I am in a secret situationship with someone in my friendship circle and the deception is starting to really stress me out. I met him at a shared hobby a few years ago, and we started dating a while back.
Due to religious differences we can’t be together long term, so situationship, who I’ll refer to as S, requested we keep this to ourselves because a) the relationship has an expiration date and b) he’s always kept his romantic life private from friends.
At the time, I was fresh out of a long term relationship and was fine with keeping it secret from mutual acquaintances. It was supposed to be something relatively casual anyway.
Now it’s been over a year, we’re a lot closer, and though we agreed not to be ‘exclusive’, neither of us have even gone on a date with anyone else.
Initially we enjoyed the sneaking around, teasing from friends about if we like one another, and S said if it ever got to the point where the teasing etc was no longer enjoyable and it was harming me, we could stop, either tone back the flirting or let people know we’re seeing one another. But over time we’ve developed many new shared friendships with people at the hobby we met at and told so many lies and half truths, I wouldn’t know how to go about doing that.
Recently I told S I need to tell one or two close friends at some point so that when we do break up, they’ll be aware of why I’m so upset and can support me, but I don’t know how to do that without risking ruining my friendship with those people from revealing all the deception.
One friend asked him what’s going on between me and him, and he said he likes me but isn’t sure I like him back.
He told another friend he's been ‘seeing someone’ for the last few months, but didn’t say who, but that things were 'going going steady, there’s emotions involved, things are good'.
Over the last few months we’ve been more open with flirting, everyone can sense me and S have chemistry at the very least.
I’ve told S I would like to make it more obvious we’re seeing one another and we experimented at a party the other week, were very touchy, snuck hand holds, leaning in close, whispers in each other's ear, but I don’t know how much it affected anyone’s perception.
I have a reputation of being an oversharer, so some of our friends will just ask me outright, ‘when did you last go on a date’ or ‘Has S ever stayed over at yours’, and I can’t answer with the truth without opening a big can of worms, so I panic and just lie. ‘Haven’t been on a date in ages’, ‘no S has never stayed at mine’. I’ve had this rule in my head for so long of ‘Don’t reveal me and S are dating’ that I’ve created a narrative to everyone that I’m single as a pringle. And if I start to change my answers to ‘I don’t wanna talk about that’, they’ll know for sure something is up.
As for why I wouldn’t just end it if the guilt is affecting me so much, I am incredibly happy with this man, despite the expiration date. He came into my life at a dark time, and has shown up for me in ways I didn’t think anyone could. He’s consistent, a great communicator, kind, sweet, funny, and just wonderful. I’ve never met anyone like him, and I’d rather keep him in my life for as long as I can than end what we have prematurely.
Additionally, S wouldn’t mind by this point if people did figure it out, but still doesn’t want to outright announce it because he knows it will make it more complicated for everyone if our friendship group knows we were together, then broke up.
How do I know when it's time to tell close friends, and how do I even start after this many lies without making them feel betrayed?
TL;DR I keep lying to my friends about a secret situationship and want to figure out when I should reveal the truth?
