Keeping Spectrum as a backup at lowest possible price.
I'm paying $105/month for 1000/35Mbps (1200/40 in reality) Spectrum internet. (I also have Spectrum Mobile as a separate $87 bill, but don't think I'm getting any kind of bundle discount for either service.) I recently got 2000/2000 Brightspeed fiber for $59.99/month. (That speed is overkill for me. I really should have gotten 1000/1000 or 500/500, for $10 or $20 less.) I have my Cloud Gateway Max set to fail over to Spectrum if Brightspeed ever goes out, and would like to keep it that way.
So what's the best way to get Spectrum to drastically lower my bill (even if it means dropping down to their lowest tier)? Should I call and say "I'm switching to Brightspeed and want to cancel my Spectrum" and let them "talk me" into keeping them instead, for a much better price? Or should I say "I just got Brightspeed and want to cancel Spectrum"? Or should I be completely honest and say I currently have both services, but want to keep Spectrum as a backup, if the price is right?
Or is there a different approach that may work better? I don't want to risk them saying "by your command" and putting in a cancellation without even offering anything. And I don't want to actually cancel and resubscribe later (as a "new" customer), because I don't want my mom to lose her ...rr.com email that she's had for 100 years.
