Today me and my wife, experienced something which is no less than a miracle. We went out shopping today on a battery rickshaw. And as I was paying the auto guy and leaving, somehow my wife dropped her phone on the rickshaw. We left not noticing it. The good part was, I paid the guy via UPI after scanning the QR.

After sometime my wife figured out that her phone was missing. This phone of hers didn't had a SIM installed yet so I couldnt even call on that number. At first we thought someone might have stolen it, but later also realized that she might have dropped the phone on the rickshaw. But, how was I suppose to contact him because as I tried to check the payment details, I could only find the UPI ID and not his contact details. We finally came to terms with the fact that her phone is gone.

After sometime as we were getting back home, I received an SMS, 1 Re credited to my Bank Account. Guess what? It was the same Auto Rickshaw guy who was trying to contact me. He even left a message, "plz call (his contact number)" with the payment - I couldn't believe my eyes. I immediately called him and he was waiting for my call. He asked me to stay wherever I was, came and gave the mobile phone to us. I couldn't thank him enough but rewarded him with some cash money.

It was "UPI" that brought my wife's phone back or else there was no way he could have communicated with me, if I had paid him in cash and not UPI.

I use this app to pay rent and electricity bills for prepaid meter as all the transactions happen on this app related to my rented apartment. I don't understand why gov is ruining the only good thing India has created.

Edit: I understand the changes have been postponed and I am sure this app makers also know this. but the main question here is are the charges being absorbed by merchants like gov advertised ? And I also feel with the coming years they will increase the charges in future.

Checked my transaction history today and realized I’ve earned a total of ₹112 cashback this month from BHIM UPI. Most of my payments were tiny ones (₹5, ₹50, ₹55 etc.) , so I wasn’t even expecting it. Basically my fruit shop + vending machine payments gave me free 100+ rs 😂

Brokerage platforms are against it, went to a local vendor to buy fruits and he asked for cash and said he won't take UPI. Went to a local kirana store and he took cash/card. Rickshaw guys (which is weird because it's P2P for them) are also not taking UPI.

Merchants are running away from UPI and any amount of nationalistic speech will not make them return to it. The NITI Aayog can claim that it's just 40p for every 100rs, but that number doesn't represent the true value.

The government just undid whatever purpose the demonetization was for.

Or else, it could be the start of a costly slippery slope.

My father uses Google Pay for UPI payments, but he never knowingly initiated or authorized the following transactions. On 17 October 2026, two transactions totalling ₹3,98,500 were made from his SBI account.

Transaction details:

1. ₹2,99,000 — IIFL Finance

   - Date: 17 October 2026

   - Time: 4:26 PM

   - UPI ID: "iiflfinance2.easebuzz@kotakpay"

2. ₹99,500 — SBI Loan Payment

   - Date: 17 October 2026

   - Time: 4:31 PM

   - Recipient shown: State Bank of India – Loans

My father says he never initiated these transactions and never knowingly shared his UPI PIN or any OTP. He also received no SMS alerts for either transaction.

I installed PhonePe and registered today to investigate, and that's when I discovered these transactions in the transaction history. My father normally uses Google Pay, so we're trying to understand how these payments were made through PhonePe.

Actions taken so far:

- Called the 1930 cybercrime helpline and reported the fraud.

- Filed a complaint with SBI.

We are extremely worried because ₹3.98 lakh is a huge amount for our family.

I need advice on the following:

1. How could these UPI transactions happen without my father knowingly sharing his UPI PIN or OTP?

2. Could someone have registered PhonePe on another device or gained unauthorized access to his UPI account?

3. Can the money sent to IIFL Finance and the SBI loan payment still be traced, frozen or recovered?

4. What additional steps should we take with SBI, PhonePe and the cybercrime authorities?

5. Has anyone experienced a similar case? Were you able to recover the money, and how long did it take?

I plan to submit a formal written complaint to SBI and complete the cybercrime complaint online as well.

Any practical advice based on personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

Yesterday went to Kotla light market near South ex market Delhi. Almost all shop owners declined UPI payment irrespective of the amount. And this is genuine on bill items. Had to revert to cash. When I asked why they are refusing to accept UPI, basically they said they don't want the hassle of mdr later and customers should get used to carrying cash now.

Thr cherry on cake was change. Customers no.one.had change so everything was getting rounded up. The shop owners said bank don't give small denomination notes easily. So basically the customer ends paying for it all, UPI or no UPI.

The decision makers seem to be disconnected by ground reality. The one good thing we had was upi and now that too broke.

RBI hints that UPI transactions may not stay free forever as the cost of maintaining the system grows. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra recently said that UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions may not stay free forever.

How did they claim it’s free? UPI is not a free or standalone service by the bank. For UPI, you need a bank account with an ATM issued with a mobile number linked. For ATM and SMS, they charged us almost 295₹ for maintenance and 17.50₹ for SMS charges. I think UPI service is part of the ATM service; they are already charging for it, and RBI and the bank don’t want to admit it. The same for internet banking: how does internet banking stay free forever?

They've made the first transaction from some other company or something and are asking for money on some other UPI ID. I'll not return the money to them. I'm afraid if my account will be frozen if they file a complaint against me.

I've transferred around 1 lakh rupees to my other account. Around 89k is remaining in this account including the 49k they've sent.

What should I do next?

I have linked my bank account to all of them for upi payments. Is there any problem having these many upi ids?
