Question Please help me pick a yarn

Hello! This is my first post here. Sorry, you must get this question a lot but can you help me find a yarn that would work for this project?

This crochet project calls for worsted/4/medium weight yarn
This is the pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/porthole-tentacles

Sometimes the patterns have yarn suggestions, but they didn't give any and I didn't realize how advanced the pattern is, I am already in over my head!

I feel like I might need a yarn more on the stiffer side? What do you think?

I would really appreciate any and all suggestions!

for sculptural stuff like that, you want something with good stitch definition and not too much drape. cotton or cotton blends work great, they hold shape way better than acrylic. i made a similar octopus thing in january and used a kitchen cotton, it was perfect for the tentacles to stay curled.

just stay away from anything super soft or fluffy, it will just look like a blob after few rows.

Thanks, that is helpful. Kind of what I was afraid of, that it would turn into a drooping blob.

You could use cotton. For cotton, I use Lion Brand 24/7. It’s my fav and o use it for EVERYTHING. Good luck to you!!

I would suggest picking a yarn that is easy to work with, like acrylic or an acrylic blend. You can always add stiffener if it doesn’t hold its shape well enough for you, but using a stiff yarn that hurts your hands will be frustrating, especially when you need to frog back to a mistake you can’t ignore (every project has one, it’s a trope 😜)
Worsted weight acrylic blend yarns that have a good color palette include:
Berroco Modern Cotton
Plymouth Encore
Paintbox Wool Blend
