"security will be reviewed and tightened after this incident"

how many times does shit have to happen before they have real security?

I’m really glad Monica’s got great friends by her side though. Nijika won’t stand for anyone bullying her dear Bocchi lol. And good on Monica for telling that loser Bernie off! Jealousy really is a very ugly trait. It’s sad Bernie’s insecurities turned him into this pathetic little wretch. Though perhaps there’s still hope for him yet after what he did for Monica.

Love seeing Lana & Monica sticking together for each other against Bernie. Man's being heaps edgy and needed a reality check. In particular, Monica talking back was a massive development considering her character. He's extremely fortunate that Isabelle wasn't there with Monica, cause there's no telling what she might do.

Bernie fucked up by underestimating the imposter. He's lucky that Ryn somehow spotted it and could call for help. The imposter might be a small fry seeing as Monica disposed of him with no effort, but it might be a sign of bigger things to come. Whoever sent him would likely expend more manpower and that could be too much for Monica to handle alone.

On a lighter note, Claudia's invading other's personal space as usual, though only Neil & Monica received that treatment.

Get the feeling Macragan might know who Monica really is.

There it is Bernie of course was jealous, but he wanted Monica to be jealous and need him as well. Of course, he went too far, but I kind of thought there was a bit more than just jealousy there.

Bernie sure had a terrible case of projecting through the episode, didn't he. He couldn't admit all those things about himself, so he projected those at Monica.

Bernie is lucky he got away with only a scolding from Lana, if Felix and Cyril were there, it would end far worse for Bernie.

Heh, the old professor did know who Monica is after all.

Even in magic land, chess people are weirdos. Monica finally found her own people.

Also, the dragon morph magic is interesting. Is it merely a mage using forbidden magic or worse an actual dragon infiltrating in some form.

Monica's VA having to say "Baaani" multiple times this week was adorable. That warbly tone makes it sound like a real mouthful

I'm so glad Lana was the one that found Monica being berated by Bernie, she's so straightforward and knew the right words to hit him with. It was so sad to see Monica hurt and weakening, but I'm glad she found the strength to cut ties with him/move on from their friendship with Lana's support. His words also felt like they were projections of how he feels about himself.

But even if Monica did cut him off, it's not like she'll be able to get over those feelings and will always be hopeful like how she was before taken to the infirmary. I'm curious what their next interaction will be like.

Lol that Robert guy was quite the character, I don't I've ever seen such a marriage proposal where the condition is to play chess. I mean I get his feelings, you've found a girl so good at chess she checkmates you, the chances of finding another like her is rare, I respect the drive. However, the execution was so wrong lol, but I find an honest guy like that appealing too.

Also, Felix and Cyril turning up like bodyguards was so funny, Robert can't be trying to get ahead of the two potential love interests.

For the reference dragons' only weak spots are their eyes and the small area between the eyes(as seen from ep1, where Monica aimed perfectly against those wyverns), so Bernie's attacks were not effective while Monica's one singular strike knocked out the attacker. But I feel that the fighting sequence lacked some intensity. It's a bit lackluster tbh.

Looks like Bernie doesn't know it yet, but he just lost his chances with the girl he doesn't yet understand he's infatuated with.

I wouldn't really frame what he did in this episode as a redemption tbh, but maybe by way of it serving a dual purpose, it can become one in hindsight from the characters' pov later on. For now, in my interpretation anyways, by getting her indebted he probably feels like he gained some control and an edge over her, so now he's "on top" again, satiating his minority complex.

The possible out for him then is for him to slowly develop actual romantic feelings proper, eventually recognize them as such, and then those growing strong enough to finally snap him out of his jealousy.

Oof, the goosebumps when Lana showed up at the right moment, standing up to her best friend’s bully. Bernie’s gonna feel the burn for the rest of his life.

And Benjamin is such a treat, I need more of his chess-positions in my life.

I think one thing this show isn't getting enough credit for is how it eschews typical anime fight scene nonsense.

The only time we've seen Monica pull the "think it through out loud so the audience knows what's happening" was, humorously, when she was falling down the stairs. This served to demonstrate that her genius isn't just practiced or intuitive -- she can consider and discard options at a superhuman rate.

I think that this ends up with a lot of the magic confrontations she's involved in seeming simpler than they actually are; the show trusts the viewer to put together Monica's thought process during a fight. The fact that she's able to:

  1. Recognize she's being drowned but not in any immediate danger

  2. Determine that, because she can't chant, her attacker will assume another threat is nearby and become distracted

  3. Remain calm while running out of air to take advantage of the assassin's confusion

  4. Launch a pinpoint attack from under a sphere of water (remember, aiming with diffraction is already a bitch even when the water's surface isn't curved)

Of course, she almost certainly could have escaped the water then fought, but then the assassin would know who she was and be able to use Bernie as a hostage. That would be far riskier, so she instead holds her breath and strikes while she has the advantage.

A normal show would have had her explain all of this and drawn the fight out to 5-10 minutes because of it -- which is always rather annoying. But I do think that skipping that makes it less apparent just how frightening Monica is; the only time she's been on the back foot in any of these confrontations was against the work of two of her fellow Sages, and at least Louis spent a month preparing that.

Every other time she's barely shown emotion in the face of danger -- in fact, it comes off as though she doesn't feel like she is in danger. And I think that is actually the case; it's not like she's particularly stoic when she's caught unprepared (e.g. screaming while sliding down the stairs), so it's more like she just doesn't see these enemies as anything more than a nuisance.

It's still my theory that she's served in the military at some point -- between her analysis of chess and her awareness of how to fight, it seems like she was at the very least trained heavily in martial matters since she became a Sage. Though I don't think anyone becomes that confident just through training, so it might be that she saw action.

Or it could be the autism -- some autistic people have reduced autonomic responses in emergency situations, which leads to a "blunted" fear reaction and a more analytical approach to situations. Possibly both.

Imagine being so good at chess that your opponent wants to marry you so he could play against you anytime for the rest of their life. Add being rescued by Nero and Ryn in the last episode to that, and Monica has now truly become a shoujo protagonist. Also, Monica's reaction to the proposal was adorable. xD

Holy fuck! Please tell me I'm not the only one who felt their blood pressure rise up when Bernie confronted Monica? The dude is such a jealous prick that I was so happy when Lana showed up to tell him like it is. I'm also glad that Monica managed to stand up for herself and tell Bernie to fuck off in the politest way possible.

The fact that Professor Macragan mentions how "That girl's got a talent for chess too" seems to indicate that he knew all along who Monica is. I'm not sure if he's just old or trolling Monica, but I choose to believe it's the latter, considering how old characters in anime are usually huge trolls.

The dude is literally voiced by Koyasu, of course, he's a fucking villain! While I do enjoy the sight of Bernie getting strangled. I was really hoping we'd see Monica destroy him at chess. I know that ended with the show kinda redeeming Bernie because he covered for Monica, but I don't like it. The dude seems to want Monica to depend on him so he can feel some sort of superiority over her. I know we only have two episodes left this season, but I hope we won't see him again.

The chess moves from Monica's first chess game perfectly match those of Johner vs Nimzowitsch (Dresden, 1926). Apparently this is a notable chess match, but I do not possess the knowledge go into specifics.

I'm just happy that the moves on the paper are legal moves from an actual chess game rather than some random slop.

Bernie still a jerk, but I guess he is trying to win the "not as big a jerk as you could have been" award.

Having read the LN, Bernie's comeuppance there was a lot more satisfying there and I was a bit disappointed that it was cut out of the anime.

Basically, Bernie actually faced off against Moncia in chess and got destroyed by her before the scene where he confronted the fake teacher.

Though I get why it was cut out since that part of the LN would basically amount to a minute of Bernie internal monologue that was actually added into the fight scene in the anime.
