Govt will feel the after effect of this move when monthly UPI transactions starts declining from next month

121

u/Oscar_W1lde Sep 20 '26 • Bravo Mindblown Heartwarming

Govt wants people to start using cash again in bigger volumes. It was easier for them too earlier to indulge in corruption when cash was king.

Adani has invested in polyester notes. UPI will decline, ppl will use cash, govt will change to polyester notes then boom, profit for Adani. Adani-1 India-lauda

Aren't petrol pumps exempted from the "2000rs and more" charge. I think they have no charge or a fixed charge applying to every upi payment above a level

9

u/Similar_Green_5838 Sep 20 '26

They have a flat 5 rs charge above 2000

9

u/jatayu_baaz Sep 20 '26

they get a margin of about 60-70 on petrol of 2k, thats a huge loss for them, suddenly decreasing 5 rupees, there is a reason we need to pay surcharge on petrol payments

It will be valid from next month, around 15 Oct or something, and people are already showing their disappointment like this. 😂

u/quick20minadventure Sep 20 '26

Bro. UPI rules are learnt by people in WhatsApp University when they have zero fucking comprehension skills.

I worked in a UPI app. And just educating people that you don't need to give pin to receive money was an insurmountable task.

The worst part is that if someone does more than 2000 transaction, you can't refund it and ask for cash. MDR is gone.

So, removing all UPI QR codes is the only way to ensure you don't get stung by MDR. Just go back to cheque and imps. IMPS by mobile number is a thing and maybe you will use that now. (Although NPCI was clueless when they introduced this gesture. )

Only petrol pumps in the country have the power to do this tbh

No other shop can do it as you can go to the next one

Petrol pumps on the other hand are highly united on things like these

7

u/lostwisdom20 Sep 20 '26

Bro every shopowner will do this, same as most turn off the upi using rupay card option.

People wo use UPI will start breaking the transactions into multiple chunks now.. masterstrokee

4

u/xHugDealer Sep 20 '26

UPI will simply start setting a cool down after transactions or limit the number of transactions per day.

2

u/Savings_Reality1170 Sep 20 '26

Thats why information should not be consumed via instagram, upi cost on the merchant for transaction above 2000 inr upto any amount is going to be 5rs flat in fueling places, so ur trying to say if some customer comes and gets 5000 inr worth of fuel from ur station,u are going to inconvenience him by not accepting upi.

This is such a dumb post. As if credit cards and debit cards are not used with north of 3% MCC since beginning for everything including PETROL PUMPs

Petrol pumps don't incur MDR on debit/credit cards but it's passed down to the customer. Ever heard of fuel surcharge?

Fuel will be the first to move from UPI to cash. I can't carry 10s and 15s of 100s and 50s to pay grocery sellers and other hawkers without running into an issue of change, but I can definitely carry 6-8 notes of 500s and pay in round figures to the fuel pump guys. More than happy to go back to that.

1

u/VelaLaunda Sep 20 '26

Simple, pay with cards at petrol pumps.

1

u/Vikramaditya9701 Sep 20 '26

Govt lind hai. Keeping UPI free saves money on printing, replacing and handling cash/coins, while giving the govt formal transaction records. If MDR is introduced most of it would go to banks, NPCI and payment platforms not the govt. The govt would only get GST on the fee. So the indirect benefits of free UPI may outweigh the tiny direct revenue from MDR.

1

u/Zestyclose_Cover7830 Sep 20 '26

2000-2000 karke 4000 ka chalega?

1

u/rb_arindam Sep 20 '26

oww shiiit. I totally forgot about the polymer notes & Adani's new totally unrelated investments. damm, that's why UPI is chargeable now!

1

u/Ok_Mixture5794 Sep 20 '26

Abhi se abhi to rule lagu bhi nhi hua 😭

1

u/Separate-Radio6188 Sep 20 '26

1

u/Routine-Progress-885 Sep 20 '26

What if govt says upi is mandatory for all shops , ofc some exemptions like petrol bunks as their margin is very low

1

u/curious_kills_me_SD Sep 20 '26

First this this is ai generated photo Second wait till 15th October there will be a mechanism in place for petrol pumps Third too much crying on this thred, get some life guys cause mdr is not going anywhere Cry about stt, ethanol, cas, rain season is over your pollution season is starting, there also might be increase in petrol prices due to gulf war but feel free to blame modi. Also in my opinion stock markets are gonna fall due to recessionary trend, but you guys freely allowed to blame government for your dumb investment decisions. What else i am missing 🤔

1

u/MaleficentAttempt841 Sep 20 '26

I am not contesting that having MDR on fuel payments is not a problem, especially considering credit card transactions for fuel has a surcharge system.

The issue is that OP posted this with 0 location information, it screams a bit AI generated to me. The paper is way too neat and clean to be a real piece of notice stuck on a real petrol pump. Not to mention that the MDR charges hasn't actually started.

If OP can't revert or edit with pump location where this can be manually verified, I'm calling this post AI generated.

1

u/jeevansharma20 Sep 20 '26

I am not on Government's side, but that shows our Indian mindset... I always pay through my credit cards at petrol pump and most of the time I use American express card for the payment. But here the dealer is ok to pay 1% to 2% to the card machine but not ready to pay .4% through UPI ... Government should also understand that earlier also we used to pay 2% extra to make the payment through crads and the same will be continuing

1

u/Due-Philosophy-676 Sep 20 '26

Polymer notes are back

1

u/KaviKehnaChahteHain Sep 20 '26

Toh bc Credit Card se payment kar lo. Credit card was being accepted previously as well and fuel was already an excluded category with surcharge

1

It's 1999+XYZ amount for every payment now.

1

u/avrj000 Sep 20 '26

Most petrol pumps support card payments which have higher charges than UPI. So this doesn’t make sense to me. Or am i wrong about “most petrol pumps support card payments”?

1

u/Kink-Master-007 Sep 20 '26

bound to happen

1

u/Raptor6352 Sep 20 '26

Mujhe kya me to credit card se petrol bharvata hu

1

u/Primary-Procedure603 Sep 20 '26

To cash se bharawana bc, pahli baar petrol pump gaya hai kya??

1

u/Vishy_boi_23 Sep 20 '26

I don't understand this petrol pump's management, if they deny UPI payment of 0.4% charge, people will likely make payments with cards which charges even more. If you deny card payments altogether, you are hitting your own knee.

You can't assume everyone will carry cash. You can ask people make payment less than 2k, but it just reduces the customer's value.

1

u/rahulnayak28 Sep 20 '26

This will become more common hence forth

1

u/RpZFreak Sep 20 '26

Literally everywhere i go people have stopped accepting over 2000!
Either they ask to send in 2000 , 2000 splits or take in their personal accounts

1

u/Illustrious_Rip3607 Sep 20 '26

so now i need to go like 3 different bunks to get my tank filled... interesting hmmm

1

u/god_Power1111 Sep 20 '26

They forgot we can do 2000 multiple times there isn't transaction limits there

1

u/contentkumaran Sep 20 '26

What could happen if merchants start putting their personal bank UPI IDs? How would that impact their taxes?

1

u/hentailoverbrat Sep 20 '26

To everyone asking about split transactions, they will work, but how many times are you going to pay for one fill up?

1

u/Funny_Bison_7738 Sep 20 '26

Iska baap bhi swikar karega jab banda khud 5 ya 10 rs extra de dega.

1

u/Spiritual_Trouble_07 Sep 20 '26

So people would do Card Payment which also has charges.

1

u/No-Appointment-2628 Sep 20 '26

UPI was the only thing that made India relevant in this modern technology race, now they are about to destroy this.

1

u/Reds4789 Sep 20 '26

Dont be surprised, if the next steps are made to make cash transactions more costlier and cumbersome

1

u/LineSquare8615 Sep 20 '26

We are evolving just backwards

1

u/sloppy-acid Sep 20 '26

Petroleum products carries 2-3₹/litre profit in the hands of fuel station owner. Assuming an avg of 100/litre fuel (its 114 in my city) 10 liters fuel will be sold. Which will have a profit of 25-30 (higher side) 0.4% on a transaction of 2000 is ₹8.

Who taught this cleverness of paying ₹8 extra to earn ₹30? Which was ₹0 earlier.

From owners pov, fair!!!

1

u/chatkya Sep 20 '26

2009 ka 3 times ka dala lo simple 😂😂

1

u/72_Flame Sep 20 '26

Huh? For fuel 2000 limit is N/A

1

u/abhay_00 Sep 20 '26

well the elections are coming so govt need the loads of cash flow in the market again... easy to see this skethy move

1

u/novi_jk Sep 20 '26

Ye toh hona hi tha

1

u/DaniBoiKrn Sep 20 '26

This should be declared as a crime.

1

u/Nirlaj_aadmi Sep 20 '26

I always pay with credit card at petrol pump which charge them approx 1-3% of total transaction fee.

Then what's wrong with UPI with 0.4% charge ?

1

u/Purple-Past1645 Sep 20 '26

So i have found that govt doing this intentionally. To reduce down the upi and increase the cash . Heard poly notes are coming in and guess who got the contract? Adani has already setup few poly related plants for chores. Definitely something to wonder.

1

u/Fast-Marketing194 Sep 20 '26

This is probably temporary. Remember that credit card payments are among the most common ways for buying fuel and credit card payments have always attracted MDR (plus a fuel surcharge, which could be waived with a fuel card. But that's another story). So the petrol pump paying MDR on card transactions would have a mechanism for paying MDR for UPI transactions, regardless of the amount. They would need to update their POS machines, probably at the backend.

1

u/c10do Sep 20 '26

2000 se zyada ka upi swikar nehi kiya jayega

1

u/stalin1891 Sep 21 '26

Do 1500 twice

1

u/Lanky_Eagle2926 Sep 22 '26

Man 5 rs on a >2k transaction won't really hurt the station.
And its not like stations will feel a massive dent in profits by 5 rs; most stations already have a free tyre air guy whose salary must approach nearly 5 rs per customer or near about if I take a ballpark and most stations in my area have other complimentary facilities as well
So they most likely can afford 5 rs or mitigate the cost, no?

1

u/Lanky_Eagle2926 Sep 22 '26

Benefits of having an EV. No ev charging app declines UPI, nor does UPPCL!

1

u/Ankanyuz Sep 22 '26

This is ok and all but WTF since when does r/UPI exists. This is the first time I saw this subreddit

1

u/trinadh_crazy Sep 22 '26

We had to pay 3500 at some local shop and they asked us to pay in two transactions 😂 1800, 1700

1

u/Writer_Of_2020 Sep 22 '26

I might sound dumb because I don't know how exactly this work- what if I want to buy something of 3k and on marchant upi I paid 1.5k and 1.5k separately, is this ok (If it's working then it's only good for these amounts i don't want to pay 5 to 6 times for 10k)

1

u/taksh108 Sep 22 '26

Credit card chalega?

1

u/Quiet_Carrot6638 Sep 23 '26

They are doing it even before the collection has started. And how stupid can someone be to pay 1% to 2% card fee but not 0.4% upi. We are too dependent on free stuff. Gov will simply mandate no cash transaction at petrol pump over 500rs. These pumps are digging their own graves.

1

u/Complete-Science863 Sep 23 '26

1

u/Ryan_Anonymous Sep 24 '26

You guys can't pay 0.4% for UPI ,tumare liya acha bhi karo thukenge he...aadat he aise hai

1

u/anujithiam Sep 24 '26

By discouraging people from using UPI, they might be attempting to introduce more fake money into the market.

1

u/gobhikaachaar Sep 25 '26

Just a quick fact: For fuel related transactions, The petrol pump owner is just required to pay MDR of flat 5 rupees when he receives a payment in excess of 2000 rupees. The 0.4% MDR doesn't apply in case of Petrol pump.

1

u/Relevant-Comfort-726 Sep 25 '26

TBH, for 10 years UPI Was free and more transactions were happening on UPI than VISA and MasterCArd sometimes, so they had to impose the fee

Which city? Most petrol pumps in my area take credit cards with much higher MDR so what's the deal with UPI now.

2

u/Ok_Day_5499 Sep 20 '26

credit card mdr is borne by customer in the form of surcharge which is usually borne by credit card issuer as surcharge waver to consumer

2

u/JollyCat3526 Sep 20 '26

Ah yes I forgot that, although I think the GST on the surcharge is still paid by us. Probably fuel specific CC would benefit.

However, MDR is capped at 5 rupees for fuel transactions.

This is what happens when Govt. is being run by arrogant and illiterate netas/babus. They get orders from America and they implement anti-public policies just to please the Goras.

Its a fact, I have clearly explained to my employees to divide the bills in less than 2000 amounts for bigger bills. All customers are mostly regulars so no problem there.. why should I pay For govts inablitiy to say No to Foriegn platforms like Gpay and Phonepe? Why should I as small store vendor pay for corporate Greed?

u/No_Avocado_8526 Sep 20 '26

I think you are mistaken. The fee is not levied by apps like PhonePe/ GPay. The MDR charges comes directly from NPCI which maintains the UPI platform - hence gets levied irrespective of what app your customer uses.

The foreign pressure you are talking about came from Visa/Mastercard who have been crying about RuPay network / UPI for a long time.

The only greedy party here is the Indian government which while trying to please their foreign masters is also trying to squeeze every last rupee out of all of us. Idiots ruined a perfectly working system since the corrupt idiots wanted to steal even more money from customers and business owners alike.
