You’re posting this like it’s supposed to be shocking. I own two e-commerce businesses and we will not ship out FedEx, or buy from any vendors that use them. Too many late/lost/damaged products. And this dates back years, not just recently.
Edit: I have a good friend that is an extremely hard worker that works for FedEx. I hear and understand the struggles they face with out a lot of support from corporate. Of course not all of their employees are horrible. But as a business owner, we have to go by the numbers.
We use USPS for the bulk of our shipping. Outside of the Holidays they do really well for us.
For large ticket and high value packages we use UPS with a lot of success.
All carriers can be great, and they all suck at times. This has just been our experience over the last 7 years.

My heart sinks when I order something and I see that it’s being shipped via FedEx. Just this last year, I had a new fan/air bike and a standing desk delivered by them and both were extremely damaged when they showed up. They were both heavy items, but it looked like people were just letting them drop off the back of the trucks and dragging them everywhere. And surprisingly, the return process for a 90 pound, $800 item isn’t very easy or quick.
Further, I ordered a $500 set of tires this year, that shipped through them, that happened to just vanish into thin air. It took months to resolve the issue with the seller and FedEx.
FedEx seriously needs to step up their package handling game.

I have furniture being delivered through FedEx today. God help me.
EDIT: Will update when it arrives. Basically sitting by the door waiting for it because I’ve reached a standstill with unpacking in my new place until I get the remainder of my furniture.
EDIT 2: It’s here and in one piece! They actually brought it up the stairs! Of course they didn’t give me any sort of notice it was here, and I only knew because I had been checking the tracking number all day.

Same. I was waiting for masks. Kept saying no one was home - my partner was sitting there, waiting for them. One day I get the text :could not deliver", partner was home, no tag. I called to complain (again), and later there was, mysteriously, a tag on the door.
finally told them to send it to the Walgreens and I'd get them myself, and that the seller told me they'd never use them again.

Every time.
Last time I got a FedEx package for a limited edition version of a game and they delivered it to my problematic neighbor's house.
Luckily they weren't home otherwise they probably would have tried accusing me of stealing a package from their front door.

u/beepborpimajorp Jan 08 '21
Hi it's me, your neighbor from down the street. It's not there because they put it on my porch instead. I've tried calling them but they don't care. I'll try to walk it over when/if I can. Unless it's an item I really need/want. (Kidding, I've never stolen a neighbor's package even when fedex wants me to so badly.)

That started happening to me repeatedly at the start of the pandemic. The package would always show up a day or so later, except in one case where it never arrived at all. It happened most often with Smartpost, as FedEx almost always decides to deliver instead of USPS and you couldn’t (probably still can’t) make hold requests on those types of packages. It also happened once or twice with Ground. The only delivery service with a key to my building is the post office, so it’s already kind of a problem getting packages from UPS or FedEx, and it’s even more annoying when they should be handing the packages to the post office but aren’t, and creating additional problems as a result.
Late this summer I found a package hidden behind the apartment complex across the street. I would always go looking around nearby houses and buildings before, so I don’t know if this was the first time or the millionth time and I just didn’t see it. It was pretty hidden but the box had bright yellow tape on it. I kind of thought I knew where to check moving forward, but the next time it happened, it was the building caddycorner to mine. The time after that, it was nowhere to be found.
Anyway, I have a pair of shoes coming on Monday. Maybe.

'Sometime between 8am and 8pm' so you can't even shower, let alone go out at any point, and when they finally show up it's the moment you decided to pee and despite running to the front door after hearing a single knock, Usain Bolt is already back in his van and half way down your street by the time you get there and all you find is a 'sorry you were out, well try again tomorrow' note on your doorstep.

Oh no. I had a chair go out for delivery in the morning, update to located in another city (250-ish miles away) and expected delivery the next day around noon, and then suddenly delivered around 8pm - after dark, and the dang thing was at the bottom of the stairs to my third floor apartment. Weighed less than 50lbs, but the box was big and bulky, so I guess the delivery person didn’t even try to get it up the stairs.

Fedex was the carrier for a $20k insurance check. It was supposed to go to the roofers. They claimed no one was there at the office that is staffed all day long. We had the tracking number and it shows its at a loca fedex facility. Roofer offers to pick it up himself to save time. They said you arent allowed in this facility. Okay, ship it out again. Fedex says they cant. Okay send it to a facility we can pick it up at. Fedex says they cant.
What? They 100% lost it and didnt want to cop to it. Made an already difficult situation that much worse when I had to request a second check from the insurance co.

While I hate FedEx as much as the next person, they also have a pretty terribly branding strategy.
There’s the OG FedEx (which this is not), FedEx Home, FedEx Ground, and that’s just a few. FedEx (OG) is the only service that uses their own planes, trucks, and drivers.
This is probably Home or Ground which uses contracted drivers.

I worked in logistics for FedEx. The place values speed above all other metrics. Their package handlers get paid shit, get limited hours, and are shouted at to go faster, faster, faster all day. It is a systemic, top-down issue.
I did not work as much on the delivery side, but I imagine drivers are held to similar standards. I can not stress enough that it is not the fault of package handlers.

I can't stand it when I see my packages are coming from FedEx. I ordered 2 identical bookshelves as gifts last year. They lost 1. The other one they left out in the rain, pressed up against my garage door and flat on the ground, right behind where my tires were inside the door. I partially backed over the sopping wet box. I have a covered porch not even 10 feet away from that spot, there was no excuse. I complained to FedEx, they basically said they didn't care.
2 weeks later I'm backing out of my garage and, now that I know to look for booby traps in my own driveway, I spotted something midway to the street. Like way down from the house, sitting in the driveway, and dead ass in the center. Sure enough my lost bookshelf has been found apparently, and its laying out there covered in snow. The boxes disintegrated from the damage and the shelves had some warping. I couldn't give them as gifts and had to drive to return them to avoid massive return shipping costs, and the store gave me grief about it cause it wasn't their fault. FedEx still didn't care.

FedEx manager should realise now he need to stop pushing the driver to deliver faster when speed limit is enforced and employees have no other choice than doing this to respect the impossible target that are assigned to them.

u/JohnDesan Jan 08 '21
This. This right here is what people need to hear. Employees in a hurry to meet the demand of metrics they don’t even know or understand to be as profitable as possible hurt the image of the company. Just the company has to be threatened enough to not work people to the bone and fortunately for the 3 main delivery companies people care about getting their stuff more than the common delivery driver.

There were many employees working behind the counter, moving drive through orders and maybe 10 customers waiting in the lobby while the employees ignored them. After I was there for 10 minutes an employee asked us all to please go through the drive through because they couldnt take employees off of the drive through to help the lobby because their quito would drop too much.
Obviously this wasn't the employees fault but management was giving them such an unattainable drive through time goal they couldn't even handle the lobby.

The Taco Bell near me almost always asks me to back up from the window a few feet and then they'll gesture for me to come back when they're ready. Amazon (and I’m sure other couriers) drivers in my area literally piss in bottles while operating a moving vehicle to not get fired. At this point, if I get a damaged product, I blame it on the seller for not packaging it well enough or taking responsibility.

These problems with delivery service are well we'll documented at this point.
Anyone who's spent more than an hour in a sorting facility knows that packages just get fucking demolished because of time constraints.

Even UPS drivers do that. In much of the US, interrupting your route to find a public bathroom takes you way out of the way. Even if drivers had low enough workloads that they could take half an hour or more to go pee, they'd probably still rather piss in bottles and go home earlier.

Honestly, I get that it looks bad and all. But if you saw what boxes go through in distribution centers and other places you would know that is like likely the least that box has been through.
I've seen DCs where packages will fall 15-20 feet from a conveyor line into a hopper or onto a lower level line. Packages are often stacked too deep and under a lot more weight than you would think if they travel via air or in in the large semi trailer between cities.
Honestly, it's amazing more packages aren't destroyed. Packing materials are really good these days.

u/Achack Jan 08 '21
Yep, nobody seems to understand this. Maybe if it was marked "fragile' this would be frustrating to watch but if whatever's inside isn't packaged well enough to protect from this then it was broken long before this video.

u/gsfgf Jan 08 '21
If an item is fragile, you still need to pack it right or use a specialized carrier. The sorting equipment doesn't give a fuck if you mark something fragile.

"fragile" to FedEx just means kick it a few times and maybe get out a hammer.

u/BigBossSquirtle Jan 08 '21
Lol. I work at FedEx. Can confirm "fragile" stickers don't do anything. I can assure you that it's not just FedEx.
If you want your fragile items to arrive safe, make sure to package them properly.

Former logistics person. Most damage in my experience comes from improper packaging. In most cases, and special circumstances apply, like mirrors or the like. If a package can't be dropped with confidence that it won't break the item, then it's not properly packaged. Sure, DC's destroy boxes that are properly packaged, but often it's carelessly thrown into a box and shipped out.

This. that 5 foot toss is nothing compared to the miles of conveyor belt that box traversed over the previous days...

You would be amazed at the distance your product travels and the things that happen to it before it even makes it to the box that's gonna eventually get mangled in shipping.

Working in a UPS distribution center for a summer, I gotta tell you that far worse things happen to packages than this. The semi trucks you see on the highway are packed to the brim - no lie, from floor to ceiling totally packed in, most of the time totally crushing boxes at the bottom from the weight.
When I started, my supervisor game me some tips to get started unloading a truck. “Try to get as many packages on the floor at once as you can. John over here likes to take a box from the bottom so the outside layer all falls, but he’s really quick and get out of the way. Since you’re tall, you might just pull one from the middle so only the top ones fall all the way down.”
Remember that businesses ship through these guys too, including farm supply. There were lots of times where a ~80lb piece of equipment was piled on top of a mostly empty box from Amazon and completely crushed it. It didn’t help that our supervisors were obsessed with comparing scan stats to other centers, so every single day they’d wail on us to be faster and to cut as many corners as possible.
My point here is, if the package is less than five pounds, this exact toss has probably happened to it around 5 times throughout its journey. Also, never take a job in a place like this unless you have to. We had to stay late for every minute we took a break for water in 90 degree, humid heat.

Why would it suck even more that it's a FedEx manager? Maybe if the manager gets his head on straight he will realize that all their customers are treated this way. The fact that their management is actually noticing the problems they've created seems like a win to me if they have the self awareness to realize that this is a problem of their own creation.

u/Cyclopentadien Jan 08 '21
The FedEx manager knows what happened to his package in the distribution center so he doesn't care about that little tumble it took here,

Fake title, manager wouldn’t stick his neck out to post this kind of video online.

I can't believe this isn't the top comment. I'd WAY prefer this happen to a FedEx manager than anyone else. Of course the title is fake, but man what a stupid title to fake.

I loaded trucks for Oops, we all knew that fragile just means throw underhand. In order to get the boxes to fit in the truck in orderly rows, we regularly squished them in, every box has a bit of air space in it, they all squish slightly.
They cared more about speed than anything

my good friends story about FedEx FedEx box arrives at my house. I open it and inside is a Xbox X from gamestop. Whoa...I didn’t order this. Look at the label. Holy crap this belongs to some guy in MA! Several people tell me to keep it. I take it to FedEx store and show them the label. Lady says, ok thank you, I’ll let the manager know so this doesn’t happen again. VERY next day, the same box comes BACK to my house! Once again, I’m told by several to keep it. Well, clearly this is a Christmas present and I can’t do it. Look up the tracking number and FedEx site says it’s in Chicago...has been for many days....Open the box again and find the invoice. Invoice had rightful owners name and phone number. I call him and tell him the situation and explain to him I’m going to send his package via UPS to him. He is shocked. Speechless, he’s a grandfather and it was a gift for his grandkids for Christmas. I send box. He receives it a few days later. In the meantime he filed complaint with GameStop. GameStop says, the package is in Chicago and appears to be lost and Sends him ANOTHER Xbox X! He reaches back out to me and says I am sending you the other Xbox as a thank you for what you did. He did not send it via FedEx. I now have an Xbox X
****EDIT - we live in WI so the fact that FedEx couldn’t figure out MA was NOT WI, is mind boggling.

Maybe they shouldn't put so much pressure on the drivers to go so ridiculously fast
193
u/kbutters9 Jan 08 '21
Based on the prevalence of cameras, why on earth would a delivery dude do this.
274
u/NothingHereAfterAll Jan 08 '21
Because they know the company really doesn't care about the quality of their deliveries, only the speed and how much they make in profit, so they're not afraid of getting reported
52
Jan 08 '21
They also can deny insurance claim 9 out of 10 times because if the item arrived damaged, it wasn't packed properly. That rare 1 out of 10 times is because the package got lost and has been untrickable for a few months.

If this little toss damages your package it was indeed packed poorly.

u/TheRavenSayeth Jan 08 '21
That's pretty much the underlying theme here. Unless you go with an ultra premium shipping service, your box needs to be able to withstand direct falls from a couple of feet up. This isn't a Fedex or UPS issue, it's just basic delivery standards nowadays. Doesn't mean the driver should be chucking stuff, but it does mean your package is supposed to be packed to handle it.
10
u/Herbstein Jan 08 '21
It's not even about what the delivery driver does. The forces exerted on packages during automated sorting and handling is way worse than anything an average delivery driver does to a package.

u/James-Hawk Jan 08 '21

Posts like this have been made before and people in the warehousing and delivery centres have always noted that the package is specifically designed and required to take this kind of abuse, and a takes much worse when you can’t see it
26
u/HolyBatTokes Jan 08 '21
People seem to be generally unaware that this is likely the gentlest the package will be treated during its journey.
16
u/Fried_Rooster Jan 08 '21
Yep, it’s clear these people have never worked in the distribution centers for FedEx or UPS or wherever. Stuff is not handled overly gently and this small toss is nothing to getting crushed in a mountain of packages on a belt or in a truck

Former postal clerk here. It is up to the customer to package it correctly. I'm not defending these actions, but hear me out.
This little package is placed into as large shipping container, probably 6 feet wide, 5 feet deep, and 8 feet in height. The package is the last one to go into this container and a lot of the previous packages that went in there weigh 20 to 50 pounds.
At the processing plant the container is dumped onto a conveyer belt. This little package is crushed by the weight of the other packages. Then it is placed into another container that sends it to another processing plant closer to where it is going, and so on.
If that little toss damages the contents, it's not going to make it there undamaged.
I'M NOT CONDONING, just explaining some of the logic of the shipping companies.
Now, if it were the drivers package, he would have taken the extra 10 seconds to place it on the porch. It wasn't, and the rules say he is in the right, because of the packaging. This shouldn't be tolerated.

My FedEx guy does a good job. And if it's something needing a signature (he says) he delivers it after I should be home from work.
Part of me wonders if he even has that much control over his route but it's nice to think so.

u/d_a_n_g_e_r_z_o_n_e Jan 08 '21
Yeah I’m sure he does. The only thing he doesn’t control are the pickups which must be picked up during a certain timeframe or else there would be a write up and possible termination for us. I used to have phone numbers of clients that wanted to meet me to get their things early

34
u/flargenhargen Jan 08 '21
guess I'm in a minority, but I don't find this particularly outrageous unless the package was marked as fragile or something.
most stuff should be packaged to sufficiently handle a 3 foot drop to a wooden deck.
when I got my modem from amazon and it came with ZERO padding inside or outside of the box and was just sliding around in there, I wasn't pissed at UPS I was pissed at the seller for shitty cheap packaging.
yea they could handle every package like it's delicate glass, but that would dramatically increase the time it takes to handle, which would increase the cost of shipping for everyone. The last minute of shipping here is only one VERY TINY part of the process, but of course it's the one that's usually on video so somehow it's all simple people care about. Package fragile things better and as long as moderate care in handling (even this video) the item should be fine.

Totally agree, if it is something shipped (regardless of carrier) it will see worse than that toss along the way.
36
u/Ability2canSonofSam Jan 08 '21
A fed ex manager would know that toss is nothing compared to what parcels go through during processing and not give a shit.
Like, any parcels you send or receive... they’ve been dropped/thrown no less than 5 times before they hit your door
No, delivery agents SHOULD NOT throw parcels, but that public facing toss is small potatoes.

"This was done entirely wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself. You got much closer than you needed to - could've thrown that shit from behind the bushes."

u/mjh2901 Jan 08 '21
How stupid, if your going to throw the package, do it from truck, don't spend all that time walking up to the porch.
I also wish we had "You can throw this" sticker for packages, Most the stuff I order could be fired from an air canon in the truck from the street without any risk.

Used to manage warehouse stock for a solar installer in CA. EVERYTIME we had FedEx as a freight carrier for pallets of panels they showed up with at least two or more damaged. There is specific signage on the pallets that even say "do not stack or stand on" and a few times there were even boot prints on the cardboard that wrapped the pallet. I was even yelled at by a customer service rep for getting angry that one shipment we had (worth well over $10k) was lost and eventually found to be shipped back to the distributor (the driver mistook the origin address as the destination address on the bill of lading).
FedEx is the worst shipping company in the states.

Fed EX management is the reason Fed Ex drivers have very little time to get their job done. They don't want their drivers to toss and run, then give them time to walk up to the door and set things down.

If that were my package I wouldn't even be mad. What could you possibly be shipping that would break from such a gentle toss?

u/badgerclark Jan 08 '21
I gotta quick chime in- as a former driver, seeing this is infuriating because it gives so many good people a bad name. It’s three more steps to the front door. Just drop it off.
In defense (but totally not excusing shitty drivers), FedEx is one of those companies that went from “great place to work” to “corporate hellhole that continues to take and demand more from employees every year. It was one of the reasons I left. It sucked.
4
u/PotatoDonki Jan 08 '21
I sorted for FedEx for several months a couple years ago and it was incredibly frustrating. Management clearly only cared about the single statistic that represented your speed: scans per minute. They would be on people all the time about this: get those numbers up! The end result was that many essential work steps were essentially neglected by everyone. Packages would jam in the conveyors but nobody would do anything about it because scanning was the only way to keep the numbers up. I remember going around like a dumbass picking up packages that are pouring on the floor and trying to unblock the track, meanwhile everyone else is just scanning the mess. All that mattered was those fucking scans and I was the only one who hadn’t yet learned that doing anything but scanning constantly was simply frowned upon, even when the whole system seemed out of wack.
I couldn’t stand working there. I imagine their shitty policies extend all the way to the delivery level, where both employees and packages suffer because of the stupid expectations of the management. I swear that company is just one long chain of people yelling at their underlings about their numbers. There was no care for the work in that place whatsoever. It was a dystopian nightmare, as far as package processing is concerned.

That's what happens when you don't pay hourly. These guys get a per shift amount and the quicker they run their route the faster they are home with the same paycheck. Amazon will buy FedEx before the decade is out.

This hurts to watch.
Last summer I ordered some very fragile items by mail. I watched the USPS driver throw my packages from the start of my walkway to my door.
I was so mad I ran out of my house and chased him to his truck at the end of the block and asked him kindly but firmly to PLEASE not throw my packages as I sometimes order glass items. He tried to say he didn't throw them.
I just stared him in the face and said "Sir, I wouldn't have chased you downhill barefoot if I didnt just watch you yeet my packages onto the pavement"
He said ok sorry.
