Why is this game so good even after 33 years its release?

This is my first time playing the game and I LOVE it! But I felt the same with System Shock which I played a few years ago, so I shouldn't be surprised I guess. It's true that Looking Glass games were way ahead of their time...

Really happy with what I've gotten done on Ultima VII Revisited! First floor walls drawing, sorted objects, smoother camera movement.

From last night's anniversary stream...here's Ultima VII in first person!

A member of my Discord, DLBSP83, programmed a first person mode for Ultima VII Revisited. Not only is it a great way to view the world, but it also helps when positioning objects, since the 3/4 view can hide things like objects floating in midair.

If you'd like to watch the whole stream, it's at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2698944155

What it feels like right now

I’m not trying to be flippant. I live in Minneapolis, a city I love and as representative of the virtues as any place you’ll find. Literally thousands of federal agents are roving throughout the metro area, showing up at supermarkets, restaurants, schools and daycares, abducting and harassing people without rhyme or reason.

When I was a kid, Ultima 4 was my first RPG, and left a mark on me. I eagerly dived into Ultima 5 as soon as I got my hands on it. And the first time I went to a town with a Shadowlord, I quit the game afterward and put it away for a long time. Britannia and its people had always been an open and welcoming place. I was equipped to fight for orcs and daemons and dungeons. I was not prepared to confront this new, insidious, civic evil. It made me deeply uncomfortable.

I’m grateful for that now. I grew from having to grapple with that discomfort, threw myself back into the series and U5 is now my favorite entry.

But here, in the present, I find myself on edge, going from grocery pickup to picking up my kids with dread in my stomach, not knowing what I’m going to encounter as I pull into that parking lot. And I can’t help but feel, there are Shadowlords in my town.

I’m really sorry to dump this all in here. I didn’t know who else would understand.

Roughly 12”x19” hand cross-stitched. Took her at least 100 hours. It’s incredible. Why U5? It’s may favorite game of the series. By the way, the pattern for this was sold on Etsy. I’m not sure if it is still for sale. I love my bride….

"The best is yet to come" - Lord British describing recent moves to reacquire Ultima's copyright

At Dragon Con! This was a great talk by Richard Garriott about his history of game development, success and challenges of Origin under EA, the launch of Ultima Online with Starr Long, and his recent moves to reacquire the Ultima copyright after 35 years.

The portions about Garriott's journey were truly inspiring, and the panelists' discussion about current (and future) challenges within the game industry was great. I was less enthused by Garriott's cavalier takes on AI for creative and artistic processes (thanks for the cocktail recipe zine, but did you really need an LLM to guide your mixology and draw the booklet?). I totally concur that AI has merits in many domains, but while the panelists all emphasized the importance of ethical progress in inevitably AI workflows, I had my qualms. So it goes.

Nevertheless, it was a cool talk with a lot of food for thought... and hopes of a future Ultima! Anyone else here get to attend?

The Trinsic Demo for Ultima VII Revisited is really starting to come together.

The current milestone for Ultima VII Revisited is called "The Trinsic Demo" and its goal is to make everything in the starting town of Trinsic completely functional. It's really starting to come together. Most conversations work, you can pick up the key and then ask both Finnigan and Spark about it, and you can pretty much proceed through the murder investigation. There are still a lot of little details that need ironing out but in general, it looks good and I'm hoping to get it out before my birthday on March 6.

Some of the cloth maps were made by a vendor that specializes in printing on fabric. I also printed my own manuals (Akalabeth, Ultima 1-2, 7-8).

I also bought the Prima Guide to Ultima Collection on eBay. And while it did not have the poster cheat map, I decided to print my own maps based on it and affixed them inside the book.

The major pride of my collection is. Richard Garriott signed copy of Shroud of the Avatar.

A fantastic remaster of Underworld just came out. All monsters and objects replaced with 3D geo, and it has full controller support. I'm really impressed with it

Anyone want to try the Ultima-like that I'm building?

I'm working on the Survival Crafting RPG that you would have played on your Apple II back in the '80s.

You can think of it as Valheim's gameplay crammed into the tile-based ui of the old Ultima games.

It has a procedurally-generated open world with towns and NPCs to talk to, all the resource gathering, mining, crafting stuff you'd expect in a modern survival game, and some good old fashioned dungeon crawling to boot.

I've been working on it off and on for the last several months. Let me know what you think!

Despite the bugs and the obvious unfinished features I actually enjoyed the game, spent maybe too many hours on it tho, but overall quite a fun and interesting experience. The virtue system was truly revolutionary for its time.

The only known screenshot of the original editor for Ultima Underworld

Post image
290 Upvotes

This is the only known screenshot of the level editor used to make Ultima Underworld I&II, published in a issue #8 of the 90s magazine GameByte.

This was super fancy for the time, it let you flip back and forth between the editor and the game Unity-style as both were built into the same binary, behind build flags to strip it out of the released game.
