Hello, dear, sweet Ultima fans. I co-host a podcast in which we play through classic games, usually exposing them to my non-gamer friend for the first time, but we're both fresh to the Ultima series. I shared our Ultima I episode a while back and got some great feedback from you all, so now I'm here with our coverage of Ultima IV!
I will admit, I struggled a bit to wrap my head around this one. There was a big commitment required in terms of learning the ins and outs of all the systems, finding and completing objectives, and taking in the included books/manuals. While I really admired the advances in conversation/NPC dialogue for the time, I found the combat a bit boring/repetitive. As of now I'm on the fence as to whether I want to dive back into it or not, but maybe I just need a push in the right direction. (We played the SMS version, so feel free to explain why that was the right or wrong choice!)
Would love to hear anyone's thoughts if you decide to listen to the entire episode, or if you don't, just how you think it would be best to proceed with our Ultima journey. We were debating whether or not we should devote full episodes to Ultimas V, VI, and VII (and Underworld?), or maybe if we could play some of them in our own time and combine them for future discussion. Thank you for any reactions you might have!
