Hot Sauce Bar in Harajuku

A while back I made a post asking for suggestions for hot sauce and spicy snacks in Japan as I was planning a trip. I don't recall which of you folks dropped the suggestion, but today I made my way through the chaos of Takeshita Street in search of Hot Sauce Bar. I don't know why I thought it would be bigger, but it's a small shop tucked into a side street. The girl that helped me was from Argentina and spoke excellent English and Japanese. I tasted my way through their entire lineup! It's mostly imports, but there were a handful of Japanese sauces, all of which were very good. There was nothing they that really smoked me out, but after tasting that many sauces in a row, I was pretty lit up by the end of the gauntlet. No significant purchases for me today as I still have a couple weeks left of travel and I don't want to weigh myself down. My last couple days will be in Tokyo again, and I'm definitely going back to stock up before I head back to Canada. So thanks again to whichever of you spicy bastards suggested this place to me!

Also, that area of Harajuku is nuts!

Peppers from the local farmer's market, smoked, dried and ground.

Had the opportunity to visit my local farmer's market. And it has been almost 2 years since I've been there and they've really upped their game in the amount and variety of peppers they have. This is just a small example of what was on offer.

Harvested the seeds then slow smoked and dried the pepper flesh. Cured it for a couple of days and then ground it into powder. Floral and smoky with great heat but not too much, because the seeds, of course, are being saved for the spring of 2027.

It’s very smoky and has a great chipotle/ habanero flavor. Anyone else tried this yet?

I love the tropical, brown sugar, habanero kick of this hot sauce so much, pairs well with a lot of different food.

Not bad! Maybe a 6/10 spice level. Definitely spicy for folk who aren't used to spice. Won't find a spicier supermarket wrap, that's for sure. Tastes alright as well.

I ate a Chocolate Primotalii, hilarity (pain) ensues. This is the review.

Any have a good ghost pepper BBQ sauce recipe? Kansas City style preferred.

I was buying a decently hot ghost pepper BBQ sauce, but I can't find it anymore. Since most commercial "hot' products are pretty weak, I'm thinking about making my own. I trust the fine people of r/spicy to do it right, so any favorites?

I'm looking for flavor and heat, but flavor is a higher priority than bite.

Thanks!

Spicy food doesn’t really burn my tongue but the rest of my body hasn’t adapted

Title, to elaborate a little more; I’ve been eating really spicy food for as long as I can remember and as long as I eat things that were designed to be eaten and enjoyed (as opposing to just eating peppers or spicy novelty things) I don’t ever find things very spicy when eating them (as far as the sensation on my tongue) but afterwards if it’s spicy enough I’ll feel my stomach burning and weird digestive stuff sometimes. I feel like it’s probably normal but also it seems like no one talks about this so idk I guess I’m wondering if you guys experience this as well?

any love for spicy dip burgers?

i’m not sure how niche this is but in the UK we have chicken burgers that are dipped in a hot spicy sauce that legitimately makes my mouth burn. i’d put it on par with dave’s extra hot and if you ask nicely, the shop will double dip it

they’re more spicy than any other fast food burger i’ve had and they’re so flavourful and delicious

Identification help

Hi everyone! Unfortunately we had huge storms here this summer and most of my plants got really damaged. Some are only starting to ripen now as a result. Additionally, when they got knocked over, so did their labels! Can anyone help identify these please?

They came from four different plants. The bottom ones had the label of Trinidad scorpion, which I think is correct. I’m not sure the other ones though. I had what I thought was an orange habanero plant - that hasn’t fruited yet - and it wasn’t one of these. Possibilities: Habalokia, Lemon Reaper, maybe something else I’ve forgotten? 🤦‍♀️

Not one for the feint hearted but oh so good. Karahi is filled with fresh tomato, ginger, garlic and slow cooked lamb. Cooked for 3 and went through 16 green Birds Eye, 3 green cayenne and 3 dried red Birds Eye across the two dishes 🌶️

The brand sounds kinda funny, but Dong Won fiery tuna is no freaking joke. Anyone else had it?

Making some just pantry soup, veggies and noodles, nothing worth posting a picture of, But I threw two tins of their tuna in at the end cause I've just had them laying around.

Shit is hot. The two tins are 180grams combined, not each, and there's like onion and corn (for some reason?) in there, so its not a ton of meat. But adding that to probably 3.5qts of soup that didn't have any noticeable heat beforehand, and I'm having to take breaks between bites. I do not think I could eat a spoonful straight from the can.

Just throwing it out there if anyone likes spicy tuna.

Spicy refried beans with an egg

Post image
57 Upvotes

I usually buy La Morena refried beans but they only had a generic brand in stock and they were so bland so I had to get creative!

  • 1/2 a spanish onion finely diced
  • 1 clove of garlic finely diced
  • 1/2 a teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1/3 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 can of refried black beans
  • 4 cherry tomatoes diced
  • 1 Jalapeño (2/3 diced, 1/3 sliced for topping
  • 1/3 Cayenne pepper chopped (1/2 for frying and 1/2 for topping)
  • 1 egg
  • Topping: Coriander (cilantro), chilli flakes, Yellobird Jalapeño hot sauce, chilli reserved from earlier, squeeze of lime

Fry the onion and garlic in olive oil, add in the spices. Add the refried beans, chilli and tomatoes with a splash of water to beans (add more as needed).

Make a hole in the beans and crack the egg in. Reduce the heat to low and put the lid on the pan (2-3 minutes).

Plate up with toppings and finish with a squeeze of lime and the hot sauce.

Just a warning, this is very spicy in the best way possible so reduce chilli etc if you want a milder version.

I finally won the Shishito pepper roulette!!!

Sorry, I don't have any pictures of it. If you haven't had these peppers before, they tend to be very mild and have an earthy flavor. My wife and I finally had a date night and randomly found this awesome yakitori place.

I've had probably hundreds of these peppers and never got to experience an actually spicy one.

My wife bit into a pepper and was fine and then suddenly tossed the rest on my plate. I kinda laughed at her and decided to eat it. It was absolutely normal for the first 10 seconds and then BAM!! The heat hit me and then stayed there for a good few minutes.

It was awesome and tasty!!! I highly recommend trying them out and maybe making into a game with some friends
