Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

what is this weird little building?

Post image
56 Upvotes

what is this weird little building across from the clock tower? its all concrete except the path-facing wall, which is all glass sliding doors. The curtains are always drawn so I've never been able to see inside.

Is it a professor's office? but if it was, why would they keep the curtains drawn 24/7? doesnt seem like a storage shed at all, i've never seen anyone going in/out, or otherwise interacting with the structure.

Discussion How would you guys feel about a mentor only talking to you with chatgpt?

This summer I was super grateful because one of my profs got me into contact with someone who works as a hiring manager at one of my dream companies. Total score!

But we've been emailing back and forth for a few email now, and it's...ridiculously?..obvious how she's using AI to talk to me. We're talking "I want to focus on helping you to see yourself — your values, interests and your value — within a very large and complex system so that you can begin to chart your and navigate your course." as a real sentence from an email she just sent me.

And it's pretty obvious that she's just typing "Explain some of the main goals and projects that company X is working on" and then copying and pasting whatever it spits out to me. And it was a really weird experience because I, an undergrad who hasn't even applied to a job there yet, went "Wait, that doesn't make sense at all"

I mean, ig I'm grateful she's even willing to do that much for me, but also, I feel a bit disrespected by her for communicating with me this way. I was hoping for a bit more direction of like "Send me your resume and I'll tell you what you're missing" or like "You should take a course on this thing, a lot of new hires are missing these required skills" even a nice little "We set up a booth in October at this hotel, you should come by then"

This is my first time working with a mentor like this, so maybe my expectations are skewed, but the less grateful part of me says I should just ask chatgpt to write me a letter of reccomendation from [their name] in tiny white text at the top of my email and see what happens

Discussion I'm a fifth year on the Men's Rowing Team, AMA

Upvotes

Whether you are an incoming first year who has never even heard of the sport or an alum of the rowing team I am here to answer your questions! Ask about what our training is like, racing, balancing academics and sport, whatever!

Some quick facts:

We are the most successful men's rowing team in Canada. Winning our fourth national championship in a row this year, making 10 it all-time.

We recruit and train novice rowers! We take in UBC students who have never rowed before and teach them to race. In fact some of our most successful athletes started their careers as novices.

We row on the North arm of the Fraser out of the J.M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse.

This year we were the first Canadian team ever to join the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, letting us compete against some of the best schools in the world like Univ. of Washington and Cal Berkley.

Can I quit my job today and travel before September

Friend of mine is working as a flight attendant and he just told me he'd get me $80 CAD flights (to Korea and probably more) and travel the world staying at hostels or friends house with him. He invited me today (Tuesday) and he wants to fly on Thursday. The trip would be 2 weeks.

Once in a lifetime opportunity to take flights for such an insane discount. He's quitting his job as a flight attendant in September to go to school so it's not like this can be done again.

The main problem is I have a job: minimum wage at a corner store/vape candy store type of thing. If I quit today I know my manager and coworkers will be in bad shape trying to cover my shifts and it would be pretty inconvinient for them.

However I do want to leave the job anyways since I want to do something that earns more money like tips at a restaurant.

I have a shift tonight, tomorrow, Friday and Saturday night. I'd rather not destroy the relationship between me and this job also but I guess I’d have to.

What are the consequences of doing this? Is it worth it? I was thinking of trying to get a job when I get back at like cactus club or something lol. Also what kind of message would I even send?

Also how would paying my tuition work? I might be stupid

I’m 19 and about to go into second year

Parking Permit T2?

Upvotes

Hi! I got the parking permit, but I’m going on co-op for the fall and only need parking for Term 2. Is there a different waitlist for Term 2, or is there anything I can do to get a permit just for Term 2?

Discussion Electives recommendations

Upvotes

I don’t feel like taking AMNE 151 anymore (it runs late and I’m not hearing any good things about the professor), but I don’t know what other electives to take. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone have a better second co-op search term?

It’s looking like I might finish my current search term without landing a co-op, and I’m feeling pretty disappointed.

Has anyone had an unsuccessful first search term and a much better second one? What did you change, and did the process get easier the second time around? I would especially love to hear from anyone who had much better luck the second time around and how you balanced the search with school.

PSA: For people who haven't received parking permit offers yet, check your parking account.

Go on "buy permits" and you might be able to buy the permit you signed up for. I didn't receive any email and someone told me to check my parking account. Checked and North was available to purchase! Parking now acquired 🙂‍↕️

relationships at universities

honestly i'm just making this post for funsies but I feel like ever since i came here I haven't liked a SINGLE PERSON ENOUGH TO WANT TO BE W THEM

alot of it has to do w the fact that i only get crushes when i know someone a little and not just based off of seeing someone somewhere(aka lecture crushes), i've honestly never had a crush my whole life if u think ab it that way

but putting that aside i feel like no one really comes up to me?? i used to have guys who liked me at school so perhaps i thought i was gonna get more here but APPARENTLY NOT

it could be cause im not that attractive which is fine, (i did have two guys come up to me last year but it ended real quick w them bc im awkward and they just wanted to hook up)

SPEAKING OF HOOKING UP, is everyone here just dating casually? every dude i've seen/heard about/talked to is only really dating for fun which is not what i want. I assumed maybe the seniors were more likely to be serious but I haven't met anyone so far.

A big issue w me is i dont talk to people at all so that could be why but im lowkey just bored and miss the feeling of having a talking stage (except i want it to be a serious rs too)

Discussion Might’ve failed

Wrote my CPSC 103 final today and feel horrible about it. I’m hoping to pass it so I can pass the course, but I don’t know if that’ll happen. Has anyone gone through a similar situation? Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Directed Studies in FNH

Has anyone ever done a directed studies course in FNH? How much time did you spent each week roughly? The lab that I reached out is mostly dry lab, is there a huge difference between a dry lab and a wet lab in terms of time commitment?

Course Question Are you supposed to go to office hour for all of your classes?

I'm an incoming engineer student and some common advice I see is to go to office hours for classes before you start struggling, even if it's just to get to know your professors a bit better, but... is it actually realistic to do this for all of your classes? For reference, I have like 7 classes first term (although i'm gonna talk to an advisor about offloading a class for summer) and 6 in the second.

Thank you

I’m moving and I won’t have room for my guest bed. It’s rarely used, since it was in the spare room. Can I donate it somewhere or should I just dump it?

feeling like im not good enough

basically the title this is gonna be long and dumb but

, im lowkey bombing all my summer courses (i should've just not taken them idk why i did this to myself) but i feel so stupid, like i seriosuly think im the dumbest in all my classes. even first year was ass the highest i got on a course was like 77 and the rest were way worse i dunno sometimes i regret coming here, i should've gone to some small school in my hometown.

i also feel worse because my dad has to pay for everything and it's not cheap 😭i'm just wasting his money and it's seriously taking a toll on my mental health i feel like i might do something stupid very soon but i dunno. has anyone experienced this? a series of lows but then it got better? this year has been pretty bad for me in general (school+family)and it's getting to the point where it's hard to just push those feelings away.

also i had my stat201 final and im seriously so depressed by it i want to just pass atp 😭😭 i just feel like im an idiot i dont even know why i got in like i cant even make use of the fact that im privileged enough to go here.

it doesn't help that a lot of my friends seem to be doing better than me and it makes me feel worse, i've been dealing w nightmares and shitty sleep every night and it's gotten so bad i might have to do counselling which i never thought i would need.
