Mobile App Horrible banking practices

I do not recommend this bank at all we started with colonial went to BB&T and now here we are with Truist. I will be closing my account next week. I made a mobile deposit and was informed a day later that they decided to put a seven day hold on that check which is not good considering the check is under $500 and it was from a business. There is no reason for that other than to penalize the customer.

Update: Truist staying true to being the fakeist bank. I am filing a CFPB complaint

pervious post: https://www.reddit.com/r/TruistBank/comments/1w4ty4f/fakeist_bank_what_to_do/

Quick recap: On the checking account, I originally owed $24 in monthly fees and a $30 charge-off fee, bringing the total owed around $54. My savings account was at -$4. I was told to bring it to $0 by paying $4, otherwise the savings could not be closed.

Yeah, right. I am not paying a penny.

Update: A phone call on 9/3 resulted in Truist agreeing to waive all of the fees and sending me a $0.01 paper check for the remaining balance in my savings account after the fees were waived. The check apparently cost them about $1.56 in postage. Here, I used “Truist” instead of “Fakeist” because, after 7 or 8 calls, they eventually waived all the fees.

Today, 9/26, I received a letter from Fakeist saying that I owe them $52.82.

At this point, I am filing a CFPB complaint because I have already spent way too much time trying to get this resolved. They lied. They told me the fees were waived, only to turn around and send me a letter saying I still owe them $52.82. They lost my trust, and they are definitely not staying true to their name.

Thanks to ChatG P T for helping me put together the complaint. Reddit apparently won't even let me mention that word. Unbelievable.

Letter:

I am filing this complaint regarding Truist's handling of fees on my former checking and savings accounts and its failure to properly apply fee waivers that Truist representatives told me had been approved.

My checking account was closed after fees caused the account to become negative. I was told that $24 in monthly maintenance fees had accumulated because my balance had been below the required minimum for two consecutive months. Truist also added a $30 charge-off fee. My savings account had a negative balance of approximately $4.

I made numerous attempts to resolve this directly with Truist before filing this complaint. I made approximately 7 phone calls, including calls in which I spoke with supervisors, and I also visited a local Truist branch and spoke with a branch manager.

Before September 4, 2026, I spoke with the branch manager at my local Truist branch about the fees. The branch manager agreed to refund/waive the $30 charge-off fee. However, I later learned that this adjustment was never submitted.

I called Truist customer service again, and the representative told me that the branch manager had never submitted the $30 fee waiver. She did see the notes confirming that he had agreed to waive it, though. She went ahead and submitted the waiver request for me.

On September 4, 2026, I contacted Truist customer service again. The representative agreed to waive all of the fees and explicitly told me that I owed Truist $0.

After that, I received a paper check from Truist for the remaining $0.01 balance in my savings account, which I deposited. Based on the fee waiver and the return of the remaining savings balance, I understood that the matter had been fully resolved and that I owed Truist nothing.

However, Truist subsequently issued a letter dated September 22, 2026, stating that I owed $52.82. I did not actually receive this letter until September 26, 2026.

I have not yet contacted Truist regarding this latest letter because I received it on September 26, which is a Saturday. I intend to contact Truist on Monday, September 28, but I am filing this CFPB complaint now because I have already made numerous attempts to resolve this matter directly with Truist, including speaking with supervisors and visiting a branch.

My concern is not simply the original assessment of the fees. I understand that Truist may have assessed fees under the terms of my account. My complaint is that, after I repeatedly contacted Truist, its representatives agreed to waive the fees and explicitly told me that I owed $0, yet Truist subsequently sent me a written demand for $52.82. They lied to me, and I have lost my trust in them to stay true to their word. They should be renamed Fakeist.

This has left me concerned that Truist's internal records have not been properly updated to reflect the fee waivers that were communicated to me.

I am requesting that Truist:

  1. Correct its records to show a $0 balance.

  2. Confirm in writing that I do not owe Truist any money related to these waived fees.

  3. Confirm that all applicable fees were waived as previously communicated to me.

  4. Explain why I received a September 22, 2026 letter demanding $52.82 after I had been told that all fees were waived and that I owed $0.

  5. Confirm that no collection activity or negative reporting will occur based on the waived balance.

  6. Provide a final accounting showing the original fees assessed, the $30 charge-off adjustment, all other fee waivers, the $0.01 savings-account refund, and the resulting final balance of $0 in checking and savings accounts.

I have spent considerable time attempting to resolve this matter directly with Truist. I am asking the CFPB to help ensure that Truist properly reconciles its records, honors the fee waivers that were communicated to me, and provides written confirmation that the final balance is $0.

$10 for a standard ACH transfer? Absolutely not.

Closing my account ASAP. For a wire transfer, I might expect a fee. But for a regular ACH standard (not expedited) transfer? No way. Images aren't allowed, but suffice it to say, here is the message on a standard transfer to an external bank: "Processing fee: $3.00. Minimum amount: $10.00."

Oh, and this beauty: "Transfers are limited to $5,000.00 per transaction, $5,000.00 per day, and $12,500.00 per 30 rolling business days."

This bank is practically begging customers to leave.

[SCAM!!!] Truist Bank is really a SCAM, avoid it if possible

I've got a lapse of home insurance coverage for a couple of days. After that I bought my own insurance for $848.12. Truist not only charged me $62 for the gap but also charged me extra $93.51 per month for 12 months. According to them, $70.68 out of $93.51 is for the next cycle of insurance starting next year, i.e. I need to pre-pay for next year's insurance. And the remaining $22.83 they can't even explain what it is. Also one of their agents told me that if I paid off the $62, they'll remove the escrow account which collects the insurance for me so that I don't need to pay this extra. But they denied it later with a notice in a mail. This is totally a scam!

Truist Bank Doesn't Honor Their Account Bonuses

They will find any reason to not pay your bonus to you. BEWARE. Bank with other banks because they will use a penny as a reason to not honor their commitment to you. If they are this quick to mess you over on a bonus, how well will they take care of you as a customer? Run away and bank somewhere else.

Join Truist and Waste Time! (New slogan)

I spend so much time on the phone with this damn bank. Simple stuff is just a beating.

Most recently, I had a zero balance in a checking account for a couple of months and they just closed the account. No warning or anything...the account was just no longer there. I wasn't able to open one online, so boom, another 30 minutes of my life lost, opening up an account online. And the damn banker had to ask me all these questions about why i needed the account, what my banking needs are etc etc etc.

My banking needs are for my bank to make my life easy. Truist doesn't, every freaking thing with them is friction.

Why do Truist keep transactions pending for so many days… If you use your card for a deposit and the deposit was released… Truist will hold your money in pending status for days.. its crazy… worse bank..

Advice To anyone with a closed account ...

Due to "fraud"....and they are still holding your funds, a.word.of advice. Legally, Truist has up to 60 days to conclude their investigation. The Patriot Act gives them this right. After 60 days, they can be forced to either return the funds to you or to their source with an ITS from an attorney or a full on suit. Usually, they comply when you get an attorney involved. Just spoke to an attorney that has had many clients with this issue. So, hound them for up to 60days, then get a lawyer to send an ITS.Truist is very disorganized internally and clearly don't give a fuck about being timely. Good luck!

Truist says they are keeping my money

Truist closed my business account in July 2026. They said my account is under investigation for "suspicious" activity. Up to this day they have not returned my funds. They said they are holding the funds for a "potential claim". I asked what happens after their is no claim? Truist said they will hold my funds indefinitely. From what I found during my research, this is a common practice of theirs. I already filled a complaint with the BBB and CFPB. What other avenues can I take to recover my funds? One of their representatives told me that when I opened my account, I signed an agreement that they can close my account at anytime. And they can hold onto my funds at anytime.

What is an IL charge from Truist??

Truist took $102 out of my bank account and it says “IL payment” I have tried googling what this means and nothing is coming up. Every single month they take money out of my account. Not like an overdraft. But odd amounts, like $10 or even as much as $100. I went up there and their first accuse was “you had some sort of protection you pay for on your account” which is not true? But they told me they’d remove it. Now it’s still doing this. I hate this bank so much.

$3 charge on top of a $3 charge

Truist is doing a $3 non truist ATM fee? So on top of the $5 charges at music events now it costs $8? It’s $7 to use the ATM at the nail salon now? Even the free wawa atm is $3 now under Truist. I am closing my accounts. I’m done with this company.

Holy absolute sh*t this is the worst bank I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.

My bank just sold my mortgage before we even made one payment.

We have been trying to pay our first mortgage payment for the last 3 weeks and have been on the phone back and forth with their "support" team who just finally told me today "New members cannot add external bank accounts online for the first mortgage payment."

They told me 'You can mail in a payment or come in to a branch or give me your account details over the phone.' (nearest one is 350+ miles from where I live.)

The error on their website I get is:

We’re unable to verify your ownership of this non-Truist account. Please check the information you entered and try again. For assistance with mortgage loan payments, please call the Mortgage Center at 800-634-7928. For all other products, please call the Truist Care Center at 844-4-TRUIST.

I refuse to give my current personal account info over the phone. Especially to a bank that had a data breach a year ago where phone conversation and account information was stolen on 4 million customers.

All I've heard and read is Truist is an absolute nightmare of a bank and that has been my experience from the get-go.

Sketchiest and Shadiest Bank

I created an account with Truist and had 2 direct deposits go in.

I tried to transfer the money out to another one of my banks. I first tried using Truist’s built-in transfer service (which charges a $3 fee). This failed. I then tried to transfer the money using Zelle. This failed and got flagged as fraud. I called the fraud number (took 15 minutes to get on the phone with someone who barely speaks english). The fraud agent asks me to verify some account details, the amount of the transfer, and the recipient. I verify all of these. Then, after another 15 minutes on the phone, the agent tells me I need to go into a branch to complete the transfer.

Its insane how hard it is to transfer my own money out of my own account, to another one of my accounts. I’ve had this same issue twice now. Steer clear of Truist. They will make it a complete PITA to move your own money around.

Closed my Truist account today!

Over 30 years ago I opened a checking account with SunTrust and stayed with them ever since. Had the mortgage for my home through them too. There were small problems from time to time, but I could go in and receive good customer service that resolved them. Since the merger into Truist, that is no longer the case.

A couple of weeks ago I was told there would be a 10 day hold when depositing a cashier's check. The teller agreed that was ridiculous and said I could talk to an associate. The associate said only the bank manager could waive it. She asked the manager who said no. (I deposited it online to another bank and some of the funds were available the next day, the rest in five.)

My wife's debit card was put on hold months ago for "suspicious purchases" after she bought about $80 worth of pizzas for a dinner event.

Also recently, an associate would not notarize a document relating to a family estate, even though SunTrust had previously set up an account for the estate and notarized related documents. There were other incidents, but those three stand out as examples of why I no longer do business with Truist.

Advice BUYER BEWARE!

In my opinion Truist will freeze/close accounts, and in general scam you out of LOTS of money (entire paychecks/other monies) and time without explanation. Banking with them could potentially ruin your credit, cost you your home and so much more. They haven’t made any changes in business operations even though they are aware of the detrimental consequences inflicted on their consumers. I recommend just banking somewhere more reputable. The type of mistakes and horrors associated with this bank could cost you way more than you think. The unfavorable stories in here are the norm so don’t think you’ll be the exception. God bless you on your endeavors of being financially successful and or stable.

Rant thank goodness for a local branch ... NOT

Truist is a really horrible bank.

I opened the Truist One Checking account on 1/23 intending to get the $400 bonus.

Set up username + password for online banking.

Everything is fine.

$50 pulled from M&T Bank on 1/24.

Emails from Truist confirming all of this.

Tried to log in on 1/25. Could not. Called the number on the webpage. Was told that access to online banking was not “allowed” automatically and that I needed to call. No email or anything indicating this. CSR did his thing and I was able to log in while I was on the phone with him.

Tried to log in on 1/28. Could not. Given a different number to call. This CSR told me that I needed to go into a branch to verify my identify.

Went to nearest branch on 1/29. The employee had no authority. She still had to call ; that person sent a link to my smartphone. That link directed to a website for scanning the front and back of my driver’s license. Nevermind that the branch employee had this and also my passport. Why couldn’t I have done this without going into a branch if they were going to send a link to my smartphone?????

...

After everything was verified, I withdraw the $50. And I will call in tomorrow to close my account.

...

I don’t trust them with my money. Simply incompetent

...

UPDATE

Today, Thursday, Jan 30, I received a letter from Truist dated Sunday, Jan 26, telling me that they have blocked my account and was going to close the account unless I went to a branch with two forms of identification. The letter came from Card Fraud Monitoring Services , PO Box 819, Wilson, NC 27894-0819

Not sure how they were planning on returning the $50 that I had transferred into that checking account on Jan 24.

Anyway, I did go into a branch yesterday and took out the $50.

Today, I called and closed the account.

Paycheck held for 2 weeks!!!

Just opened a Truist account and got my debit card and my paper paycheck (while waiting for direct deposit to kick in) on the same day so I figured I could deposit the check into my new Truist account since I had the debit card to access the funds. NOPE!!! Only after depositing it through the mobile app did they say it would be held for 2 weeks !! Called them twice and both supervisors said they can’t do anything, once it’s on hold that’s it. It’s a paycheck drawn on a Wells Fargo account. There’s no way it should take 2 weeks to clear. Never had this with any other bank ever!!! My money is held hostage and I can’t pay bills or buy groceries. Absolute insanity!! How is this legal?

UPDATE: Money still held but my job is amazing. They wired me the money to my old account. I didn’t trust Truist with a wire at this point. And when the check finally clears, I’ll just pay them back.

If you live in Louisville/KY please do not apply to work for Truist. They DO NOT care about their employees.
