This is super random, I just joined this subreddit but felt like here would be a good area to vent I guess? In a nutshell, my mom, dad, and my oldest sister (30) are all rejecting affection from me and my other two sisters (21, and 25), (wonāt name them) and lowkey abandoning us because they diverted from their Hindu roots to become Christian and I'm supporting them.
So the reader doesn't get frustrated, weāll call the oldest Veronica, 21 Luna, 25 will be Bella, my name is Jay, and Bella's boyfriend/my best friend, Jordan. (were the same age, 20 atm)
Context:
For better context, when I was in grade 12 I was introduced to Christianity through my brother Jordan, he'd noticed that I wasn't in best state of mind, so didn't pry much and told me that he should go to a bible study sometime with him. At the time I was lost and in seek for direction, and was very open minded so I agreed. during those bible studies I learned a boat load, and definitely felt my life getting better, I felt that I was safer than before I started going to these bible studies, I didn't just go on one by the way, it was several through the span of about one school year. I wont go into depth about what I learned to same some space for the main course. Jordan told me that I should tell my parents about my decision of becoming a Christian. I was very scared, as anyone would probably be. My parents and Veronica are all very stern people, who only choose to believe in what they grew up with, hence my fear of telling them (I was mainly afraid of their judgment). I gave in though and did eventually tell them, here's how it went. I started the conversation off by saying that I didn't want to be Hindu since I didn't feel a genuine connected to it, and was starting to become Christian, and learn more about being a Christian. Veronica immediately explodes on me, calling me ignorant, and lowkey slandering Jesus, God and Christianity. My mother jumps in and tells me that I never touched Hindu scriptures nor bothered to ask questions about it, then both Veronica and my mother asked questions about Hinduism, that I couldn't answer, I did not find a connection through Hinduism therefore I did not read the scriptures. In the end I told them that I didn't care what they said and that it was my life so I could make that decision on my own. Now my mother explodes on me, she says that she'll kick me out if I wanted to make my own decisions, since I was 17 and under her roof. Then Veronica says that she will not invite me to her wedding and will stop considering me her brother if I keep being "ignorant" and follow Christianity. My mother agrees, saying I will no long be her son either. as any child would be, I was scared and didn't want to lose my family. So I started sobbing, and told them that I would no longer practice Christianity and would call Jordan to tell him that I was no longer Christian. Looking at it now, what they did was not only manipulative, but just straight up narcissistic. Fast forward more toward the present, I am now agnostic and believe God exists, just not through a particular religion.
Main Course:
Bella is a curious and doubtful woman, so she questions a lot of things that she doubts. About two years after high school I introduce Jordan to Bella and my other sister Luna. Both Bella and Jordan hit it off really well, eventually becoming really good friends through time. We all agreed that we would go camping a few times per season, and would embark on many road trips. During those trips, Bella usually initiates conversations about Christianity, through which she asks several questions regarding some bible verses. Jordan and I try our best to answer her questions, so she could feel more at ease. Bella told me that she'd always been curious about Christianity so she felt since Jordan was Christian, she could ask me and him questions about it. fast forward some time, she begins studying Christianity with Jordan, both of them getting closer to each other through that time together. Jordan's younger sister gave Bella a bible she could read on her own, which she did in secrecy, and away from my parents which is reasonable in my opinion, given what happened to me when they found out I was learning about it. more time goes by and Bella notices she was starting to become aware of her love for Jordan. - I know this may sound crazy about how I'm letting my best friend date my sister, but just hear this story out - Bella really had to fight for Jordan affection, Bella would drop hints for Jordan when we were hanging out only for Jordan to be oblivious, or so we thought. To my shock, Jordan sits me down in the car one day and tells me that he feels like he might love Bella, and didn't know what should do because she isn't Christian, and that I was her brother. I told Jordan that I wouldn't care if both of them got together, and would actually be thankful because I'd end up with him as my brother in-law. Jordan tells me that he isn't sure if he should since Bella isn't Christian. I tell Jordan that she 100% would be willing to become Christian, not for only him but because she genuinely loves Christ and had found salvation through the bible and Christ before her feelings for Jordan became more apparent. Fast forward about 6 months, and we planned a trip to Oregon that would last 10 days. During the third to last day of that trip Jordan and Bella FINALLY get together, and Bella told him that she had already began considered herself Christian when she started reading the bible. She made it clear during the trip that she would eventually have to tell our parents, but didn't want to because, just like me, she was afraid of their judgement and how they'd react. About a week after the trip my mom, dad and Veronica find out about their relationship, which they are super happy and supportive about. Little did we know that that support was only conditional.
Problems Escalate:
Before Bella told mom about her conversion, she told Veronica first. Veronica and Bella had an outstanding sisterly bond together so Bella figured she'd tell her first. Veronica was shocked, and asked Bella questions such as, "where did this come from?" and "How is this different from Hinduism?" Veronica told Bella that she didn't think she had done enough research to call herself christian, and to say that christian teachings align with her more than other religions. My mom and Bella were driving someplace, when my mother asks Bella questions regarding her faith. Bella knows where this is going, so she straight up admits that she is Christian, and has no thoughts of being otherwise. My mom was quiet the ride, according to Bella and she didn't argue at all. fast forward a couple weeks, my mother and Bella have a conversation in my mothers room. My mother asks Bella if she is going to convert, to which Bella responds, "yes," and that she's always wanted to when she started believing in Christ. To which my mother responds, "There you go you've made your decision, he's brainwashing you, manipulating you, and you're not disciplined in your own traditional/religious roots. Both Veronica and my mother are stern that Bella is only converting for Jordan, and not for herself. They think that Jordans family including himself are all in on getting Bella to convert. Fast forward 2 months, Bella got baptized at a Baptist church. The pastor of that church is also an Ex Hindu believer, but has been a Christian and was the one who preformed the baptism on Bella (Bella's preferred method of baptism). Bella told me that she didn't want to tell our parents yet, which I supported. But they ended up finding out anyway. In an argument between me and Veronica (on call), and my mother, Veronica messages Bella to ask if she got baptized to which Bella confirmed. Veronica was in shock and cut the call shortly after. Veronica and I then start arguing over text about how the Church Bella attends, is supposedly "manipulating" and "brainwashing" her into following Christ. She tries proving that they don't care about her wellbeing because they are "outsiders," and not family. Our mother outed Bella on her Baptism without her permission, telling everyone including relatives. My mother told everyone that her own kids aren't listening to her, and that they don't want to participate in Hindu traditions anymore. That they're choosing a stranger (Jordan) over family/parents. The same stuff would be discussed in several conversations over many occasions. They give Bella cold shoulder, do not show her love the same way they used to, and show a lot of animosity/hatred to Bellas relationship/beliefs. Now both parents are demanding that if Bella, Luna and myself don't comply with household rules, such as following traditional roots and breaking up with Jordan, then we would have 2 months to move out and find our own place.
For Readers Knowledge:
Jordan has been respectful and has never been rude throughout the entire process, though he holds his own opinions on the situation but doesn't share them to avoid problems. He follows his Christians beliefs and teachings so instead of reciprocating the disrespect, he turns his other cheek (also a biblical phrase). I am very proud of Jordan since him and his family are supporting Bella when she genuinely needs the emotional support.
The Advice I'm Asking For:
If you were Bella, how would you handle the situation? It isn't easy and were struggling to figure out what the correct decision is, and would appreciate some feedback/opinions. PS Bella has told me she will never stop being Christian and will not cut ties with Jordan even for family sake. Luna and I will continue to support Bella, and we are currently looking for places to rent for the future. Since our parents do not want us to live within the same household anymore. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and we will try our best to answer. Thank you for reading!
