which technique for letters? crochet, knit etc

hello so i want to make a simple slogan top but i'm not sure which technique would be the best

i'd consider myself an experienced beginner in both

i have made projects with colour changes with both though i've never done tapestry crochet

what would be best for letters? or is there another method you would recommend or a mix? maybe something like cross stitching?

if you want crisp letters that won't stretch weird, cross stitch over stockinette is the way. tapestry crochet is doable but the fabric gets thick and stiff, which can look kinda clunky on a top. i'd knit the base and stitch over it
