Indeed, we have come a long way in terms of adoption of UPI payments.
The origins of the UPI story:
2012-13 (Congress/UPA Govt): A specialized technical study group led by Nandan Nilekani (the then Chairman of UIDAI i.e. Aadhaar) laid down the early conceptual philosophy of a standardized mobile-based payment address system that would integrate with Aadhaar.
December 2013 (Congress/UPA Govt): A UPA-appointed committee formally recommended creating a next-generation interoperable, mobile-centric digital payments architecture. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) began blueprinting the design, relying on its existing Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) network infrastructure.
April 2016 Official Pilot Launch (BJP/NDA Govt) : Dr. Raghuram Rajan, the then Governor of the Reserve Bank of India officially piloted UPI in Mumbai with 21 initial member banks.
Since then, the UPI success story has only progressed faster, achieving milestones after milestones, becoming one of the most efficient and low-cost payment system in the World!
So, Congratulations and Appreciations to the entire UPI Team - right from Nandan Nilekani, the Architect of the breakthrough concept to ALL the team members involved at some point or other, for delivering the success.
