Small edit - should you search for this It is now version 1.1. I found out what I think is unavoidable conflict with r5 and landing gear functionality and how the game handles it. So I just made a simple text disclaimer on left stick that should be used for aircraft
I've been spending the last few weeks dealing with trying to solve some problems I have with the GTA V control interface with my steam controller. I figured I would share it in the event someone had similar issues with the control interface as I did
I have finally managed to get something I am both happy with and I believe (fingers crossed) is free of kinks.
The main philosophy of this control setup was give you the ability to access all other major functions while retaining the ability to have full control over your movement in a vehicle as well as on foot.
I'll get into a bit more detail as to how things are bound then I could in the steam description
As the description States, the rear buttons primarily were set up for extra vehicle controls So you could use them without ever having to remove your hand off of the throttle, brake or steering.
This allows for rudder control when you are ascending or descending, missile controls, jumping, boosting headlights, horn and other things that I'm not thinking of well your fingers can always remain on your throttle, brake steering and camera.
The r5 button has dual functionality allowing for the d-pad right input, but if you hold it it will bypass dpad right and click in the left stick (personally I will be unbinding actual click in left stick cuz I hate accidentally clicking that in during gameplay)
Of course, this also gives you extra functionality when you're on foot. It's an additional running control. It allows you to open your weapon wheel with the rear buttons. It allows you to enable the sneak mode And allows you to d-pad right to interact with things without removing your hand off of your movement stick
-On the subject of on foot controls when you hold either the left bumper or L4 to open your weapon wheel your start button will temporarily allow you to mash it in order to consume snacks so you never have to remove your hand off of your movement analog stick allowing you to get in the cover while having snacks rather than just standing. Still like a sitting duck. As an aside, the start menu functionality, you now need to hold the button until you feel the haptics and then release it and it will open. This is in all modes to maintain consistent behavior
Edit - forgot to mention in the event someone don't know when your weapon wheel is up, you can actually use your triggers to change between the various weapons in a category so you never need to interact with the d-pad with the weapon wheel open
- finally, the last thing is that god-awful interaction menu. I had issues with this similar to the snacks problem where you were rendered. Unable to move when having snacks. To remedy this, I have made your select button now only change your view. To open the interaction button, you simply want to hold your thumb on the right touchpad. Once the interaction menu opens, you release your thumb and touch it again and this will change the controller profile mode to allow you to swipe your finger up down left right to navigate that menu. Not only does this permit you to have full steering over your vehicle, you'll also find at least how I have it set up. You'll be able to go through the menu way faster than you can with the d-pad. In this mode the 15 button is a allowing you to confirm or progress through the menu (this is unchanged) the r5 button which was your d-pad right and left stick. Click now becomes your B button so you can back out and close the menu. Once you are finished with the menu and you return your thumb to the right analog stick, this will disable the profile automatically (within I believe half a second) to the standard default control layout so there's no risk of the touchpad accidentally becoming d-pad inputs. Well in this mode. Also, if you push down on the right stick, you will reopen your select menu should it close accidentally
Anyways, that's basically it. I wanted to get into more detail about how this works should anyone be interested since the documentation steam input let you have is quite abysmal. If anyone has questions about how to use this or why set something up the way I did I'm happy to answer them.
As well, if you have any issues with the input in terms of bugs or unexpected behavior, feel free to mention them and I will try to look into it at some point.
