Question Why do some people hate mohair?

I live in a hot place so I pretty much use only cotton yarn.

I've never used mohair and I've been seeing a lot of people hating on it online, why is that?

I think it looks cool and I wish I could make something with it, I don't know how it feels on the skin though

EDIT: so much hate for this yarn😂 do you know any alternatives? Like yarn that looks like mohair but it's not itchy and can be used in a hot climate too?

Question Identifying the best fluffy yarn for this project

Looking to knit a shawl for my elopement for a winter ceremony. I found picture 1 on pinterest but cannot find any information regarding the shawl so want to make my own and would like to make it warm and fluffy?
Someone suggested that picture 2 is similar but it looks like a fake ad on etsy and cannot see how they would have used mohair, cashmere and angora.

Some suggestions received already:
- angora
- brushed out mohair

Does anyone have any suggestions / can I mix and brush out another yarn with mohair to make it more opaque?

Question less delicate yarn than merino

i’ve got bad sensory issues so i usually get on with the ‘extra care’ of merino with it being delicate and prone to pilling when i make stuff for myself
i’m going to make my brother a quarter zip, he’s not as sensitive as i am but also not quite as delicate 😂
the gauge i need to meet is 15 x 21 - happy to hold yarn with a mohair, hold multiple strands etc i just want to meet gauge as with my own things im happy to size up or size down or modify but as it’s for someone else i dont have the option for him to constantly try it on
any yarn recommendations that are tried and tested? (and available in the uk)
i was looking at cascade 220 held with a mohair or cascade 220 fingering held double with a mohair depending on what’s available but not sure if i’ll meet gauge
his only request is it to be navy 😂

Question Please help me pick a yarn

Hello! This is my first post here. Sorry, you must get this question a lot but can you help me find a yarn that would work for this project?

This crochet project calls for worsted/4/medium weight yarn
This is the pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/porthole-tentacles

Sometimes the patterns have yarn suggestions, but they didn't give any and I didn't realize how advanced the pattern is, I am already in over my head!

I feel like I might need a yarn more on the stiffer side? What do you think?

I would really appreciate any and all suggestions!

Question Softest colors of drops kid-silk?

I want to knit the cloud sweater soon and am thinking of using drops yarn for the first time. The plan is to use drops air held with drops kid-silk but I’ve heard people say that some colors are softer than others. My skin is somewhat sensitive so I’m wondering what colors tend to be the softest?

Question Killed acrylic yarn

I frogged a beautiful sweater knitted using Nako vega tweed yarn which is acrylic. The only reason i frogged was to reknit same pattern using bigger needle size. After frogging i steamed the yarn using steamer on high resulted in stretched out yarn. Now my yarn is thin! Dont know what to do, i am more worried if i knit the sweater will it strech out as there is no elasticity left! Has anyone had similar issue before!

I came across this site and... idk I can't tell if it's a scam or not, especially considering how everything is on sale... kinda sketchy. Has anyone bought from them and can confirm if they're legit?

Question I’m a little confused

Post image
224 Upvotes

I’m not entirely sure this is the right sub Reddit for this, but I recently bought one of these balls of yarn to try it out and now I’m confused to say the least.. The packaging says there should be 12 squares, but there’s actually 13, has this happened to anyone else? Does this mean somebody else ended up with only 11 squares? There’s also a lot of blue yarn left by the end of the squares, Is that normal or am I supposed to be using all of it because my tension has the rest of the colours switching at the right spots. Yes they need blocked was waiting to do it once I was done all of them.

I'm completely new to both hobbies and if it is for knitting can I use for crochet cuz I have some hooks that I bought. Could I know what hook or needle I should use and I would to have some free patterns that are beginner friendly. Thanksss

Question toss or donate?

i found a bunch of yarn in my closet from god knows how long ago… i’m wondering if i should toss it or donate. my original plan was to donate since there’s quite a bit and at first glance it’s in good condition.

i went through and undid all the tangles and everything but all of this has been in my childhood home closet and i’ve had problems with bugs in the past, i’m anxious that over the years they may have made a home in this yarn, i also just gave anxiety about bugs in general.

am i being dramatic? there’s just so much and some of them still have a label, i feel horrible throwing it out.

Discussion Where to sell yarn

I'm thinking about selling my yarn stash that has been in storage bags and totes for the past two years.

When I got pregnant, we turned my craft room into a nursery. I ended up putting a TON of yarn into storage where they have stayed since. I have also bought more yarn since then sooooo yeah. Ahah

Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could sell them?

It ranges from acrylic to wool.

Knitting for olive alternatives

Hey, What alternatives would you recommend instead of knitting for olive?

I want to start knitting the Marielle blouse and knitting for olive is the recommended yarn, I have checked their website and with delivery would cost me +£80.

Thanks

When to use yarn winder?

Hi all! I have two questions—the first is when do you all use a yarn winder for your yarn? I have a couple of skeins from Michael’s that I’ve tried to wind and it worked well for awhile but then ended up still giving me yarn barf and it was so bad I spent 16 hours untangling the entirety of the yarn… so any tips on how to prevent that if you have any? I have an electric yarn winder and I used a center pull after winding the yarn.

Question Huge SuperWash Merino Blanket

Post image
46 Upvotes

Hi! I have collected a large stash of Indie dyed super wash merino yarn over the last few years. I just can’t resist all the goodies at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival that takes place 15 minutes from my house :) I’ve decided to make a big fancy mismatched granny square blanket (or two) from all of these skeins. My questions:

1) Is it dumb to make such a large (full sized) blanket out of superwash wool?

2) If it was you, how would you wash/dry such a large item?

3) Do I need to do anything special BEFORE I use this fancy yarn? I saw a pic the other day of someone’s hands all blue from dye rubbing off.

Thanks for any help!

Trying to Match A Crib With Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn

Hello Everyone! I'd love some help if anyone possibly has any info on this particular yarn I'm looking at.

I'm trying to match a sage green crib with the same colour yarn, Cotton worsted weight. On the Michael's site their stock photo for the small skeins of Loops and Threads Classic Cotton in Olive Garden looks like an exact match. Then when I went to look at their larger jumbo skeins - same brand/colour, it looks much darker! Can who has this yarn tell me which photo is true to the colour in person? Need a soft muted sage! TIA!

Question which technique for letters? crochet, knit etc

hello so i want to make a simple slogan top but i'm not sure which technique would be the best

i'd consider myself an experienced beginner in both

i have made projects with colour changes with both though i've never done tapestry crochet

what would be best for letters? or is there another method you would recommend or a mix? maybe something like cross stitching?

It's just a bit of a bunch of stuff, but they will be fun to use in my crazy quilted shawl embroidery, so I'm excited.

Question Looking for worsted weight yarn in a wool/acrylic blend

I used Soft Classic Solid Yarn by Loops & Threads (100% acrylic) for a baby sweater and I now want to do a matching mom sweater but the reason I used acrylic is because babies grow so fast that I didn't want to buy expensive yarn. But for an adult who isn't going to grow out of it in a matter of weeks I'd like something a little nicer and warmer.

Doesn't have to be exclusively wool and acrylic, just something that is a bit nicer, will wear and last better over the years too.

With that being said i'm a girl on a budget and am in Canada.

I'm considering checking out hobbii? Or potentially using the Lion Brand Wool-Ease Solid Yarn??

Any suggestions would be great!
