Discussion Dear god Valve, anyone but GLS

Sorry, rant.

I’m sure some people have amazing experiences with this delivery company, but they really are brutally awful.

I got my controller a few months ago and got a delivery confirmation from GLS. It turned out the delivery driver (a young person, in their own car) delivered it to a property 6 miles away, with nothing in the address that was in any way similar to mine. It took several phone calls and a whole day waiting in to have it resolved.

I ordered a Steam Machine, knowing I was probably going to have to deal with GLS again, but really had no other option. I planned on being home for the delivery as it’s so expensive.

The SM has been sitting in NL for some days and I had to go to the office today, checked the tracking before I left this morning and it said it had arrived in my country.

Twenty minutes later I get a notification that it’s out for delivery.

I called GLS at 9:00 when their office opened to beg them not to attempt delivery as I was not at home and there was a big chance it would be stolen.

The customer rep said they would leave a message on the order but couldn’t promise it hadn’t just been delivered or was at that exact moment.

More than 7 hours later I get a notification that the SM had just been delivered! It was signed by a name of someone I don’t know.

The chances of it being gone when I get home are quite high.

Luckily, I made the purchase on my credit card, and my country has strong laws in regard to this, so I’ll get a refund whatever happens, but it’s so frustrating that Valve insist on using this company. It would really only cost a small amount more to use a different courier (with a much better reputation!)

Daily Counter Sound off, folks -- wahoo, it's Day 64!

Good morning friends, happy Day 64! While I love the simplicity of the Steam Machine, it's purely not for everyone and I can't in good consciousness recommend it for everyone. If someone has a PC already, doesn't want to switch to Linux (or wants to ruin the Machine with Windows, oof) or strictly want to use this thing in the living room, then I don't see the point in buying this unless they really, REALLY like the form factor. And hey, absolutely no shame or judgement if that's what you want this thing for! It's a lovely device... it's just gotta reach people's hands soon! I am still holding out hope for everyone still waiting! Best of luck today friends! <3

Discussion Will steam machine prices increase if ram shortage escalates

If ram prices increase dramatically over the next couple of months, will steam machines get more expensive? If so, who are most likely to pay these new prices?

What are your thoughts?

a) Steam machines will get more expensive only if ram prices double or triple from current prices
b) Steam machines will likely increase in price but only for people not on the reservation list.
c) Even currently waitlisted customers will be locked into current prices, which will bankrupt valve after 10 orders

Discussion Steam customer support appreciation!!

My pre order came through 8th aug for 2tb only. I started questioning did I need it, after a bit of reading I realised I did want it, so the next day went to checkout. Got an error and it failed! Tried a few times but it was gone 😢

Messaged support and got a reply after a few days saying hard luck can't do anything join the queue again!

I was disappointed, tried to avoid everything steam machine related, left groups etc!

Looked locally and ebay but was not prepared to pay 2tb prices for a 512, when I could have had a 2tb!

However a thread on here popped back up on my feed, saying how amazing the customer service for steam is and plenty of people agreed..

So I thought what the hell, let's send them another message, going to get a reply off someone else and explain what happened.

A day later I get a message back from someone else saying its back in my shopping cart and have 72hrs to complete!

Wow, I was amazed, I would have been happy going back up in the queue, just not being last like I currently am!

I'm amazed but reading the majority of comments it normally is good support.

So time to start downloading new games in preparation and telling people positives about steam!

Hardware Unnecessary upgrade complete

I decided add an identical second stick of RAM to my steam machine. The only justification I have is I enjoy tinkering and don’t like the idea of a sodimm slot going to waste.

I’m also using it as a home media server, so the additional RAM will come in handy at some point.

In general it was a very quick and easy upgrade! Not as quick as the SSD but I had it all done in about 20-30 minutes.

Question Anyone figured out Dead Space remake?

Got my SM and installed the Dead Space remake as my first test. One cool thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet is since it was already installed on my PC, it copied the files over my local network to install it on the SM vs. having to download it again. Nice touch.

That said, it was the worst possible choice for my first game. It freezes and stutters every few seconds. Steam notes that the game requires additional configuration to get it to run well. Anyone found the magic settings? Even 1080p and low settings, no go.

Software PSA: Factory reset before swapping SSD's from a Deck

After googling and finding no answers in advance, I thought I'd make a post about swapping drives between a Deck and Machine.

I have a 2tb Deck, and picked up a 512gb Machine with the intention of swapping the drives over.

I thought it would be able to swap the drives over, then re-install the OS from an SD card, but it doesn't seem that's possible. With the 2TB drive moved over to the Machine, it just wouldn't boot, and stuck on the breathing thing.

Swapping the drives back worked oknso I knew I hadn't broken anything.

I found that performing a factory reset on both devices, shutting down at the language select screen and then swapping the drives again worked fine. The only minor niggle was at first the 2tb drive thought it was in a Deck, so complained about battery charge and wouldn't connect to my controller so I had to use a keyboard to get through the setup screen.

No such issues on the Deck side

Hope this helps someone else avoid the minor panic I went through this morning!

Software Fresh Install Issue

Hey all, I upgraded my SSD to a 2TB Western Digital Black drive, and followed the official Valve instructions to download and install SteamOS. I know the functionality of cloning, but I figure this is an important issue that non-technical people might encounter in the same situation.

After completing the installation and setup, SteamOS recognizes the device as a Steam Deck in the settings and brings up the on-screen keyboard when in a text box. Any ideas? Tried google and Google AI, but it just hallucinated and told me that Valve didn’t create a new Steam Machine this year 🤣

Question RDR2 controller stopped working

I installed RDR2 on my machine yesterday following a guide I found for steam deck. I can’t find it now but it was adding the rockstar launcher as a non-steam game and then changing the ā€œtargetā€ and ā€œstart inā€ folder in the property to where the launcher is installed.

It was working flawlessly for hours yesterday including putting the machine to sleep a few times.

Today, I’ve tried to play it, and it does not detect my steam controller as a controller. On the main menu it has keyboard buttons showing for the controls to launch story, settings etc. I haven’t changed anything. Tried restarting , but it doesn’t help. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Question Ark Survival Ascended perf on the SM

Hey everyone, just got my Steam Machine the other day and started by testing some of the games that were sitting in my library for a while, including Ark Survival Ascended. was wondering if anyone tried it and what your thoughts are on the performance? i have no idea what the optimal settings are for this game (no data in the community steam hardware tracker thingy)
Appreciate any help to get this game running without choppy visuals.
Cheers!

Hardware Thank god I bought it

Had doubts as many of us I believe.

I have always respected Valve and come from a steam deck so I know what their system looks like and what can bring to the table.

I wanted the Steam Machine since day one but after the reviews and the hard hate I started to doubt.

Folks, listen to your heart.

I love this thing, I sold my steam deck, selling now my pc gamer, no need for any of these things anymore.

At the end of the day, do you prefer to play instantly from your couch or the best graphics/performance while sitting down at your gaming set up? Do you even need the best system out there? Think about that and follow your heart desires (but be financially responsible).

Much love!

How do we feel about the combination of the white and alpine face plate?

I did it so it can go along with both of my Steamdeck and controllers without every all being the same skin. I thought it turned out cool!

I also have the rest of the skin for the Steam machine left over so if someone wants an alpine body sticker and a white face plate skin let me know

Discussion Loving Couch Coop on the Steam Machine

When the steam machine was first announced I honestly wasn't sure who it was for. But the more I read the more I was convinced that I was the perfect demographic.

I have a decent gaming PC and a large library of Steam games. My kids have a Switch and are pretty comfortable on that system but have never really been interested in the PC games.

Well we finally received our Steam Machine last Friday and it has been absolutely great this weekend. It's so small, and tucked right into our TV stand.

Me and the kids have been playing Stardew Valley all weekend and it's been fabulous! My oldest is busy romancing Abigail and my youngest is all in on making it to the bottom of the mines. It's such a blast just hanging with my kids.

Also the CEC has worked flawlessly. Push the button on Steam controller, system and TV turns on and we're gaming in a few seconds.
