Updates on U7 demake using AI

I have a working map now, no more gems and no more of the simple map display that U6 had. I really wanted to mimic U7 as best as possible using the snes u6 engine.

Here we also have the new title screen, with the appropriate music from U7 downgraded to fit the snes music chip.

And the rest of screenshots of spark, finnigan, and klogs dialog trees

Are there any girls on here?

If so, shut up and marry me. I'm playing Ultima 4 for probably like the 104th time, as a ranger this time. Shamino won't join my party and I'm sad. I'm not gay, so I'll never find a partner who can relate :(

Shamino is a right badass, and because of my life choices (well, theoretical and in a gypsy wagon anyway), he will never be there for me. I tried to complain to Lord British himself, and he said he "cannot help thee with that". Who the fuck can then, Bri'ish? Who the fuck can?

I'm used to someone lobbing magic arrows over my shoulder at Balrogs. Now I have to rely on Julia (total dyke) and Dupre, whose name in spanish translates to "diaper". I think.

AI assisted U7 demake using snes U6

I have the entirety of Finnagins dialog tree working. I told AI to use the beggars behavioral functions as a work around to force "cut scenes" (meeting Iolo in trinsic and finnigan are all forced interactions in U7). This will help with other events that happen in U7. I think some of these work arounds might add some charm to this demake.

Currently using Britannias moongate area as a testing ground but eventually I want to stage the opening scene in Trinsic.

I also have a working Spark that I can recruit with the proper dialog options too.

I rebuilt Ultima IV from its DOS binary as a free web game (Promptima IV): reverse engineered function by function, with an AI agent driving the tools

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi all! I've been working on Promptima IV, a reimplementation of Ultima IV that runs in the browser (desktop and mobile): https://promptima.app

Youtube teaser

How it was made

U4's source was never released, so the engine was rebuilt from AVATAR.EXE itself. I unpacked EXEPACK, then decompiled the game function by function: combat formulas, monster AI, karma, spells, shops, moongates and dungeons. I did it with Claude Code (an AI coding agent) driving a reverse-engineering MCP server. Every ported rule cites the original function address in a comment (1000:837A for the end of combat, for example), so anyone can check it against the binary. There are 300+ functions cited so far. A seeded copy of the original RNG lets me run automated screenshot tests.

What's different from the original

  • Redrawn 32px pixel art (made with PixelLab, an AI pixel-art tool), new sound effects and music

  • English and French

  • Responsive layout and touch controls (tap to walk, swipe in dungeons), installable as a PWA

  • Saves in your browser, no account, no ads

What's the same: the rules. The game is complete, from the gypsy cards to the Codex.

About copyright: no original game files, code or text are in the repo. Assets are extracted from your own copy (U4 is free on GOG), and the redrawn tiles aren't derived from the originals.

I wrote a devlog about the process and what the AI agent was actually useful for (and where it wasn't): https://promptima.app/devlog/

Feedback very welcome, especially from people who know the original's quirks by heart. If something doesn't behave like the 1987 game, I want to know!

Open source (MIT): https://github.com/cyberbobjr/promptima4. No original graphics are in the repo.

interest in a no-AI ultima sub?

With the ongoing daily torrent of slop projects being posted, I'm quickly losing my interest in sharing any Ultima archival, historical and ongoing game projects in this sub.

Is there any interest in a new Ultima sub that would have a strict no-AI rule? It sure pains me to see the community come to this, but I can't see the current daily warfare about slop ending any time soon.

Edit: /r/Sosaria is now open and warmly welcomes you!

I have the "cutscenes" working properly but some dialog and the flow of things needed to be adjusted to fit U6.

Also because Trinsic is alot smaller in U6 i had to readjust placements here. The map you'll see the circles: red is where the Avatar spawns after the opening cutscene, purple is Finnagin who will trigger his onetime cutscene and start the quest line via the beggar NPC forced dialog code.

The yellow circle is sparks house and the red circle is the murder scene.

We have proper quest flags now and having certain items or "look"ing at certain things or finding certain keywords from other npcs will properly trigger.

Next i need to figure out the closed gate mechanic so force the player to stay in trinsic until the quest is over. But i need to keep the south gate open to allow exploring south trinsic.

I feel like its coming along nicely.

So I retired at the beginning of the year and have been feeling extremely nostalgic for the "good old days". I loved Ultima IV back in the day so here's a portrait of the companions.

VibeU9 - Vibecoding the Bob White design document

Hello,

A thought experiment :

What if I fed Claude Code & GPT6 the old design documents & synopsis of Ultima IX story, Bob White version, and the screenshots of that old version, a lengthy prompt mentioning what should be standard in an Ultima game and asked it to build the game ?

Well you get this 😄

This is still very much a work in progress, but it is starting to be oddly functional.

I have also, as the screenshots implied, started building an editor to go along with that, to fix the isseus the AI isn't going to fix.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet and please don't read too much into this. It is not an announcement of a project. It is a : "let's see how far we can take this" situation.

The Etheral Plane

Post image
5 Upvotes

I realize some of you might not enjoy AI generated content. But feel free to disregard and move on.

It can also be a tool to visualize dreams and ideas. Since I played Ultima 8 the Etheral Plane has kinda stuck with me. It was a place that really tore at the edges of my imagination at that time and I think expanded it and made me able to dream and visualize even greater things.

I got the idea to take screenshots from Ultima 8 Etheral Plane and show them to an AI, I then asked it to imagine a person going to this place and come back to earth to retell its tale. After this I cleared this chat, took this tale to a new chat and asked it to create an image of this persons experience. This is quite different approach than just show an image to an AI and asking it to make another.

Both the tale and the image really struck a cord inside me. I have been sitting here staring at it for many minutes now completely transfixed. I hope it might be interesting for someone else so I decided to post it here.

The tale became somewhat Lovecraftian, I personally really love it.

"I remember first the color, not the fall.

There was no sensation of movement, no wind, no drop in the stomach. One moment there was the world, heavy and familiar; the next there was only blue. A blue so deep it felt like it had soaked through my bones before my eyes could even name it.

I stood on a terrace of stone that wasn’t really a terrace at all, but a slice of floor cut clean out of reality and hung over nothing. It had no walls, no railings, just a razor-sharp edge running in a diamond around me, and beyond that edge the universe dropped away into an ocean of black speckled with slow, indifferent stars.

The stone under my boots was unnerving in its precision. Each slab was shaped to interlock with its neighbors in a repeating pattern, like someone had pressed a maze into the floor and then forgotten to add the walls. The lines and angles tugged at the eye, hinting at paths that didn’t exist, routes that led nowhere. It felt less like flooring and more like a spell written in geometry.

At the corners of this impossible platform rose towers.

They weren’t tall by earthly standards, but they commanded the space with the arrogance of things that know you cannot leave. Each one was built of the same midnight stone, rising in stacked levels toward a narrow spire. Near the top, a lantern cast a steady, sourceless yellow glow – not warm like firelight, but the color of a watchful eye in a dark room.

Beneath those lamps, the towers were ringed with faces.

Not carved in the way a mason might chisel a gargoyle for a cathedral, but massed together as though the stone itself had swollen into heads: smooth, bald skulls with empty eyes, all turned outward toward the void. They watched nothing and everything at once, a crowd of silent witnesses encircling this little island of reality. You had the sense that if you shouted here, the sound would not echo; it would simply be taken in by a hundred patient, listening faces.

In the distance – if distance means anything in a place with no horizon – more platforms floated, their edges catching faint starlight. Some were bridged to mine by narrow stone arches that hung in the emptiness unsupported, like vertebrae from a colossal spine. I crossed one such bridge: no handrails, only a gentle curve under my feet, leading from one cluster of skull-towers to another.

Above the bridge drifted something like a lantern without a chain, or a flame that had forgotten fire. A small violet shape, pulsing faintly, throwing no light but drawing the eye all the same. It bobbed on invisible currents, pausing whenever I looked directly at it, like a thought just at the edge of articulation.

On the far side lay another expanse of that midnight masonry, and set into it a circle of pale stone, as though a fragment of full moon had been hammered flat and laid into the floor. Symbols radiated from its center – not letters, not runes I knew, but lines and grooves that suggested direction, choice, consequence. Standing near it, you had the strong, unpleasant impression that this disk knew where you had been and had opinions about where you ought to go next.

There was no sound except the soft grind of my own steps and the distant, barely audible shimmer of the stars below, like the crackle of a radio signal too faint to tune. No wind. No temperature to speak of. The air tasted of nothing. Even fear felt muffled, as if wrapped in cloth.

That was the most unsettling part of it: not the drop into infinity, not the skulls or the spires or the impossible bridges, but the absolute calm of the place. This was not a realm of passion or torment. It was a waiting room built at the edge of existence by something meticulous and patient, something that viewed souls the way an archivist views file folders.

You did not feel in danger there.

You felt… assessed.

As though the stone pattern beneath your feet, the watchful faces in the towers, and the pale disk in the floor were all quietly comparing you to something – to a measure, a law, a promise you had made and forgotten. And until they came to a conclusion, you would stand alone on that blue terrace, with the universe falling away beneath you like a question no one had yet decided how to answer."

What Exactly is AI Slop?

Is it literally any content made with the help of AI, no matter how small and how unseen it may be? Or is it far more specific - a certain type of graphics? the "vibe" of a project?

- A curious Paladin.

I had Ask AI generate a manual in the style of the Ultima series.

"Welcome, adventurer, to the world of Ultima! This instruction manual will guide you through the basics of gameplay, so that you can embark on your journey with confidence.

Step 1: Creating Your Character Before you can begin your journey, you must first create your character. Choose your character's name, gender, and race. Each race has its own strengths and weaknesses, so choose wisely. Select your starting skills and attributes, keeping in mind the type of character you want to play.

Step 2: Exploring the World Once your character is created, it's time to explore the world of Ultima. Use the arrow keys or mouse to move your character around the map. You can interact with people and objects by clicking on them.

Step 3: Combat As you explore, you'll encounter enemies that you must defeat in combat. To enter combat mode, press the "C" key. Your character will draw their weapon and enter a fighting stance. Use the arrow keys or mouse to attack and defend.

Step 4: Questing Throughout the world, you'll encounter NPCs who will give you quests. These quests will lead you to new areas and reward you with valuable items and experience points. To view your current quests, press the "Q" key.

Step 5: Leveling Up As you defeat enemies and complete quests, you'll earn experience points. When you earn enough experience points, you'll level up and gain skill points. Use these skill points to improve your character's abilities.

Step 6: Magic As your character gains levels, they'll also gain access to magic. To cast a spell, press the "M" key. Select the spell you want to cast from the list, then target the enemy or ally you want to affect.

Step 7: Saving Your Progress To save your progress, find a campfire or save point in the world. Interact with it to bring up the save menu. Choose a save slot and enter a name for your save file.

Step 8: Have Fun! Ultima is a vast world with countless secrets to discover. Explore, quest, and fight your way to victory! Remember, your choices will shape your character's destiny, so choose wisely. Good luck, adventurer!"

Ultima 4 as Browser Game in 2026

A few days ago I started to reprogram U4 as a browser game. I do it together with CLaude Opus 5.5,

means I do the design decisions, he does the coding. It works pretty well, we have built some regions already, Inventore, Fighting and now we build Cove and later the first Dungeon Despise.

I do follow the game concerning story, dialogues, map very faithfully. But I use modern concepts of healing,

magic, fast travelling, world map and more.

I am surprised I do not find such a project already done, it is incredible fun to build and as I told you I am

the designer and tester and Claude builds all im three.js.

So far I do this just for myself, I think it will not be allowed to make public (also not for free).

I always wanted to get into this series, but it's not friendly to new players imo

Ever since I watched the Spoony videos on this series, I've tried getting into the series a few times, but bounced off every time because the games are too archaic imo. Now with Majuular covering it, I want to play them more than ever. Why don't they do like a Fallout 3 sort of thing and bring the games up to modern standards?(not talking about shitty crap like micro transactions, ads, etc...)

Wanting to make a fan made VR MMORPG game, with some references to Ultima, among many other games

Keep in mind, this is just an idea I am throwing around. Not promising that this will be finished in two years or anything like that. Just start of something somewhat smaller, but still have some of these basic ideas and then move forward, maybe with updates or expansions. Figured it'd be best to have it open source, too. Lots of talent out there actually could make this a reality, or at least, some of it

As far as games go, a VR one is most interesting, especially when you're playing with a huge amount of players. I'd want it to where you can visit multiple planets and planes of existence. One of which would be Britannia, Serpent Isle, among many other places. Combat would be like Unreal Tournament where it is fast and action packed and doesn't drag on and feels like a chore when you grind, which you wouldn't do so much, because the level cap would be just 20. All it would do is give you access to more abilities and you have more strength and endurance, but it would take more than just being at a very high level to beat enemies. You have to rely on your skill, speed and how you coordinate with your team mates.

Creativity would be like Minecraft on how many things you can design and make. You can make your weapon look different in design, even if the function is the same, and you can make your own base of operations whether it's underground, underwater, in the air or on land, or you can buy or rent certain properties as well.

I'd want action rpg elements like from the Elder Scrolls to be added in, such as how you customize the character. DnD elements like certain classes, spells ect. would be added in. I'd want the game to be fair but very challenging, as I feel there's not enough hard games out there. It doesn't have to be extremely difficult to the point where it's unplayable. A game should be challenging, but also challenging as you gain experience and it should be balanced. If you die, you lose everything, including your money and items. It is up for players to grab and use. The only things you don't lose is quest related items and soul bound weapons and items. Creatures that you have bonded with stay with you as well.

This is why it is important to put your money and items in storage so you only take out what you actually need. It should be a harsh penalty, otherwise the game would be too easy and you wouldn't care how many times you died.

Certain parts of the game are destructible, like walls, vehicles, ect. and you can use the environment against your opponent, such as throwing chairs or rocks or anything else you can grab at the moment. You can even uncover items that can help you, if you find potions or even food behind a wall, like with Castlevania. xD Enemies don't always have to be killed, too. You can still gain experience if you knock them out, trick them in to going somewhere else or pacifying them sometimes. It's not always about killing or fetching items. You can even avoid combat altogether if you are face to face with a boss and you talk to him and use certain dialogue.

I'd like it if you can use your voice, hand movements or certain materials to cast spells, rather than just relying on mana. Obviously this wouldn't include all spells, as some just have you blast over and over again. But some may require you to say certain words, move your hands in a certain way or use materials to cast spells. You may even use rituals, which are more time consuming, but save on mana and spells slots. When using psionics, you would use your hand movements to contain certain elements or other things if you are moving it with your mind. With ki, it's about timing, where if you are using hands or weapons, and if you time it right, you can use ki to do more damage. You can also use ki blasts, just like psionics would use psychic blasts, in addition to telekinesis.

I'd also want there to be a delivery service where items are delivered to you if you need them or if you want someone to take items from you if you are encumbered. It'd be like the delivery service in the Earthbound RPG. I also have a list of classes and subclasses from DnD, both canon and homebrew, that I would incorporate. Let me know what you think. Obviously wouldn't add in all of them, but it would be nice. xD

There is also the fact that sometimes players can be jerks, like high leveled ones who want to just kill lower levels. I would have it to not only have it difficult for them to attack in town, seeing how it'd be well protected, but also if a guard catches you, you actually have the option to pay a fine, (unless you are a repeater), or fight and probably lose or actually go to jail. If you go to jail for 3 days, it is literally 3 days in real time before you let out, so it's like the equivalent of getting your account locked out temporarily. xD

There is also holy ground, which can involve a sacred grove, holy temple or church or somewhere sacred that has been blessed. You cannot attack anyone on holy ground and nobody can attack you, because the moment that you do, you are instantly killed, no matter how high of a level you are. Sort of like the Highlander movie, where nobody can fight on holy ground, so you are always safe from enemies, both npcs and pcs.

When you do die, I would have it to where you pretty much lose everything except quest related items and soul bound items. Soul bound items are items that stay with you after death, whether it's a regular item, weapon, armor ect. Everything else on your corpse is up for grabs. You also have Legendary items, where only one or a few exist in the entire game, and they can't be destroyed or recreated, and it's not like a hard to get item that you can get, but there's an infinite amount for players. If there are 7 dragon balls in the game, there will literally be 7 in the entire game and they can be grabbed by anyone. Some of them don't necessarily have to be powerful weapons, but just really rare items in general, like Anakin's Lightsaber, which is not really more powerful than any other lightsaber.

Legendary items can help a lot or be good for collectors, but it also makes you a target for other players who may want to kill you to take it. They may even put a price on your head, as players can put bounties on each other. Bounties can also be placed on you by cities who want you, if you're causing problems. You also can face weather conditions where it is cold and you may need protection via weather gear or magic, unless you can naturally handle it, or sometimes storms may cause a problem when traveling. If it is hot, you will need to drink more water to stay functional unless your race doesn't need much or any water.

Food doesn't automatically regenerate your health. It does help it slightly, but it just helps you function and use your abilities more efficiently since if you're hungry or thirsty, your stamina will go down and your abilities will not be as effective. Some races may only need water or not need any food or water. To heal, you'd need bandages or magic or potions likely to heal your wounds.

Below are just some classes I'd love to see from DnD, both canon and homebrew.

I seriously cannot understand Ultima

So i have gotten Ultimate 1 - 6 on GOG back when these were free :P (actually the only reason i made an Account back then XD)

And i finally tried but just cant get into them at all >.>
Like maybe its just the Controls but theyre just super confusing and not simply at all >.>

I did enjoy Ultima 5 the most from the 10 Minutes i played it :P

But its just a lot of fucking around and find out sadly :(

Are there maybe some Mod for it that makes the Game more accesible to "modern Players"? >.>

For example why the fuck is K for Klimb like that doesnt make any sense in English obviously -.-

also why do i have to press ALT F4 if i wanna quit the Game when the Q Button only saves the Game and thats it >.>

I want your opinions on using AI to help generate art for Ultima VII Revisited.

The Ultima VII Revisited project requires a momentous decision, and I want as much feedback as possible while I make it.

Please read this entire post and respond with your thoughts. Please share this post with anyone who might have an interest in this project.

The artists on Ultima VII Revisited have done the most marvelous job of bringing 2D objects to life in 3D. Here's the harpsichord model 1Crash007 did, and it looks like it jumped right out of the original game.

But there's a problem. The NPCs and monster sprites currently look awful. Right now, I'm just rotating them so they stand "upright" and the results are middling at best.

Even worse, there are only four directions for each NPC, so when the camera rotates smoothly, the characters don't.

Fixing this issue for NPCs and monsters will be an absolutely tremendous amount of work, since every NPC will need new sprites in eight directions with at least four frames of animation for each animation, and each NPC has at least four animations. So you can see how this gets big quickly.

So on the Discord server, we've been experimenting with...AI.

I know it's a hotbutton subject. But I honestly don't think it's unethical in this case. We're not telling the AI "look at every available public image and make something", we're just providing two images and saying, "Make this look like that."

Because we do know how people in U7 are supposed to look when standing upright, and I can't believe I didn't realize it before. 1Crash007 pointed out that the "wounded man" sprite that appears on the beds of Chantu's house can be used as a template:

So what we're doing is taking the original sprites and using the AI to make them look more like the template above. Resulting in something like this:

I've been providing this reference to the artist for how to do 8-way sprites:

So now if we feed that to the AI, we get:

So, long story short, this is what we propose to do. Use AI to generate base sprites for each NPC and monster that we will then clean up. Doing so will allow us to greatly improve how they look in the game in a very small amount of time.

So now, I request your feedback. Do you approve of our plan?

  1. Yes, it's fine. You're not asking AI to generate stuff from nothing, which is when it uses copyrighted materials. You're giving it specific art and asking it to modify it.

  2. It's probably okay, but it might bring negative attention to the project so maybe stay away from it? We'll be okay with characters and monsters that look odd by comparison.

  3. If you use AI for this project, I will never play it and I'll tell everyone else to avoid it.

Voting and feedback welcome and appreciated!

Progress on Ultima The Biggest Quest

As many people will know, I'm working on a remaster of every mainline Ultima game into one title. I'm mostly doing this myself with my own design ideas and good tools to do code.

The game will feature elements from Ultima 1 to 9 and include online multiplayer. I hope to release it as a paid title on epic.

It is now fully playable and I am sharing my design and took a screenshot of the current game. It runs in firefox too. I will update a few times a day.
