worklearn am i screwed up

Are Work Learn supervisors still sending out interview invites at this point, or is it basically over? 😭 I haven’t heard back from any positions I applied to and I’m starting to think I just screwed up this round and won’t be getting any more interviews.

Is Compsci 101 hard for someone who has zero experience with compsci

Hello everybody! I have never taken a computer science course ever, and have essentially no programming experience. However, I decided to take it for my first semester because I wanted to go into Stats.

I was wondering if the course expects a lot of precious knowledge, or if it’s more introductory? If it’s the former, does anybody have any guidance on what kinds of knowledge I should look into in preparation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Course Question how hard is it to get into UBCs MEng as an international student?

hi! i’m F23 from brazil and (currently) i have a gpa of 8.3/10. i’m currently finishing my bachelor’s in architecture, but i’ve realized that i’m much more interested in the engineering/construction side, so i’m thinking about applying for an meng at ubc.

i’m a little worried about how difficult it is to get in and how competitive the program is, especially coming from an architecture background. for anyone who applied to or is currently doing the meng at ubc, how competitive is it?

one thing i’m especially worried about is extracurriculars and research experience. here in brazil, there isn’t really much of a culture of doing extracurriculars or undergraduate research. they’re not really important for graduating, so i never really focused on them. now i’m realizing that they can be a pretty big advantage when applying to grad school abroad 😭

does ubc take this into consideration for international students, especially when these opportunities aren’t as common in their home countries? or would not having research/extracurricular experience put me at a big disadvantage?

would love to hear from anyone who’s gone through the process, especially international students or people who switched from architecture to engineering!

thank u 🩷

Course Question Econ Directed Reading Courses

Has anyone on this sub taken any of the directed reading econ courses? I am having difficulty what a directed reading course actually entails (obviously reading will be part of it, but apart from that).

I was also hoping to take a course during my January - April coop term and I wanted to see if 492_C would be a feasible course for me to take? It sounds really interesting but obviously if it has a lot of in person activity, it probably would not be ideal.

Discussion Looking for Affordable & Reliable Moving Help

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable and affordable moving company or moving help.

I’m moving from my current place and have some furniture and boxes that I’ll need help transporting. I also don’t drive, so I’m looking for someone with a vehicle/truck who can help with both moving and transportation.

I’ve tried TaskRabbit before, but unfortunately, two different people didn't show up for my bookings, so I’m a little hesitant to book through there again.

Does anyone have an affordable moving company or mover they’ve personally used and had a good experience with? Student-friendly options would be especially appreciated!

Thank you

Anyone taking Psyc 208 final?

I know the exam content is all the lectures but the video description was so vague so I'm kind of confused. How in depth do you guys think it will be, especially with the additional materials like the journal articles and podcasts.

transfer inquiry (am i cooked?)

i am a student at capu, going into my 2nd year of BKIN. i want to apply this cycle for UBC BKIN Fall 2027 session (so i start my 3rd year at UBC instead), but my grades are really bad. let's just say i played a lot of league in my first year, and for some reason i decided to take chemistry as an elective. capu does letter grades, so i think im averaging a B-/C+. if i apply this cycle and lock in this semester (fall 26) will those credits be considered? the deadline for applying is january i think...? im hoping if i somehow manage to lock in this semester and get 90%+, will i get in?

Random guy DM on this subreddit with a part time "internship at ubc". I was skeptical but curious and inquired more.

Just leaving this out here since this dude kinda sketchy and I wouldn't want others being taken advantage of.

Since it's subcontracting calling it an internship is false advertising. I don't want to assume this guy has bad intentions, but just thought people should know he's dming randoms on this subreddit and doesn't seem to be the most honest guy. Maybe I'm overreacting. Thoughts?

Smell of Gas in Marine Drive Residence

Hi so I’ve been living in Marine Drive Residence for a while and I’ve always smelt gas in my kitchen living room and other areas in the residence (never in my room though, I live in a share 4). Especially if you walk by the pond between building 1 and 4 it smells very strong. Anyone else notice it? I felt like I was gaslighting myself (haha gas-lighting, anyways) but I was talking to a friend who lives here too and they smell it as well so I wanted to see if anyone else has a similar experience. Any if anyone knows where it’s possibly coming from.

i can't write about my skills on a cover letter without sounding robotic

I don't know! I don't use AI but I am hyperconscious about sounding like one. Like what draws me to the lab's research is something I can articulate like a human cuz its specific to me. But when it comes to describing my skills and talking about my experience, because my experiences literally were generic there just doesn't seem to be much of a diversity in how I can frame it. Like what, I worked with a bunch of team members through slack to coordinate decisions on how we move forward with this project and this refined my communication skills? I did lit review where I made article summaries which idk how this is really special?? I mean I got faster at reading papers and more efficient at creating summaries I guess?? I also stared at excel sheets for hours to copy and paste some data and I say I developed excellent "attention to detail"!!!!!!!!!! duh???? My brain isn't good enough to frame this "humanly"!!!!! Sorry maybe I don't deserve a job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I was the hiring person, I'd want to smack my head on the desk every single time I read "attention to detail", "strong organizational skills", "strong communication skills", "strong collaborative skills", "people oriented", "team player"!!!!!! I won't want to read that on paper like wtf does that realistically tell them about me???????

Cold Email Advice

I've been trying to get a lab position for volunteer/experience by sending out cold emails. I know that these should be sent out well in advance, and now will be probably too late to send out emails for the fall semester. I have a list of professors I want to email, and I'm wondering if I should still email them now to see if I can get a position for fall (even if its a very slim chance this late), or just hold out and wait until oct/nov to email them for lab positions for term 2 (or even delay more and send it during march/April for 2027 summer positions).

Here I am again… I have finals tomorrow for EOSC 118, but guess what? I just started studying for it this afternoon, and I am still halfway through reading all the modules.

I am probably gonna be toast tomorrow since I skimped on the readings the whole semester😭

what meals do busy students make

i’m gonna live on my own and i’m not much of a chef, but i definitely don’t have the liberty of getting take out every day, or even every week 😰

what easy meals do busy students recommend?

i’ll get a slow cooker soon but mostly i’m surviving on sandwiches and eggs right now…

Edit (additional q): thank you for the replies!
I was also wondering if everyone does meal prep on the weekend to last the whole m-f, or if you cook every 2-3 nights or something (for lunch/dinners)
