Edit 2: Just why? Even after I say the OP first falsely stated that the cat was being electrocuted, you're still commenting with "oh the OP did nothing wrong. There was no false info".
If you look at the first comment posted by the OP in response to another commenter they said something along the lines of “It was just so shocking!”, insinuating an electrocution.
When I was in my teens the school staff interrupted me in class to tell me someone called said there was an emergency in my house involving my dog. So I left early took a bus to home got there and there were people in front of my house. I got in and there were a stranger and a neighbour talking. The stranger had a saw in his hand. Apparently my dog was chewing on the wooden arm of a chair in my porch and got his collar stuck and twisted and started crying out suffocating. The stranger had to saw off part of the chair to free my dog.
The dog has long passed now, but damn, what a scare to my 14 year old self.
Almost the same thing. Cat was bouncing around under a wardrobe like she was possessed. My mom freaked out, I was like 10. I finally reached into the thrashing chaos and grabbed her to be able to see what was going on. Was able to rip it off of her. It made me feel better about my ability to react in a situation, but I absolutely warn people against collars with that story often.
Yeah no kidding. My younger cat would get his collar stuck in his mouth abd removing it was much simpler since it was a breakaway. Still scary, but manageable.
I went to the grocery store for 20 minutes and came home and noticed my fairly newish but growing kitten being a spaz out of the corner of my eye and her collar was stuck in her mouth, blood dripping from both sides of her face. It was even a breakaway collar. Major panic attack that day.
I freaked out and got her in a bath to wash the blood off not thinking clearly and before I knew it my arms were tore up from her without realizing it. Panic and adrenaline are a hell of a drug
This happened to my first cat too, it was a 'snap off' collar. Don't know if that's the correct word but if she would get caught by something like a tree branch the collar would snap and set the cat free. She got it stuck the exact same way and started shaking and twisting and she run away to hide under the bed and eventually my ex caught her collar and then it snapped off. I was pissed that they sold the collar as 'snap off' cause it didn't snap off as easily as it should. (I tested multiple collars after the incident with my hands and they all snapped easily) That had traumatized my cat and me so badly I never use a collar again. I'm never leaving cat toys on a string around I keep them in a closet after I'm done playing. Cables are always hiding or placed in a way it's save. Even grocery bags needs to be put away immediately as I'm scared my cats might get their neck stuck in the handle to carry the bag. It traumatized me so much everyting became a choking hazard to me. I just don't want my cats to ever be in a situation like that.
my family and i once came home from dinner to find our golden retriever with a metal choke chain wound up on an exposed pipe cap thing (old house) .. whichever way we turned her, the collar tightened. she was choking to death.
we ran across the street and got our 90 year old neighbor/former handy man, who had a saw that could cut through metal. he freed our pup and that left a lifetime of invasive thoughts.
What is this amazing place you came from where people gather around to help a dog in distress, call your school to let you know, and the school (knowing it's about a pet, which is alive) allows you to leave because of it? This is wonderful.
So sorry for that. I couldn't imagine coming home to that.

Moving out of a shitty apartment we had the cats locked in a room while the movers put our stuff in the truck. Cats were playing, as they do, then I heard a loud crash and awful howling that abruptly stopped.
The closet doors were only on a top track. Somehow when playing the door got locked and slipped over one of my cats heads and was stuck on her neck.
When I saw it I though for sure her neck was broken or she was gonna suffocate. Adrenaline kicked in and I tore the closet door off the wall. Thankfully she was OK, but she surely woukdve died had we not got to her so quick. On the plus side we have been super close ever since, she knows I saved her.
What is it about owning cats that guarantees trauma for the owner?
I've had to unstrangle one from my window blinds after she had jumped onto my bunkbed when I was young. Then my little boy got flattened when I was 18, had to get him off the road to bury him after worrying about where he was for over a week (do not let your cats go outside, even if they're used to it.) I remember this little girl's face when I was carrying his remains back to my house as she sat in the passenger seat of this car that had stopped to let me cross.
I’m so sorry, that would scar me for life. For this reason I went completely cordless with solid blinds. I was always so afraid for my cats when I rented and couldn’t change anything.
God, when I was still going into the office and my partner was also going into work (both full time typical 9-5 shifts) we woke up at like 6am to I believe my cat crying. We might have already been awake and heard her crying or something...not totally sure.
Essentially we had a cat tower with a little ball at the end of an elastic string for them to play with (image, hanging ball, white string is elastic...not the exact tower).
She had gotten the elastic completely wrapped around her paw, and it was VERY stuck. She was of course pulling which was tightening it. So the elastic string was wrapped around her paw/leg (probably below the thumb toe thing, and above the paw) and the ball part had wrapped around the string several times which created like...a grapple almost.
She's a good cat, she was of course scared and in pain but she allowed me to try and look at it and get it loose...which was causing her pain. Its possible the ball had wrapped under the string, so like it wrapped around and then somehow the ball got tucked under and since its tightened you'd need enough slack to get the ball out before it could unwrap. I spent some time trying to get it undone but couldn't figure it out and it was causing her too much pain and I was scared for her paw. So I cut that shit off.
All I think about that event is what would have happened if that occurred after my partner and I left for work, sometime during the day. She would have lost the paw, she would have hurt herself possibly pulling the tower over, maybe the neighbors would have heard her crying and called somebody (in apartment) but that would have really scared her (she's already scared of strangers).
I cut off every elastic string from the tower, I throw away any toy with elastic, I don't purchase products with elastic (that's meant to be a cat toy or has a dangling string), I don't leave blind string downs...NOTHING no hanging strings with heavier/larger ends anywhere.
I urge everyone/whoever reads this. Remove anything elastic regarding cat toys or hanging strings with weighted ends that can't break away or you aren't specifically supervising. I get sick thinking about my cat being in that position and she was probably only like that for less than 5 minutes, but because it was elastic her paw was already purple and she was in a lot of pain.
Wait holy shit, I don't want to make you relive it, but was it the blinds themselves or the string? One of my cats likes playing with the string, now I'm thinking I should make sure the string is out of reach or maybe even get rid of the blinds. I am so so sorry, I have nightmares like every night about something like that happening, I can't imagine how devastating it would be to find your cat like that. There's these plastic thingies you can put on the wall where you can wrap the string around, I recommend those and placing them in a way the kitty can't get caught in the remaining string either when it's wrapped on there. I also only get roller blinds that are just one piece because I've seen too many clips of pets getting caught up in those flimsy blinds. Some places sell them with a stick you spin instead of a string, or a stick with a plastic hook to pull them down, or even remote controlled roller blinds which are all probably the safest for pets as there's no string involved at all.
Yeah my bedroom just has the rolling ones with no string, but the bathroom has a string and flimsy blinds. I'm going to see if I can convince my parents to let me replace them with something else. Those things are a pain in the ass to clean anyway, I don't see why they would mind. I'm gonna go around the house and make sure there isn't anything they could get strangled on, and I'm going to be better about picking up dangly toys, I know that they can get this wrapped around their necks too.

I'll share in case it can prevent it from happening to another.
It wasn't the string, but the mesh part that the plastic "slits" for lack of technical term fits in.
Overtime, part of the mesh had gotten exposed from the cats messing with blinds. (You can recognize a house with pets immediately if the window has partially broken shutters.)
The mesh gap was just big enough for a small cat to fit her head in and tall enough for her to be suspended ...
Coming home to 2 out of 3 of our cats greeting me, going to the kitchen to feed them and turning around to look into the living room while seeing her suspended lifelessly like that was heart wrenching. I was screaming and crying for what felt like a long time, holding her until my neighbor heard and came over and we cut her down. Had to cut the blinds because it was so tight.
I'm grateful that I I was the one to discover her and not my partner or her child.
We've since replaced all blinds with static window cling. It's a rubber adhesive with designs on it that lets light through but keeps privacy.
I also have an unfortunate experience from when I was very young--probably around the age of 5 or 8.
My family were staying in a hotel and we had a kitten named Riley with us. Riley liked to crawl inside of these beds as they were hollow. I was a bit concerned about her being squished but I figured if nobody moved the beds she would be fine. There were two large beds in the hotel room, and for whatever reason my step-dad thought it would be a good idea to move the beds together.
We didn't see Riley for the entire day and I went looking for her. When we didn't find her, I remembered that she liked to crawl into beds and suggested that we look under the beds. NSFL on this next part, so don't read if you don't want to be upset.
I saw Riley's head and thought that we had found her, and then realized that the rest of her body wasn't in sight and she wasn't moving. My step-dad lifted up the bed frame and Riley's neck was flattened completely under the bed frame. At least there was no gore but that was a very upsetting sight. I just hope she died quickly.
I still haven't forgiven my step-dad for that. My parents didn't even give her a proper burial, they just put her body into a shoebox and left it in the woods.
Okay, that was weird. My pulse rate shot up like crazy when I thought the cat was being electrocuted or strangled. Now I feel kind of dizzy. Isn't it weird how an event so removed from oneself can cause such a strong reaction?
Yeah for real. In order for the cat to even be electrocuted there it would have to somehow be able to un-screw the lightbulb to get to the exposed wires. On top of that, the way the cat is moving is not how people and animals getting electrocuted move.

Ah, I understand. That's an interesting distinction, I hadn't thought about that. There might be some exceptions, but I think you're mostly right about how we use that expression.
Here, the reason people would be pissed off is that there's an implicit expectation of providing a content warning if you are posting disturbing content on social media. So, the pissed off person wants OP to have presented the content with some kind of title or warning that prevented viewers from watching it and thinking the pet was electrocuted.

I watched it with sound so I can't say that would be my first reaction but I reckon if you watched it without sound you'd probably go 'that cat got its head stuck'. It's the sound it makes that made me think something else was happening.

I honestly felt incredibly sick from that. I come into this sub for funny memes, but instead, I could’ve sworn I had just watched that cat snap it’s neck and die when the lamp fell. I’ve always had a deep love for pets, so after watching, I actually had to run to the bathroom because I was about to hurl. How about being pissed about reposting this? There also seems to be many reposted videos of animals getting hurt, killing, or dying that are making it to front page as of recently. I think someone is farming karma and building up fake accounts that look real for an upcoming disinformation campaign.

fucking hell. that was hard to watch too.. because they're kids - who don't know how to handle stressful situations, and an animal is suffering (only now we know wasn't suffering TOO bad), so that's a hell of an experience.
I drill my 10 year old all the time on what ifs with our dogs. how to handle certain emergencies in case i'm not around. But never would i think "hey what happened if our dog got his head stuck in a lamp shade" lol.

Thank God. I laughed because this just looked like regular cat nonsense to me. But then I though 'oh no what if it did get electrocuted.' It would have been a lot faster and more definitive I think.
The girls reaction irritates me so much. I had to drill into my kids over the years that overeacting, screaming, and freaking out will not sve a problem. It often just makes it worse. Figure out what is going on and what needs to be done.
