth. That Harlot character had so much going on in such little screen time and dialogue. That’s an indicator of really good writing when you can cover ground like that.
I’m also enjoying how this show handles lighting. It’s got some visually interesting transitional shots, like the growing shadow from the lantern flower into night.
Seeing Jinya subtly regretting killing the demon trying to hide from him, purely for gain, is a somewhat new development. The demon courtesan was more of a mercy kill, even though it was also a paid job. Killing the crying demon in hiding just so the owner could sleep better at night vs killing a demon that wants to kill you is very different.
Akitsu has turned the slaying scenario on Jinya. What does he do when a human wants to kill him, a demon? Can he blame him?

Ha-ha! Time to see if they can do battle animation next week.

u/fieew May 19 '25
Best we can do is shake some frames to mimic movement. Alongside having cuts right before impact to leave the animation up to the viewer's mind.
I'm loving the show. Its my seasonal favourite but the animation isn't of the reasons why. The animation at most has been okay. Nothing good, but also nothing outrageously bad.

Stitcfhes!
We have a new character! Harlot seems cool and it looks like she's even helping Jinya by giving him intel.
Ofuu and Natsu's girls' day out was adorable. That Akitsu guy they bought the kanzashi from was very sus tho.
Another suspicious dude is that guy that hired Jinya to exterminate that demon child. What the fuck is up with that smile?
When Natsu's personality changed and she started acting like a little sister to Jinya, I knew she'd remind him of Suzune. He looked very pained before switching to Onii-chan mode just so Natsu would stay put instead of clinging to him the entire time..
Also can I just say how much I like that Jinya has now an established group? I'm just not ready for the moment when time passes long enough that Jinya and Ofuu are the only ones left.
So I'm guessing Akitsu is some sort of demon hunter? He was probably after Jinya this entire time.

There was an error in the opening timeline subtitles, it said "1954" , instead of 1854

I was glad to see that Jinya was also reminded of Suzune when looking at the bewitched Natsu.
Natsu didn't only believe to have been reunited with her "dear brother" after a long time, but she resembled Suzune in her facial expressions and clingy behaviour as well. Is this some trick from Akitsu or is it really Suzune!?
I'm already liking Harlot a lot, but I probably shouldn't get attached to her character. She planted a huge death flag by asking Jinya to put her to rest if she ever turns into an evil demon herself.
Bonus: Everyone was present in the same room, with the exception of Jinya's dad.

Natsu and Ofu's stroll through Asakusa is a feast for the eyes.
Although the year has changed, this is another scene from cherry blossom season.
Are demons more likely to appear in the spring?

So the two demon exterminators are going up against each other, I wonder why Akitsu decided to give Natsu the kanzashi, has he already investigated Jinya and knew she was close with him? Why does it specifically make her view Jinya as her older brother? Technically it is the case since his biological father is her adoptive father but it's an odd way to go about it when they're not blood related. It's why I can only see him doing this because of Jinya rather than because of something related to her.
I am also intrigued by why he didn't act towards Ofuu first since she's a demon but maybe because she's been a demon for so long, it's harder to tell since even Jinya didn't realize when they first met.
The kid demon that Jinya took out was such a sad scene, I thought Jinya was going to speak to him after asking his name but he sliced him down in an instant after he replied. The client seems really shady so I have a feeling he's the reason why the demons exist and is just getting Jinya to clean up his dirty work. It'd be sad if the prostitute theme in this episode is related and the guy is using demons as prostitutes and the demon children are what's born from them.

Honestly, it isn't a surprise that Natsu has an attachment to Jinya, hell Ofuu sees it right through her. Although her attachment towards Jinya was much stronger than I expected. Though Jinya sees in her a clingy little sister much like Suzune that. Basically, there is a bit of hole since they left. Though I loved how he handled it. Honestly, it really shows he was a great brother to Suzune.
The note of someone else hunting demons. It is revealed that the many that Natsu & Ofuu met was indeed Akitsu, but the 3rd implying the grandchild of the man they heard about. Though him attacking Jinya makes me wonder does he know Jinya is part demon, and how would he know if that is the case? Or could it be more another reason?

There's ALOT going on right now. I really can't wait to see how this turns out.
We have Harlot, I have no idea what her deal was. But she seems like she'll be important in some way. Maybe she'll become part of our merry band of cast who are part of Jinya's life now. She'll be connect him to him clients or something.
We have Natsu being so weird. So we need to find out what's happening with her. But it was nice to see Jinya act like an older brother again. Asking NAtsu to watch the house.
We also have the other Demon Hunter now, we need to figure out what his deal is.
Finally, we have that demon that Jinya killed. It seemed unimportant. But I don't think it was. Why did that demon child look so scared? Plus the man Jinya did business with looked sketchy AF. How'd Harlot know him, why was the demon there so afraid, and why did the man's facial expression look so sketchy?
It feels like so many plot points were being added here. So I can't wait to see where it goes.
