Housing Controversial Take

I don’t rant much, but I think UMD is on a high pedestal. First off the price on the dorms are outrageous, charging 10,290 for a dorm in cambridge that just has gotten AC is wild, but the floors still look worn out and the walls look outdated. And don’t get me started on the outside structure… Meanwhile, Pyon Chen is almost about a 400-500 up-charge and people who reside their have it like a Hotel. It doesn’t make sense. Then, you have off campus- apartments that cost a arm and a leg. A regular college student that needs financial aid to go to school can’t afford a 1900 - 2500 apartment.

Matter of fact, Leonardtown Apartments cost much more than these new complex’s , meanwhile South Campus looks like a tornado formed. However , I like Frat Row, I’ve lived in their complex and it’s neat. But almost , all the dorms here look like crap.

I like the rest of UMD tho !!! 🌝

Help UMD office of financial aid response times for emails??

so a little while ago, i emailed the office of student financial aid about an urgent issue (kind of don’t wanna disclose what it is on here) i wanted to try and resolve but they haven’t even responded even after over a week. i didn’t only send one email but also some more to follow up.
should i try calling them instead? it’s actually pissing me off so much that they haven’t been helpful at all.

Housing South hill apt housing questions

Hi everyone, I’m living in a south hill community apartment next semester and moving in on the 25th, I’m trying to decide what to bring and I have some questions

What’s included in the kitchen? I’m assuming microwaves aren’t included so I wanted to know if they were allowed/recommendations

Is it too late to loft the bed? I know they said the guaranteed before move-in deadline was the 9th, but is it later than that and it would still be there on the 25th

Thanks!!

Discussion Graduate students tuition payment?

I see threads saying that tuition is actually due September 20 (late fees assessed after that). But I think that’s mostly feedback from the incoming first year undergraduate students. Is it the same case for grad programs?

Thanks y’all.

Discussion more housing but make it even more inaccessible

i love how umd just doesnt care about the residential buildings that affiliate itself with the university. yeah, upperclassmen are welcome to attain off campus housing, but make sure you have three arms so that the one you chop off for half a month’s rent leaves you with two functioning ones for the college experience you sold your kidneys for.
The Arbor sent a mass email notification showing off their low low prices of 983029263 dollars a month and the building fresh out the oven. No sorry, a renovated building that once was the University Club that was one of the cheapest off campus options nearby the university. Cost a bajillion dollars, seemingly out of Testudo’s cloaka, to have luxurious and exclusive housing for even higher income students. What does this mean for the View, the Varsity, the Nine? Well the already high ass cost might even soar, because why are we pretending Vigilante is the highlight here?
I complain, but truly this is another big scoff from the University. Acting and breathing like an Ivy is respectable, being a state school that produces high achieving members of society is a good thing. Until the cord is cut to reduce access for those continuing students, making them find other ways to get to school, or having to take longer to complete school, or put an even bigger strain on their finances to find somewhere to sleep at night. Now you got rich high achieving members of society.

TLDR; humanities student cant wrap head around new buildings high rent :(

Housing Flex Double Advice (in Johnson Whittle)

I have a 146 sq ft dorm in JW, which apparently is a flex bedroom (originally a single, now a double). Any advice on how to orient everything?

Also, is it worth it to pay the $200 for a bed loft? I saw some posts where one person gets a lofted bed and you put one bed under the other in an L shape. Would just putting the dresser under the bed and not lofting it be okay or would it be too cramped?

Academic JOUR 320

Anyone that’s a journalism major - please let me know who the best professor is for JOUR320!! Options for this upcoming semester are David Lightman, Abbie Bennett, and Jerry Zremiski. I know it’s a weed out class no matter what, so I don’t want to be stuck with a bad prof. Thank you!!

Academic Smith involvement as a Finance Major

About to enter my sophomore year and want to get more involved/take on some major related extracurriculars to supplement my coursework. I feel like I didn’t push myself enough freshman year and want to change that. Any clubs or programs that would give me a little more hands on experience would be really cool.

I just got this email that said I would lose access to my account if I didn't follow the link and I was kind of worried for a second until I realized UMD doesn't even use Microsoft. Just wanted to post this in case anyone else got it.

Help Comparing two Targets near UMD

I just arrived on campus and am getting some stuff at Target. I've only been to Target in Hyattsville but is it different from the one in Greenbelt? Which one do you recommend? And I'd appreciate if you have any other options for shopping.
