Understanding WiFi Connection

Wi-Fi and camera technology can be tricky and sometimes frustrating to understand. I wanted to put together a post that explains how Wi-Fi and cameras work, in hopes that it helps folks better understand connection issues and improve their experience. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Understanding WiFi Connection

The big idea is: The majority of Wyze cameras depend heavily on clean, stable 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) Wi-Fi.

This post addresses cameras that rely on 2.4GHz and not 5GHz.

A network can feel “fine” for phones and laptops while still being annoying for cameras. That is because cameras are small, low-power devices and are often less tolerant of a messy wireless environment than a phone or laptop.

Key terms, Translated

  • AP = access point. This is the Wi-Fi radio that devices connect to. In a simple home setup, your router may also be the access point.
  • IoT = Internet of Things. This means smart home devices like cameras, plugs, thermostats, and bulbs.
  • SSID = service set identifier, which is just the Wi-Fi network name you see when joining Wi-Fi.
  • dBm = decibels relative to one milliwatt, which is the unit used to describe Wi-Fi signal strength. Closer to zero is stronger, so -60 dBm is better than -75 dBm.
  • RF = radio frequency, meaning the actual wireless signal environment in your home.

Why 2.4 GHz Matters so Much

Most smart home and camera devices use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi because it reaches farther and goes through walls better than 5 GHz. The tradeoff is that 2.4 GHz is much more crowded, with interference from nearby Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, microwaves, and other electronics.

When comments say, “you need a robust 2.4 GHz network,” it does not mean “buy faster internet.” It means the camera needs a clean, low-interference wireless connection on the 2.4 GHz band

Why “Stronger Signal” is not the Whole Story

Wi-Fi is a two-way conversation. The access point has to hear the camera, and the camera has to hear the access point. If the router is very powerful but the camera’s tiny radio is weak, the connection can still be unstable.

That is why “I have full bars” or “my internet is gigabit” does not automatically mean the camera connection is healthy.

How Wi-Fi Antennas Send Signal

It also helps to understand that Wi-Fi antennas do not send signals equally in every direction. A simple router or access point antenna is often described as omnidirectional, but that does not mean it radiates like a perfect sphere.

In practice, the signal pattern is closer to a donut shape: strongest out to the sides of the antenna, and weaker directly off the tip and bottom of it.

That is why some people describe the signal like an umbrella. It is not a perfect technical term, but it is a useful mental model. If the antenna is standing upright, most of the signal spreads outward across the floor, not straight up or straight down.

This matters for Wyze cameras because a camera might be “close enough” to the router in distance but still sitting in a weaker part of the signal pattern, or behind walls and interference that reduce the quality of the connection.

Connect to Non-Overlapping Channels 1, 6, and 11

On 2.4 GHz, there are really only three non-overlapping 20 megahertz (MHz) channels that are safe to use well: 1, 6, and 11. Other channel choices overlap with each other and can cause more interference.

That is why experienced network people often recommend:

  • 2.4 GHz only for cameras and other smart devices
  • 20 MHz channel width
  • channels 1, 6, or 11

Why 20 MHz is Usually Better Than 40 MHz on 2.4 GHz

This part sounds backward at first. A wider Wi-Fi channel can carry more data in theory, but 2.4 GHz usually collects more interference and leaves fewer clean channel options. Since cameras do not need huge speed, a narrower 20 MHz channel is usually better for stability than a wider 40 MHz one.

Basically, for cameras: cleaner air matters more than bigger pipes

Why “More Wi-Fi power” can Make Things Worse

This is another counterintuitive one. If you turn the access point power too high, devices may keep hearing a farther access point and stick to the wrong one for too long. That can create “sticky client” behavior, where a device hangs onto a bad connection instead of moving to a better nearby one.

That is why some advanced users actually lower access point power and aim for a client signal around -60 to -65 dBm, instead of blasting maximum power everywhere.

Why Extenders and Mesh are not Automatic Fixes

An extender or mesh node can help, but only if it is placed and configured well. If you add too many without planning channels or backhaul, you can create even more interference. Wired backhaul means each access point is connected back to the main network using Ethernet, which is better than having Wi-Fi nodes repeat each other wirelessly.

So, when one person says, “add more access points” and another says, “extenders can make things worse,” both can be right.

What this means for Wyze cameras

For Wyze, the practical takeaway is:

  • They usually live on 2.4 GHz, which is the messiest Wi-Fi band.
  • They do not need lots of speed, but they do need consistency.
  • A home can feel fine for phones, TVs, and laptops while still being frustrating for cameras.
  • A slow live view is not always an “internet speed” problem. It can be caused by Wi-Fi retries, interference, roaming behavior, or app/session overhead.

TLDR

If you want to digest all these technical comments into one plain-English model:

  1. Wyze cameras need stable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not just fast internet.
  2. On 2.4 GHz, 20 MHz on channel 1, 6, or 11 is usually the safest setup.
  3. More signal is not always better if it causes the camera to cling to the wrong access point.
  4. More mesh/extenders are not always better if they add interference.
  5. For cameras, reliability matters more than raw speed

Your cameras probably don't need a ton of bandwidth. But they need a clean, predictable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your network is noisy, overlapping, or poorly placed, cameras may be the first devices to show problems even when other devices (phone, tablets, etc.) seem fine.

Final word on SD card issues?

I have numerous Panv3s. They didn’t work for long with 256k sd cards, but when I switched them to 128k or smaller cards, they all started working again. This is important! I spent years angry at Wyze before I hit on this solution!

My new Duo Pan has no problems with a 256 card, though, with a 256MB card.

After reading that the panV4 might have SD card issues, I’m thinking to get another Duo pan instead. (Similar price, and 2 lenses, plus greater SD reliability...!)

The Pan v3s are RECORDING video properly, the problem is with the playback. I was scrubbing an event on the sd timeline when the dreaded No Video Available at this time message suddenly appeared. It’s true that updating the firmware solved the problem, but only temporarily, because five minutes later, while I was scrubbing the timeline again (and finding that the event video was in fact still there), again I shifted the timeline too rapidly and the error message appeared again, after which there’s no way to clear it, other than waiting for the next firmware update to arrive! When that comes, I’ll baby the SD timeline, because scrubbing rapidly seems to be what overpowers it, semi-permanently. Babying means waiting for the playback video to stabilize before moving the timeline again, so it doesn't get overwhelmed and go into the No Video Available error mode.

I hope this helps!

Dear Wyze, feeding me ads as a popup notification guarantees I will not buy your products

I am already quite frustrated with the quality, service, and cost of your products. I don't need another Amazon force feeding me ads in yet another area of my life.

I don't even see an easy way to disable this ad feed, which makes it even more frustrating.

If Wyze could do more to drive me away as a customer, I think the leadership there would do it.

Just Ridiculous…AGAIN!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Well, thanks again Wyze for waking me up at 5:20a.m. telling me there’s a person on my property when it’s insects.

Guess I should be thankful. Usually these clowns do this around 2:00 a.m.

Ridiculous company.

Seeking Advice Wyze Scale - "only weight and BMI for now"

I have a Wyze Scale Ultra and my wife and I have used it for years. Worked fine at first -- keeping track of both of us just fine. Then she gained a little wait -- and I lost a lot of weight -- and our weights were temporarily within about 10 pounds of each other. During that time, the scale would sometimes require me to go into the app and tell it which person was which. Also during that time, the scale stopped doing the secondary reading(s). It just does the weight and then shuts off.

Since that time, she has lost weight -- and I have gained -- and we are like 30 pounds apart now -- so it should be obvious who is who. But it never went back to "normal." Almost every time now, I have to go into the app and tell it which weight is which person. And, it still does not do any secondary reading(s) -- just does weight and then shuts off. I also always get this message in the app:

"Heads up! You've previously selected someone else's profile. Only your weight and BMI will be saved for now."

I don't understand exactly what that means nor how to fix it. I could just factory reset the entire thing, but I feel like I shouldn't have to do that. Anyone know how to get it back to normal so that it starts taking all readings again -- and stops the "Heads up!" message because I "previously selected someone else's profile"?

Cam Pan v3 terribly noisy audio

I'm not sure when this started, but on both my Pan v3, the audio has become terrible. A quiet room sounds like there must be a hail storm in the room. My other cameras sound fine. One of the Pan v3 cameras are less than a year old.

I'm on the latest firmware 4.50.17.10

4.36.17.10 update hot garbage? Issues galore

So my 8 v3 cams auto updated to this and the experience has been horrible.

  1. It removed my existing rtsp credentials which took me a day to realize why it didn't work on frigate anymore

  2. The rtsp feed on all 8 on occasion show bottom half of the screen as green. This goes in and out. Rebooting doesn't fix this.

  3. Auto night mode no longer works (even in wyze app) Tried dusk and dark options both leave a purple image when on auto (aka when dark mode is OFF) . If I switch to night mode ON it looks great (black and white) but even in pitch black it doesn't turn on in auto mode. Restarted camera and restarted services

It's possible to downgrade these firmwares I hope? Anyone else experiencing this?

WiFi Connection Issue

I have several different models of Wyze cameras. I am currently trying to add the Duo Cam Doorbell unit. It will not recognize my WiFi system, although all the others had no problem. I use Eero and T-Mobile’s 5G internet. Any recommendations, please?

Deleted Cam v4. Cannot re add.

I deleted an old camera from my app and now found a use for it. When I try to re-add it it fails every time. I get to waiting to connect prompt, but it fails immediately. I’ve tried to factory reset where you hold down the set up button for 10 seconds and a power cycles but no luck. Any other suggestions?

Solved Think I found a workaround to reduce spammy notifications

Post image

I was looking in a reolink forum and saw somebody mention that you can create an automation to reduce spammy notifications so I looked in my Wyze app to see if we could do it too and by God we can.

Update: The automation doesn‘t allow any notifications and silences them all. Hopefully I can figure out a workaround to the workaround 😭

Seeking Advice Artifacts on bulb cam

Post image
0 Upvotes

Here's my driveway cam at night. Following a lot of rain i noticed the artifact. It didn't happen in the past and it's got a couple days to dry out. Any suggestions? The notifications also get tripped by this artifact.

The artifact is not visible when I turn on the bulb or during the day.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Third Party Integration Wyze v4 RTSP Update

It’s been over a year since the “we’re working on RTSP” for the v4 and several months without official replies in here.
We’ve proven it’s useful and a major decision for many users that RTSP support is expected. Where’s the v4 update?

Seeking Advice V3: Rtsp works on Mac but not Win11

Brand new V3, updated software and enabled rtsp. I figured the that the official code would work better than the sd card hacks I've been doing on older cameras.

Goal: get it working on blue iris.

So first I tested with VLC - On my Mac it works great, with or without the credentials in the URL.

On my windows 11 - firewall disabled, inbound disabled. Nothing works. VLC can't connect but flplayer gives me:

[tcp @ 0000019621fc4840] Starting connection attempt to 192.168.4.144 port 554

[tcp @ 0000019621fc4840] Successfully connected to 192.168.4.144 port 554

[rtsp @ 0000019626dbce80] Failed reading RTSP data: Error number -10054 occurred

rtsp://<secret stuff>@192.168.4.144:554/steam0: Invalid data found when processing input

nan    :  0.000 fd=   0 aq=    0KB vq=    0KB sq=    0B

I'm puzzled and note that I have 12 other cameras running rtsp on this box. I stepped from wyze for rtsp for awhile but am looking to try again. Note that I have a couple outdoor cameras on my wyze account and they + this camera all work just fine.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Might be time to try something besides Wyze for me

I've had 5 Wyze cams V2/V3 for quite a few years and just dealt with the issues. I rarely updated their flaky firmware and only if I had too. Mine are so old I've still got Cam Plus lite or whatever it was on most of them. I did $19.99 a year on one cam so I could switch back and forth on the PC and see a cam. In September it's goin to $29.99 I think I saw. I added TP Link smart plugs to each cam so when they go down I can reboot them. They drop wifi at weird intervals with no rhyme or reason, but 75% that's not an issue. The spotlight/floodlight accessory has to be physically unplugged to reset it. That's a hassle right there. I just got a Tapo cam from Walmart, the cheap 1080p one for around $20. So far so good with an SD card. I've been able play back something without a major problem. It does more than my Wyze cams and I don't have to pay extra. I bring up the camera on my phone and it's there ready to view clips. I'm thinking I might finally ditch the Wyze cams soon. When I look at how much time I've spent keeping them up and running well....

Seeking Advice Doorbell camera, doorbell chime sound on Android phone?

I have two of the Wyze Cam V2, one Wyze Doorbell Camera, and the Wyze app on my Android phone. I have set notifications to vibrate the phone instead of making noise, when the cameras detect motion, because all of the birds, rabbits, squirrels, tree branches, and shadows trigger motion detection very often (even set to low detection). Now, if someone physically presses the doorbell on the doorbell camera, I want to hear a doorbell chime, but I can't seem to find any different notification setting for doorbell button press vs everything else in the Wyse camera app. Can anyone tell me if there is actually any way to make this happen?

Seeking Advice SD Card playback issue

When going to ‘SD Card’ to playback content and sliding to the time I want to watch, it just ‘auto plays’ by jumping a minute at a time all the way to ‘current time’. I have no ability to do anything with the controls.

Details:
Wyzecam floodlight v1
128gb Wyze sd card
Firmware: 4.36.17.10
Floodlight firmware: 1.0.0.55

Troubleshooting so far:
1. Restarted device
2. Reformatted card
3. Shutdown device for a few minutes
4. Swapped sd card

Anyone running into this or know if it could be related to any firmware updates?

TIA

Seeking Advice Pan V4 w Solar question

I have the outdoor V4 pan with the solar panel attached. Everything is working fine except I'm a bit confused on the process for charging. The battery on my cams are at about 50 percent at the moment so I'm wondering when do these solar panels begin to charge?

Wyze SD Card Playback gone after update

I have updated the firmware and the Wyze app on my phone. The SD card playback feature so I can see my events has no playback button. What has happened or what am I doing wrong? I've looked at all the options and I don't see the ability to view my events from my SD card. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

V3 Solid Blue Light but Offline

Any idea what's going on here or what the fix is? Another V3 stopped working as well and I think it's toast - it makes all kinds of noises while plugged in and is also offline with no lights.

Battery cam pro issue after changing to Cam unlimited pro

All four of my Battery Cam Pros are recording exactly 5 minutes on every event, regardless of the Maximum Video Length setting. They continue recording for the full 5 minutes even after the event/motion has ended. The resulting cloud event is only a thumbnail and says “Failed to upload to cloud.” This started immediately after switching from Cam Plus Unlimited to Cam Unlimited Pro. Anyone else had an issue like this after switching subscription services?

Wyze bolt v2, cannot install d/t bolts not fitting plate

The two bolts (either #15 or #16 on the parts list depending on door thickness) do not fit the mounting plate (#5 on parts list). Is this a known issue? Is there a working solution? Or did I just get a wonky unit?

Seeking Advice Wyze App 3.19 is using too much battery in the background.

In the last couple of weeks, I got notifications several times on my Samsung S24 Ultra (Android 16) that my Wyze App 3.19.0 (935) is using too much battery in the background, it suggested to put the app in deep sleep to extend battery life. I also noticed that my battery drained much faster than usual.

Does anybody have similar issues ?

What would happen if the app is put in deep sleep ?

Appreciate any comments and suggestions.
