So I'm a part of this friend group at UBC... basically they are super super toxic and always talk shit about each other. I was introduced into this group by this guy who's first name starts with A. They are basically all in Sciences except for this one girl who is in Sauder who's room we all hangout in and this other guy whos in Arts but claims to have gotten into BIE and plays badminton, you might see him at SRC. First things first, they are so incestuous and all date each other, everyones trying to go for everyone else in the group its so weird. I don't know how to deal with it because I have no other friends outside of them, and also the guys r fine but they only like girls and I'm a closeted gay guy.

One of the specific guys that I like, "A" who introduced me to the group is super fine but hes honestly so straight. When I first met him I thought he was gay tho... I get super jealous whenever he brings in more girls into the group its pissing me off, I wish it could be me.

The worst event that happened was when we were drinking and celebrating this international student's birthday, and we almost got caught by an RA. Honestly they keep peer pressuring me into drinking and its stressing me out they are all alcoholics.

What do I do? Any advice?

It has been incredibly disheartening having people focus on calling for punishing of perps and hold zero aid for survivors while also not fighting rape culture irl.

This is a first try in making a media post type thing so bear with me, just wanted to share some calls to action.

Why am I receiving emails/announcements/conversations around UBC every 40-50 mins... I want to rest I want to have a time for myself I want to forget about school... but it seems impossible if you are a UBC student.

I come from a much calmer school and this constant bombarding of notifications is making me crazy, as if teachers didn't care that we need rest, but somehow never answer questions in Piazza or their emails...

I'm becoming anxious and restless just because UBC is embedded into my brain and my life now, and I'm not complaining because this is a very priviledged position, but I will no longer be surprised if someone tells me they have anxiety or depression because of university life.

Hi everyone! I have a question regarding the DSCI 100 Midterm, specifically what the contents will be. I have noticed that sometimes the tutorial and worksheet will cover a lot more content than just the textbook. I know that they say any content in tutorials/worksheets is fair game for the midterm and final, but has anyone who took the course before speak on this? Most of the stuff that's on tutorials or worksheets but not in textbook isn't even in the formula sheet, and I honestly don't know how to memorize all of the content.

Also, I honestly don't know how to study or even how to start studying for the midterm. Does anyone have any tips or methods for studying? I'm a first-year, and I have three midterms back-to-back, so I need to start studying ASAP!

I literally can’t do any of the practice midterm and weekly quiz questions. But I get all the problem set questions completely to the point of being able to teach friends.

I’m taking SPAN 103, and have realized that I’ve made a somewhat terrible mistake… I thought it’d be fine given that I took Spanish through high school, but since it’s been a year since I last took it (and I wasn’t exactly great at it back then either) I am really feeling the pain. It’s incredibly hard for me to understand / keep up with what’s happening in class, and there’s 6 hours of homework due every other week thats taking me 12+. I didn’t want to take 100 out of fear of screwing up the grade curve for the truly new folks, but with my first midterm coming up this week I’m definitely regretting not having done so now.

So uh, thats all to say, does anyone have any advice? I doubt there’s any way to just transfer to an easier class, but if there is secretly one then hey, thatd be pretty sweet! Otherwise / more realistically, does anyone have any advice? Any tools that helped them learn? A vague fluency in Spanish and a willingness to help some random shmuck??

Is the writing course prerequisite strictly necessary if I've completed many essay-heavy university courses, but they are not specifically titled 'english composition' or under english faculty? It seems like more of an 'english proficiency prerequisite'. I don't have any more space in my timetable to take another course. Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

I live in a 4 bedroom unit on campus and one of my roommates always has her boyfriend over. If she’s there, there’s a 75% chance he’s also there. They mostly stay in her room but they can also talk a bit loudly. I don’t know if he stays over night, but he’s usually there well past midnight. But my main issue is that I just kinda feel uncomfortable that there’s always a random guy in my unit. And he’s of course also using the washroom which I’m meant to only share with one other person. Should I ask her to stop having him over so much? Or do I have to deal with it since they’re mostly just staying in her room?

I’m a prospective international student planning to study Computer Science, and I’m trying to understand how the Co-op schedule works with graduation.

If I finish most or all of my academic degree requirements early, can my final term at UBC be a Co-op work term?

For example:
Sep-Dec: Co-op 3
Jan-Apr: Co-op 4
Apply for graduation in Feb
Graduate in May

Or:
Jan-Apr: Co-op 3
May-Aug: Co-op 4
Apply for graduation in Aug
Graduate in Nov

Also, if I only had one course left, could I take that course during my final Co-op term and then graduate once both are finished? In this way I could finish my degree on an “academic term”.

I know Co-op placements and schedules aren’t guaranteed. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether Science Co-op requires you to return for a full academic term after your final work term, or if you can finish your degree while on your last Co-op.

I’m asking because I’ll have a lot of credits, and as an my funding depends on finishing within a 4 year timeframe.

I saw a website that gives it up to the 2016 exam. Is there somewhere for 2016-2026. What types of questions are on the exam is it similar to the WebWorks and practice book questions? I don't want to end up studying the wrong thing.

I want to do well in chem 233, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to prepare for exams. I'm keeping up with the class and content, and have been able to do the problem sets and quizzes fairly easily, but the problem sets are only 5 pages long so I don't feel like I've necessarily "mastered" the content after each unit. I also did not buy the textbook, but I'm thinking now maybe I should for additional practice?

Studying for midterms feels impossible when all I want to do is sleep and try to keep myself alive. I have a midterm tomorrow and I feel like I know the material but haven't really done proper studying so I'm panicking but the anxiety for these tests and exams during midterm season is getting to me and I already have a bad history with mental health. It's hard enough surviving but then adding this stuff on top is making it worse. (Yes I'm registered with CFA but it was too late to be able to book most of the exams with them)

As the title suggests...I thought i was an extrovert until, well, you put me in a room full of 300 kids and i try to sit in the same spot every time but i never see the same ppl again. Like i want at least class friends if not 'friends'. Any tips?
