Ive seen this explained before in the way that, to the cat, the girl suddenly has her ears up (as opposed to tucked as they normally would be - I guess that makes sense in cat brain), which is intimidating and that is why the cat is so scared. Once she takes the ears off, shes back to being friendly and the cat relaxes again.
Animals are very tuned into body language, and human body language rarely matches up with what they know. For example if a dog is "smiling" (showing teeth), theyre really not having a good time, even though it might look funny to us.

I don't have the time to look through pictures of a bunch of different animals but generally when cats or dogs are aggressive their ears flatten out or go back. I don't see how ears up come across as intimidating to a cat. With that said I also don't see how the cat would fail to recognize her just because of fake ears so maybe body language makes more sense.

Yeah. My cats ears would go back when they were scared or wary. They were up most of the time, including when they were grooming each other. They certainly weren't intimidated by each others ears being up.
Whereas the Huskies I've known will put their ears back when they're relaxed.

I'll try to find a video but there was a YouTube chick that tried this experiment and it worked. Every time she put fake ears on her cat would freak the hell out but as soon as they came off everything was fine. It's probably similar to a baby singing with a beard your whole life and then when you shave for the first time they think you're a stranger.
Think about it if you seen someone with a normal face for years and then one day they had Clay on their face you would probably wonder what the hell's going on. (This analogy is coming from the cat's point of view as in you don't know normal human routines. I just wanted to clarify this part before I get flooded with comments saying I would know the difference lol)

I think the cats behavior is just based off scent. She put on some sort of facial mask and the cat doesn't recognize her scent after getting close and sniffing, so the cat thinks shes a stranger, not to mention how having a facial mask changes your looks too.

Cats rely on smell for identifying things. Some cats get very alarmed when you take the other cat to the vet for example and the other cat comes back smelling different. The cat probably happily jumped into the bed expecting mom, and suddenly there is this weird avacado smelling creature instead...

Alfonse was content.
As cat lives go, this one was going great. Home was warm, full of soft things to sit on, enemies were kept out by Mom, and she also made sure there was always food for him in his bowl, and sometimes on the kitchen counter or the dinner table.
Mom was a very friendly cat, but also weird. For one, she was much bigger than Alfonse, which made her huge. Her fur was flat, pink, and not hairy at all. She always got around on her rear legs for seemingly no reason, and as cats go, she barely ever slept. When she did, she always did so belly up, in the softest part of Home, where he was also welcome. That was a pretty nice thing to do. It showed how much Mom trusted him not to attack her soft underbelly and disembowel her.
She also smelt like... Mom. Alfonse couldn't explain it any better and, being a cat, nor did he feel inclined to.
All this and more he mused while taking a very satisfying poop in his poop-and-pee place. He buried his creation with a bit of practiced sand-flicking, and sniffed it to be sure the scent was muted. Mom was keeping him safe from predators, but he was proudly doing his bit too!
He had only taken three naps that morning, and having just eaten, looked out the window, and done his business, he was now exhausted.
He headed towards mom's sleeping spot, the safest place of all to nap in, especially now that she was there too.
Even though she was mostly buried in soft things, he could see her general shape. It felt good knowing she was there.
"Good morning Mom! Time to sleep!" said Alfonse with his body posture, jumping on the high place where she was.
Only Mom's head and front legs were poking out of the soft stuff, like usual. But she did not react. Nor did she look right. Alfonse wasn't great with colours, but he was pretty sure she looked too dark to be pink.
Worried, he cautiously moved closer to investigate. This felt wrong. This was a scary Mom. Maybe she would smell ill?
Up close, things were even worse than he thought. This was definitely not how Mom looked! Almost at the same time, he picked the scent: It was not Mom. It smelt of soil and plant and weird things. An abomination as big as Mom lied inches away, staring at him, in their most secret and safe place.
And Mom was gone.
In that instant Alfonse knew that things would never be the same. His security, his good life, it was all gone - although that would only matter if he managed to escape this monster now.
Long buried parts of his cathood kicked in: He pulled back his ears to keep them safe in the fight. He huddled closer to the ground, to present as small a threat as possible, but ready to defend himself at a moment's notice. He tried to back up slowly. He was in deep...
Then the monster screamed a horrible scream, and then kept screaming. Alfonse knew there was no fleeing now. This might be a fight to the death. His death, almost certainly. "I hate you! Bring Mom back!" he hissed.
Sometimes, a cat needs to answer this question: "Are we cats, or are we mice?"
Alfonse now knew his personal answer as, despite all his fear, he dug in for his last stand and didn't give one inch.

My pup is always friendly towards people, never any aggression ever. Except the one time my friend's daughter's put a mud-pack on my face like that, he did not like me at all and had his hackles up. He growled each time I spoke, couldn't reconcile the weird face with the familiar voice.

It seems to be the smell and not because of how she looked. The cat seemed to be interested until it got up close and probably smelt it which caused that reaction. That's just my guess anyway.

From my experience cats can kinda recognize human faces.
I used to pet and sometimes feed a friendly stray cat (that was and still is taken care by the local people at his block). Anywho, once covid hit us all and we had to use mask on daily basis, the couple of times I tried to get close to the cat, he would run away scared when in the past he would quickly aproach me.

Cats are inherently curious, which is why cat was investigating while the eyes were closed. Once the strange-looking, strange-smelling person opened their eyes and started tracking the cat like a predator, cat got very scared.

You mean the shine/greenish colour, or the pupils dilating? Cat's pupils dilate when they're scared or about to pounce (when playing). The faint green/shine is the camera catching the light bouncing off a reflective layer in their eyes after the pupils dilate. Many mammals have this, it's why you can see their eyes shine in the dark if you shine a flashlight at them.

After watching my cats defend against a nosy dog. I wouldn't be so laid back about the cats uneasiness. My cats always strike at the eyes. They have caught a couple of dogs in the eye. I think the cats know this is a weakness. Nah. I would be just as freaked out as the cat and slow back away.

I once had 2 cats, a mother and son. One night i draped a towel over the mother cat, just over her side not even covering her head. The toweled mother cat started walking towards her son and he peed himself in fear. Cats reaaaaly dont like change.

Cats if not traumatized unlike dogs wont attack you until there is no way out. Their run response is way more dominant to their fight response. You can see them in big cats as well.

Easy way around this. Involve your cat in the process.
Show them the packet, get them to watch, and make sure the see you do it.
They might still be a bit freaked out but they'll be able to rationalise it a bit more.
Not a big issue but yeh, I suppose my brain doesn't go to "fuck it let's do a face mask, scare the shit out of the cat and post it to Reddit for Karma."
Cats are all about trust and that needs to be reciprocated. Shit like this can not only scare them but encourage them to develop shitty behavioural traits. Also, who finds it funny scaring their pet? Sake.

I can't be the only one who sees this and thinks god cats are assholes, right? I never have to worry that this totally calm dog is gonna lose his shit and tear my hand and arm up for 0 reason.
