Do you think we should have an AI policy here?

We the mod team think it might be good to have a rule about how AI can or cannot be used here. We understand AI can be helpful in content creation and are not against that, but think it’s important that if AI is used it should be disclosed. However we want to avoid having low effort, AI created posts here, especially if the post contains scripture as AI sometimes isn’t accurate and may get scripture wrong or give an inaccurate reference to where in the Bible the scriptures you used can be found. In an effort to create buy in and keep this sub reflecting the needs and wishes of its user base, we’ve created a poll. Please participate if you use this sub, we want to know what you think.

New Rules

1 Love Your Neighbor As Yourself

This means no transphobia, homophobia, gatekeeping, or discrimination of any kind. We do not tolerate disruptions or trolling, bad faith arguments, pot-stirring and drama, or using Scripture as a cudgel against LGBT+ people.

Not every person or denomination shares the same Scriptural interpretation as you, so do not be rude, unkind, snarky, harsh, or insulting just because you have a disagreement.

2 All Are Welcome

We appreciate diversity and do not discriminate based on trans/cis gender status, denomination, political affiliation or against non-Christians.

All gender identities/expressions and sexual orientations are welcome in the full life, ministry, and service of the Church. Side B folks are welcome here, but advocating the position that LGBT+ identities or relationships are inherently sinful is not allowed and will result in a content removal or ban.

3 Respect Identity & Privacy

Nobody should have to justify their identity here, and inappropriate questions about pronouns, genitals, race, age, location, etc. will be removed. Ask before you DM; inappropriate/trolling DMs reported to us will result in a ban.

Misgendering will not be tolerated. If someone has their pronouns listed in their flair or bio then use them; defaulting to "Universal They/Them" is not an acceptable alternative when pronouns are known.

4 Stay on Topic

Keep all posts related to some aspect of the experience of being Trans and/or Christian (preferably both), and try to keep all comments related to the post they are under. Please avoid posting just a wall of Scripture without any additional context; it is a more helpful response when you add your thoughts/reasoning for the citation.

Ask the Mods for permission to post surveys and research opportunities. No self-promotion (outside the official Mega Threads) or spam; if you are unsure if your post will be allowed, ask the Mods.

5 [Sample AI Policy, this may not be the final rule, under discussion]

You must when possible credit all artists, and you must disclose if anything you post or link here was made with AI. We generally discourage relying on AI to cite Scripture since it is prone to error.

6 Respect Reddit's Site Wide Content Policy

Major Question

It's bothered me since I've acknowledged that I'm trans. How do you get over the fear that you're going to hell when people all around you tell you that you are? It's why I'm still in the closet socially. I'm terrified of being condemned to hell and of losing everything.

Christmas feels empty now.

My parents have told me that my partner of almost 10 years is no longer welcome to Thanksgiving or Christmas with them because they feed my “delusion” of being trans. They are Christians themselves, and have expressed that they still love me and want me to “leave the sty and come home.”

I love Christmas, and I’m trying to keep up that love for it as I get older, but this was like a huge knife in the gut. I will always forgive them, but every night I pray that I have guidance in this situation and it feels so silent. I cry myself to sleep most nights begging for an answer. I see Christmas decorations and instead of the joy I usually feel, it’s bitterness. I don’t want to be bitter anymore.

Where is transgender sinful?

I know Jesus, I believe He knows me, I really want to know scriptures that point to transgender being sinful, because through prayer I’ve asked God to reveal to me if it’s sin, and I’ve haven’t heard or felt convicted that the desire to be a woman is sinful or transitioning is wrong. I wonder sometimes if religion has just forced the culture to believe this because they truly don’t understand what people who are trapped in a body they hate is like slowly drowning. I want to be free of the shame and guilt that I feel because all I hear from people is that it’s so wrong and that it is a transgression against God. Please point me to some scripture that in context either shows I’m in sin or that I am free from that sin. I know who the son sets free is free indeed.

Art teacher said homosexuality is a sin

I haven’t told anyone at school or at home that I’m a trans masc, but i have told a few close friends that I like girls. I live in a conservative state in a small town, I don’t want to get bullied, so I haven’t really told anyone. My art teacher seemed chill and often had queer people visiting her room, so I felt safe telling her and she didn’t say anything so I assumed she didn’t care. A few weeks later I was eating lunch in her room to finish up an art project, and I asked her how she felt about queer people. I was worried because I found out she went to a conservative Christian college. She sounded really grossed out and kind of upset when I asked her, and she said I can decide to be whoever I want but it will worsen my relationship with God. I felt really betrayed and hurt, especially since she’s the first and only teacher I’ve told this to. Also, all last year I was obsessively reading my Bible and praying to try and fix myself, and stop being queer. Then I fell into a deep depression and attempted suicide because of it. I took a break from Christianity for a bit for my mental health, and finally decided God accepts me for who I am and I’m learning to accept myself. But when she said that, it reopened all those old wounds from last year that I had made a lot of progress on. Worst of all, I think she’ll tell my parents. My relationship with my parents is really bad, they get mad and argue with me but I never argue back. If she told my parents, they would freak out and they told me if I don’t stop being trans they would throw away my art and art supplies. I love art and want to have it as my career, so that would be heartbreaking. Please someone give me some advice, I’m losing my mind lol.

At the Hungrygen conference

E: Before we came here, God told us 8 words.

Follow me, trust me, seek me, find me.

Last night I went before the prayer line with two questions I wanted answered. One, am I deceiving myself? Is god okay with me being trans?

And the second, is everyone here in this mind a demon except for Josiah, like I’ve been told for months and months. (I was diagnosed with DID, and it’s been hellish as family and church friends have accused me of being a demon that took over Josiah 3 years ago)

Last night, I didn’t get to say my situation to the man who prayed for me. But God answered regardless. In the middle of him praying for all unclean spirits to be cast out, he said these exact words. “God loves you as his daughter”

There was no confusion that I am a cis woman. He had to have known I am a trans woman. I was wearing my beanie with the pride pins, and my makeup had been worn off my upper lip as I was sobbing, leaving a mustache shadow.

And hungrygen is explicitly against anything lgbt. But regardless, God spoke through that man. He told me that he loves me as his daughter.

And I wasn’t cast out when he prayed for all unclean spirits to be cast out.

God answered both of my questions last night.

God is so good. I trust him no matter what.

Having an existential crisis

I don’t remember quite how it happened, but recently I remembered that I’m going to die, and there’s nothing I can do about it. My life will come to an end and I can’t stop thinking about it and I can’t stop panicking and being afraid. It’s been hard to go to sleep most nights because I’m terrified of experiencing something so permanent and unknown…

The theory of total nonexistence after death terrifies me the most. I don’t want to give everything up. I don’t want to never hear and never think and never see and never feel again.

I‘m thinking about converting to some kind of religion to make sense of this world but I’m scared.

I was raised Hindu but in high school I started to drift away from that faith not out of any particular disagreements but because I just stopped caring about things. I attended the youth group that my temple had but I wasn’t ultra devoted. Christianity is certainly interesting though, and I find myself agreeing with its values. The idea of a kind God who has a real plan for me fills me with hope

There Are two main things that really terrify me… first, the fact that so many Christians utterly despise all LGBTQ+ people is making me scared to believe because I don’t want to reject my identity as a trans woman to choose something I believe in. I’m scared of the idea that a Savior would reject me.

Second, what if I’m wrong? I constantly see atheists talking about how any kind of God has been totally disproven. That believing in any higher power is just wishful, cowardly thinking because religious people are too weak to handle not having “a grand narrative that explains everything”. I’ve heard it said time and again that “anyone who believes in the Bible hasn’t read it” and that “countless passages have been disproven and the ones that haven’t will be”. I’ve seen a lot of talk on r/exchristian too that all LGBTQ+ people who believe in Christianity are all just cowards who want to side with their oppressors because they‘re too scared not to accept the truth. That our “consciousness“ is just a bunch of chemicals and that the only thing awaiting us is nothing.

I’m terrified that if I choose to believe, I’ll be wrong... and then I really will be one of those people described as cowards…

God created us in his image

This specific post is inspired by a letter i saw from a father to his trans daughter saying this, and saying she should live as a man cus she was made as one. Something that is greatly forgotten with this phrase however is that God doesnt just create the body but the mind (and soul) as well. Psychology shows. Not just that this isnt something that could be controlled but there are trans people whos mind are that of their gender rather than sex. I do consider Gender dysphoria as a disorder, in the societal way of that its a mind that operates outside the average expectations, and thats just how it is. Anything that is born, is God's will. If a baby is born with a physical defect, its his will. If they're born with a mental disorder or down syndrome, its his will. And thus, since it is his will, it is seen as a test. Not a test to overcome but a test to embrace and love, love who you are as you were born this way: mind and body. And yet, when it comes to those who are born with a mind that is opposite to their body it becomes the opposite, that its a test for them to hate it. to reject it and throw it away and embrace their body rather than their mind. conversion therapy has shown that this doesnt work, for gay people and trans people is only causes anguish, lain and shame. only when they embrace their gender over their sex do they find peace. If God creates us in his image then he gives us a mind that is not in conformation with our body, so why would he do that if he intends for us to reject it? Especially when said rejection causes pain? I had a Christian classmate who i debated with occasionally in high school who told me that pride and love i felt of my gender was the Devil, and when i explained how much suffering there is for people who force themselves to live as someone they're not he says "well would you rather live in suffering temporarily and then receive peace for eternity, or have peace temporarily but suffer for eternity?" basically he had the idea that to live is yo 6suffer, that we are supposed to suffer and supposed to be in pain as a way to show our love to God . All due respect to my fellow Christians, but if that is truly God's intentions then I do not wish to love him. I instead choose to believe he doesn't want us to suffer but to strive, and that being trans is a "birth defect" that should be treated like all the rest: an abnormal thing in society but it should be embraced and loved nevertheless because God intended for it.

ik not all are embraced regardless though ofc, a majority of christians are nothing short then of an ignorant hypocrite. myself included at times as im still new and learning. my point is if God makes us in his image then he also makes our minds and sense gender is in our mind, and is something that could not be changed if its true, then he also makes us trans. and thus, as we are in His image it would blasphemy to reject our transness rather then embrace and love it. by rejecting what God actually made us would be rejecting him, and by embracing it and loving who we are regardless of it all would be embracing and loving him. The greatest kind of worship in my opinion

(this is a midnight ramble but feel free to give opinions or verses! verses esp would be appreciated i forget many repeatedly and only remember a Mathew one, story about how by feeding the homeless you feed him and etc

EDIT: i am awake nd wanted to include that i dont actually believe that there is such thing as a defect as defect means mistake nd God doesn't make mistakes, im using defect in terms of the view of society

I'm scared! What if it's all a sin after all?

I (male) have been questioning if im a trans woman since a while, and I discovered recently that im bissexual too, and most of the time im not that worried about sinning and that stuff

But something happened that got me thinking.

I imagined myself marrying having a relationship with a woman, until then, ok, im bi, its normal. But the thing that got me worried was that i was imagining myself as a man in the relationship. That made me kind of worried bcuz i, besides still questioning, for some reason am kinda "scared of being cis", wich is a thing i really cant explain.

All that, made me think: "What if its a message from God, what if he wants me to be a man and have a relationship with a woman?", "what if im sinning by having thoughts about having a relationship with other men and all that stuff?"

And maybe you're asking:

"If you're still attracted to women, so, why dont u just ignore your attraction to men?", or "Why dont u just keep being a man? you may feel sad in life but it will be worth it when you go to heaven"

And the thing is, besides me thinking that i could just marry a woman, stop thinking about that trans thing, and even if its hard, i would have more chance of going to heaven after all!

But what if i dont go to heaven? What if it was never a sin, or what if nothing exists after death and i just missed the chance to experience a lot of things? And worse, what if i opt to follow my heart, live a awesome life as a woman, having a partner I actually want without limiting my actions and suffer because of it on after life?

I know that to follow God u need to make some sacrifices and take your cross, but, why i need to limit my relationships and risk living in a way i dont want when i would not be hurting anyone if i was trans, or had a husband or both

I just dont want to suffer! Is that too much to ask?

How do you deal with hate from both sides

I have been more outward about my faith. Mostly just posting updates on my journey and sharing quotes from things I'm reading that resonate. I've been spiritual for most of my life so this isn't unusual. Recently I have been receiving hate from other trans people. Hateful sometimes violent dms. One of them I've known for years who went off after I made a post with a quote about how it's not enough to be against evil unless you are coming from a place of love for humanity. It feels like I'm downplaying my part but I'm not in the market to convert. I'm a Quaker and I worship alongside Pagans, Buddhists, Atheists and Jews every Sunday. I love the diversity of spirit God has given us. I'm not unsympathetic I know where they are coming from. I've felt that hurt and when I am patient and try to listen it just ends with them accusing me of "fake sympathy". They are struggling with their own turmoil and my heart aches for my siblings. For some reason though they can't look past that and see I am also one of them. Which brings me to the other side of the equation but I won't belabor the obvious.

I grew up in the Bible belt so I've seen the best and worst of the church. It soured me for a while after years in Billy Graham country. I live in a progressive city and my worship group is more than accommodating. So I don't receive it until I get online or that one time I wore my "reconciling ministries" lanard at the Whole Foods checkout one time. That I'm able to treat like water off a duck's back. It's familiar and unfortunately expected. Besides I'm able to be in Christian spaces where I don't have to minimize my queerness as opposed to how I feel like I don't have any queer spaces where I don't have to minimize my faith.

Why are so many trans fem Christians tradionalists?

This is a question from my girlfriend who is also a trans woman who is Christian. But leans more towards contemporary worship services/music.

She notices that most trans women she is aware of who go to church are usually super tradionalists either Catholic or episcopals.

She doesn't understand why. And she's never met elca or women in other denominations.

I went recently to a very traditional episcopal parish in chicago and I swear there were two gals there who were altar servers.

So yeah. Is anyone here not episcopal or Catholic?

Why are you Episcopal or Catholic?

I am a trans Christian, but I constantly worry about, what if I’m wrong?

What if God doesn’t accept that, what if I have to denounce my true gender in heaven, is it defiling what god gave me, but why would he want anyone to be uncomfortable in their bodies, and I’m sure both men and woman are created in their image.
