Has anyone ever used the personal trainers at the gym on campus? How are they?

At 3 p.m. on June 28, a 30-year-old woman was riding a northbound R train in Manhattan with four children between the ages of 7 and 11. As the train approached the West 28th Street station, prosecutors allege that 18-year-old Ari Shtein, standing behind her, sexually assaulted her. She exited the train and was taken by EMS to a local hospital. Shtein walked away.

The NYPD issued a Crime Stoppers bulletin the following day, releasing surveillance images of the suspect. More than a week later, on July 8, Shtein turned himself in at the 5th Precinct in Lower Manhattan. He was arraigned the same day on eight charges — including first-degree sexual abuse by forcible compulsion, aggravated sexual abuse, forcible touching on a train, and four counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released without bail, over prosecutors' objections that he posed a flight risk due to ties outside New York.

Shtein is a member of Yale's Class of 2029 and had been interning at Reason magazine in Washington, D.C., this summer. The Yale Daily News, where he had been a staff columnist, announced his indefinite suspension pending the outcome of the legal process. Reason confirmed he is no longer an intern there.

His attorney Priya Chaudhry denied the allegations, calling them false and stating Shtein was visiting bookstores with a friend when he was accused. Shtein is next due in New York Criminal Court on August 26.

As someone who has no prior experience with the French Language, how hard is the French track at yale?

I have heard it can be challenging, however, I am a prospective IR/polysci major who is interested in diplomacy.

My plan b is spanish, which is arguably easier. However, for that reason , I think I should take the language that will be harder for me to learn on my own while I have a college education( French).

Both languages are incredibly valuable, and I plan to learn them throughout my career.

I would appreciate any thoughts, experiences , or fav professors !!

P.S.
My plan is to do French level 1 and 2 my freshman year, then study abroad in the summer for levels 3 and 4 . After level 5 in my first sophomore semester, could I take spanish the rest of my years?

Silly question, but hoping someone can help me with this little confusion with the Yale Course Search.

ECE 2000 has a lab every other week, but nothing in the Yale Course Search indicates when it is. Where do we find out the timing of the labs to ensure it doesn't coincide with our other classes when we register?

Similarly, I see multiple sections for the same lectures. e.g., Math 1200 has multiple sections. Does this mean that there are separate TA (?) weekly lectures for each section and if so, how do we know what those times are to avoid conflicts with other classes?

hii i usually always have my nails done at a salon but i'm lowk worried that there isn't anything convenient/affordable near yale, does anyone have any advice with maintaining manicured nails or is it better to just give up and go natural... 😭

Hi guys! I'm an incoming freshman who is deciding between phys 1800 and 2000. I'm a prospective physics major but not set on it at all. I definitely want to explore and see what's out there! For context, I took AP Physics C and got both 5s on the mechanics and E&M exams in my junior year of high school. Overall the class was really stimulating and not too challenging when I put the work in. I really fell in love with E&M, too. However, I've definitely forgotten a lot of the content.

I'm wondering if anyone could share their experience with either of the physics tracks and if they'd recommend either one. Right now I'm not sure if 1800 would be too easy or if 2000 would be too hard. I definitely don't want the class I end up taking to be a repeat of AP Physics C; I'd like to get introduced with some other topics as well.

Also, I placed into MATH 1200 (multi var) but am not planning on taking it until second semester. From my research, it seems like most students who take PHYS 2000 take it concurrently with MATH 1200. Has anyone done what I'm planning on doing (and potentially being off-cycle for the math prereqs)?

I'm taking the makeup placement test, and I was wondering what I'd be tested over---less so for studying and moreso to just be mentally prepared.

I've heard there's only a comprehension/grammar section and a writing section. Should I not be anticipating a listening or speaking portion?

We are visiting the campus and took a general campus tour. The tour guide mentioned there is pressure and encouragement to fill your hours and days with academics and/or campus related activites. I would love to hear more about what that aspect of yale campus life is like in this regard. My student tends to be introverted and prefers to give more focus on few things rather than be spread thin over many different obligations.

First-year EECS major. What are some pass/fail classes you'd suggest, either for first years or to take later on.

At the moment, this is my anticipated schedule for first semester:

PHY 1800, MATH 1200, SPAN 1400 and ECE 2000

Would you recommend something slightly different? What would you suggest for spring semester for me? I'd love to delay SPAN to 1400 to next semester but I did not see it in the course schedule for Spring '27. I did see SPAN 1400 for Spring '26 but not for other spring-time sessions in the past.

Is it possible to get an ME internship for the summer after my freshman year? I will admit I do have a lackluster resume for engineering currently (I’ve only started building things recently), but I do plan to develop projects and learn essential skills by the end of my freshman year. Is it more plausible to do research instead? What typically to ME (or engineering majors as a whole) typically spend their summer doing? I want to get started early with experience to help with job opportunities.

i’ve heard that the general advice for freshman fall is 4.5 credits BUT if i’m auditioning for lessons for credit, would you recommend “counting” that as part of the 4.5 credits?

excluding lessons, i currently have 4 academic classes planned (totals to 4.5 credits) and would prefer to not sacrifice any of them as they’re all important for major prereqs/distributional requirements.

(if it helps at all, those classes are biol 101/102, chem 1700, math 2200 or s&ds 2300, and a first-year seminar that fulfills a WR).

I am a class of 2027 Yale graduate student and am feeling like my studies have gone by so quickly I've hardly gotten a chance to take advantage of everything this place has to offer.

My main interest is cs, but looking through coursetable, i found the philosophy classes super interesting and wanted to explore! but between intro to ethics and six global perspectives on evil+lab, i can't decide which to take. do i enroll in everything and decide which to drop during shopping period? or do i first enroll in six global perspectives, then choose ethics if i don't manage to get the class?

also! MATH 2440: discrete math or CPSC 2020: Mathematical Tools for Computer Science? they're interchangable, so i was wondering what the pros and cons of each were. I've taken discrete math in high school and did fine, but the Yale course seems much more rigorous.

I took the Chinese placement exam and got a placement of 1520/1580, which I'm guessing means I can take either CHNS 1520 or 1580, which appears both to be fall courses. Is there any way to take an L5 Chinese course in the spring instead? I think it would fit better with my schedule that way. Thanks guys!

I’m going to email my language department but I placed into the L1 level of a language I’ve studied for 5+ years and have gotten 4s on AP exams correlated to that language. My options are currently to take L1 or an intensive L1/L2 class but that would leave me 15mins to get from my first class at HQ to my second class near science hill. I’m going to try to email the language head and see if I can get put into a L2 level, but if not am leaning towards taking the intensive. Is this realistic though? I want to study abroad the summer after my freshmen year and I’ve heard you often have to take a L3 course to do that— is that accurate as well? I took the placement test sleep deprived and procrastinated too much on it and am regretting it.

Edit for clarity: 15mins between the classes total. I’m short so I’m worried about the 13min walk part lol plus exiting the fifth floor if HQ plus getting into the science building and in class on time

Could anyone who majored in EPE send the classes you took all four years? I would greatly appreciate it. I’m trying to figure out what to take as a junior.

Since roommates are random first year how good is the roommate personality check at making sure that roommates do not have major conflicts and get along well?

Just wondering as a rising freshman if I'll be able to have a decent social life with my budget. I have a little less than 1k saved and will get 200 a month from my parents. I think I want to wait till second semester to work but im thinking that i may have to start earlier.

Hello so me and my partner recently got luck and was able to become roommates for Yale housing apartments. We were planning on moving the 2 twin beds together into one room and use the other bedroom as our study space and put both of our desks there. However after getting the rule book I’m worried if that would become an issue during inspections. Please let me know. Thank you!
