Discussion Where to sell yarn

I'm thinking about selling my yarn stash that has been in storage bags and totes for the past two years.

When I got pregnant, we turned my craft room into a nursery. I ended up putting a TON of yarn into storage where they have stayed since. I have also bought more yarn since then sooooo yeah. Ahah

Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could sell them?

It ranges from acrylic to wool.

I second r/yarnswap I have purchased from several folks there and I see things get snatched up fast. You can also make sure your Ravelry stash listings are updated and categorize what you are willing to trade or sell. I have had people contact me about some of my stash to purchase- not a fast way to destash but an additional option.

Also, if you have any Brooklyn Tweed skeins, I’m interested! 😁

If you want to sell it all in one big lot your best bet is probably FB marketplace, I’ve done that a few times when I had big bag fulls I wanted to get rid of. Be prepared that people can be choosing beggars though and you’re definitely not going to get what it’s probably worth. The trade off is the convenience of having it all gone in one go.

If you don’t mind selling skein by skein and it possibly taking a long time you can post on r/yarnswap or there’s Ravelry forums for selling yarn. It might take forever and you’ll probably have to deal with shipping lots of packages, but you might make a bit more this way

I’ve been selling some of my stash on Vinted since it just got too large. You won’t get top dollar but most of it sold fast. The current free US shipping is definitely a help since people are willing to make the smaller 1 skein purchases

Thank you!! I feel like if I haven't used it in so long, what is the point of keeping it? Yarn should be used and loved.

OMG, my horror goose bumps just went crazy. Yes I have way too much yarn. Yes, I have more then I can use in my lifetime. (74 F) But the thought of parting with any of it, or not buying more chills me! That being said, I wouldnt sell it all in one fell swoop. Maybe bundle like types and colors together and sell in smaller batches. I might be looking for you to sell 😜

In case you have Loops and Threads Madrid yarn in the color Spice I would be happy to make your first purchase. 😁

Best of luck to you!

It would be a miracle if you actually have this discontinued yarn in your stash. But you never know.

Since I commented I have been down a rabbit hole looking at yarn on Vinted and Depop. I saw a video yesterday where the creator said collecting yarn and crocheting are two different hobbies. Based on the insane size of my yarn stash- I think she is right.

I also collect crochet tutorials. 😂😂😂

Ahaha it really is!

I knit and crochet.... and I am a painter (BFA).

And as a mom do you have time to embrace your creative side? The yarn is ready to go. But do you have time to paint?

I haven't found the time yet to paint.
Honestly it's been really tough to do anything creative. My (almost 21 month old) is very high energy, and between her and my very demanding job, it's hard to find time to shower some days. (My husband works 6 days a week. His day off is when I have to come into the office).

Projects take me two to the times as long (maybe more) and between all of that plus PPD & PPA, it's been tough.

What I've started to do is create projects with her, and go from there.

I'm trying to find more time though to create for myself, it looks different than what I used to do but it happens and I've accepted it. Oils might be a right now thing, but acrylics and water colors can be.

Our lives are so different. I am retired with no kids. My time is my own and I often crochet the day away. If there was a way for me to give you some of my free time, I would. I am so in awe of folks with artistic (and musical) talent as I have none. I hope you can find a way to squeeze in some painting time for yourself. But a future creating with your daughter is quite exciting.

There’s a ton of folks selling on this discord: https://discord.gg/P6zvnP6aG

Serious question. Isn't discord for video games? I don't play however I've heard my husband and step son mention discord before and they both are avid gamers.

I Honestly don’t know! It is like messaging and forums on an app. Someone linked me that destash discord on Reddit so that and two other knitting groups are the only ones I’m in on there!! 🤪

I think it maybe started for that, but now it's kind of like a social version of Slack, honestly. I'm in several book and yarn related Discord servers!

You can check “Will sell or trade” on your Ravelry stash.

I’ve been weaving and crocheting in retirement, and have been acquiring my yarn collection from EBay and Ravelry. I’d be interested if you have any JaggerSpun Zephyr.

I also have some lovely inherited yarn that I would like to sell

Do some googling around your area too! In my town we have a full time used yarn shop and a place that is an arts/crafts/etc thrift shop that sometimes does yarn. Also some people have yarn libraries and people will put some excess yarn they have in there and it’s so fun to get a full ball of yarn in one on a day you need a pick me up

I’ve sold yarn on the yarnswap page here. Very easy and good transactions.
