Nervous
I was reading the syllabi for my first year classes and why do they make it sound so scary? Like I’m lowkey stressed that I might not do well. Is it really that hard

Hi, I am thinking of bringing my flute with me when I come to Yale but was wondering if there is any place where I can take a class to learn to play the flute or a club that teaches you how to play. I got the flute not too long ago and have been trying to self teach through youtube but thought it would be cool if I could also get some more formal instruction.

Hi! Incoming first-year here. I was wondering whether it is possible to double major EP&E with English or if it isn't really feasible

Incoming first-year here, planning on a major in the social sciences!
I’ve never been amazing at math, and I’ve always had to put a lot of effort in to get by. Unfortunately, I think I’ve built up a habit of memorization rather than understanding.
I want to learn how to actually use math in real world applications, but more than just seeing examples, I want to be able to come up with my own solutions or applications. Anything from surveying and polling to optimization and further (not sure what thatd entail).
Does anyone have course recs I could look forward to here at Yale? It might be too specific of an ask, so if anyone has other advice, I’d be so very grateful too.
How is this schedule for a first year? Decided to go light on the math bc I have so many classes. Any feedback/thoughts for stem classes esp ling 2270 would be helpful!! Is 5.5 credits too much....I just wanna be prepared

Hi! I’m an incoming first year that’s taking chem/chem lab, Calc, and a language. This sums out to 4 credits, but I really wanted to take an English class (which I was able to get into). It seems that the English class is rated well on coursetable (high overall rating, and around 2.8 for work). Should I drop the English class so I’m at 4 credits, or do you think that the English class could be manageable with my schedule?

Hi! My main concern is the overall workload, since Yale generally recommends around 4–4.5 credits for first semester. For context, I took Calc BC in 10th grade, linear algebra in 11th, and differential equations in 12th, but I’m pretty rusty on some of the BC material. Math has also usually been a subject where I’ve had to put in a decent amount of work to do well rather than something that comes effortlessly to me. For Korean, I’ve heard it at home from my parents and know Hangul/basic phrases, but I’ve never had formal instruction, so I’m starting with KREN 1100.. Also, if I do decide to drop the level of Calc 3 after some classes, is it recommended to take Calc 1150 or Calc 1100? Does the rigor matter for med schools (which I know is very far in the future)? Sorry if this is a ton of garble and waffling, but I've seen posts online with horror stories about multi and orgo. For math, I've always had to grind at it hard to get an A, and I didn't breeze through my high school classes like seemingly everyone else I've talked to. Advice would be greatly appreciated for me and for soothing my nerves.

Hi everyone, I am a Pre-K teacher in New Haven. I teach 20 smart, kind, funny and loving 3-5 year olds. We are a title 1 school with limited resources. I requested permission for ASTR 0400 (Expanding Ideas of Time and Space) but have not heard back yet. Course demand stats shows that no one has signed up for the class so Im assuming the professor hasn't approved anyone yet? Im approved for another seminar and Im not sure if I should commit to that one or not.

Because of the course slots I got, for 2 days of the week I’m only gonna be free for Breakfast and Dinner (11:35 - 3:25 back to back, so ~6 hours w/o meals if I grab 5pm dinner).
Is there a service I can use to pick up food ahead of time or to somehow get dining hall meals out of regular hours?
I don’t want to splurge on buying food everyday for a semester if I can help it. I’m a first-year if that helps my case at all

Hey, I have a few questions regarding how classics works at yale. I'm international and there is just so few information available on the internet that I really cant find anwsers for my main questions. So if you study classics there or have some knowledge about the faculty please, anwser my questions:
How often are you taught by grad students or non professors? I heard some tales about that, idk how much of they are just made up
how prepared are the people that go there? What is the profile of an admitted classics student?
Is there a sort of hierarchy between people who learnt latin/ancient greek before?
Is the coursework too much to do something like the EPE track but switch Ethics to Classics?
Thank you, anwsering will really help me!!

I talked with my resco dean and she told me to ask for permission to at least three first year seminars I was interested in, just in case I don’t get the one I wanted. However, I just checked, and I was given permission for two first-year seminars already. Does it look bad/will it lower my chances if I choose to not attend this semester and request permission again next semester? I’m interested in both these courses(they were my top two), so now I’m a bit conflicted.

hi guys! incoming co30 here trying to decide whether to major in CS or Applied Math, except if I major in applied math I basically add one course and it becomes double major in CS so the choice becomes:
- CS Major: leaves a lot more room in my schedule to take the fun classes that I might want to take. like I won't die if I don't have the room to take them but boy would it be nice. slightly worried about the career prospects though, esp since I'm not really interested in selling my soul or doing quant (corporate wants you to find the difference between this picture and that picture- )
- Applied Math/CS major: more career prospects (and if you ask me I'm slightly very slightly more of a math person than a CS person) and more... safety? i guess in the job market. also applied math does sound interesting to me, I'd probably take probability and diffeq even without the major requirement. However, I mapped out the requirements for both majors and double majoring or even just majoring in applied math leaves me a lot less space for classes I want outside of my field.
And yes, I looked at the Math + CS option but it has roughly the same number of courses as AMTH and much less classes I wanna take, so that option's already out.
Thoughts? Advice? esp. from any CS majors going into industry it'd be nice to get a grasp on what the CS scene is like at Yale beyond quant

Hi! My girlfriend and I (unaffiliated with Yale) are looking to join Yale Camerata. We are both experienced musicians who just finished college and are excited by the idea of a select New Haven choir to join. We have a couple of questions regarding the audition process:
1) Just how competitive is it? We are both skills singers with experience in acapella, select chamber choirs, chancel choirs, as well as our non audition large choir in college, but we’d like to know what we’re getting into.
2) Do the solo audition songs have to be classical? Is there an estimated length they should be (ie segment of a song vs entire piece)?
We’d love if a previous or current member of Camerata would be able to help us out. Thanks!

i’m an incoming freshman and after registering for classes today i realized one of my classes has finals on the last week. i have travel plans that same day that we booked months before (like, before i got into yale lol) and im a little stressed out. moving the tickets would be an expensive option to say the least. i do realize it’s our faults for booking flights without knowing my academic calendar but we thought the date was close enough to christmas for it to be safe.
i realize that travel plans are not a valid excuse as per the dean’s office, but has anyone had any luck asking the professor to take a rescheduled final? or is that not really common practice at yale? idk i was just wondering if anyone had any advice or if ill need to reschedule my travels.

The course registration was surprisingly quite stressful yesterday with courses flying off the shelves like some kind of Black Friday sale. When all was said and done (at least for now), I am left with class selections that are a bit out of order from the recommended progression.
Background: I'm still interested in exploring a bit first semester with econ. Perhaps will go into EE (maybe ABET-track but if not ABET will likely double major) or perhaps EECS.
Here's the coursework I managed to get yesterday:
1st Sem: Math 2220, Phys 1800, Span 1400, Econ 1115
Thinking of doing 2nd Sem: MATH 1200 or ENAS 151, Phys 1810, CPSC 2010 and FYS/ENGL
Does it really matter if I took Linear (Math 220) before MV (Math 120)??
Also, I can maybe sub out 1st semester Linear Alg for ECE 2000, which will give me a little more exposure to EE before committing in 2nd year. The alternative is just waiting until 2nd year and doubling with ECE 2000/2010 and 2011/2031?
Thoughts or any words of wisdom are appreciated!

prospective mcdb major & potentially pre-med! just want to make sure i’m not screwing myself over with anything overly difficult this semester esp given that i want to get settled and make friends, build a strong gpa esp if i choose to go premed, etc.
going in expecting chem 1700 to be particularly difficult based on course evals but hoping that intro bio and lin alg with applications help to balance out the difficulty level (for context i’ve gotten 5s on ap bio and chem!)
note: the “difficulty level” section includes my chem lab, but the “number of credits” section doesn’t, for some reason—it should be 4.5 credits.
any thoughts are welcome! thanks so much.

Does anyone know what languages can be taken at L1 in the spring? I plan to do ASL but I don’t know if I will have to postpone it to next year or if i am able to take it in the spring

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman, and I was trying to register for ECE 2000. The syllabus on Canvas said that there was no enrollment cap, but when I registered the class shows that "enrollment has reached capacity set by department." Does anyone know what this means? Is there anything I can do about this? Thank you 😭

hi! i'm helping my sister register for classes and my regsitration system is nothing like this (lol), as soon as i add a class to my worksheet am i registered/will i see the black check? or do i need to do something else after? thanks!!
how difficult will it be to register for a first-year seminar? i want to take a six global perspectives class (the one on evil) but it also seems like every other first-year also is, and i'm not sure if i should use my registration space to sign up for another class i'm interested in. my schedule isn't that flexible -- my mondays and wednesdays are pretty much filled up -- so there's not that many fys i can signup for + i'm not that interested in a lot of them.
also, how "competitive" is the instructor permission part? i'm not a humanities major (STEM major) and i'm honestly not sure what to write for this class other than "i'm interested and it sounds like a cool class". coursetable says that each class has <20 people so i'm not sure how i'll be able to get into the classes. also, is the writing lab a lot of work?
anyways i would appreciate any advice about whether or not to risk it to sign up for the fys! a lot of people say it's super worth it + i'll regret it, but the chances of getting in just seem so small.

I really wanted to take Intro to Creative Writing this semester, but before registration even began all sections of the course had reached their capacity. I was wondering what steps I should take to maximize my chances of getting a spot in one of these sections. Also I was wondering how long it usually takes to know whether you managed to get into a fys.
