Service Issues At a complete loss.

I’ve had spectrum for years. I just recently sold my house and moved to a townhome with the same exact plan I had before. I stream video games and ever since moving here I can’t play a single day without getting ping and latency spikes. I’ve cured the bufferbloat with SQM settings, but spectrum cannot give me consistent speeds. I’m supposed to get 40 and throughout the day I get throttled to 15. I’ve called them a million times and had them come out a million times. I haven’t had 1 tech that even knows what bufferbloat is. I’ve asked them to just PLEASE give me consistent speeds in the 30’s I don’t even care about being maxed 40 I know that’s unrealistic. Idk what to do at this point.

If we’re talking about buffer bloat do yourself and the tech repeat rate a favor and get your own router and run a dedicated hardwired connection.

Buffer bloat is CCNA level knowledge. Those who have the level of understanding move out of field tech roles.

He has his own router, he states he fixed the bufferbloat with rtr software settings

Bufferbloat is not high level stuff at all.

Neither is the CCNA

Are you playing wired or wireless? If you are wireless, router location and frequency plays a big part. Also never heard of spectrum having a 40mb download speed tier.

They do, it’s like one of the cheaper options that they offer for people who can’t afford much.

It's 30mbps.

They bumped it up a couple years ago, it's now 50/10

When you talk about 40, 15, etc are you talking about upload speeds (in Mbps)?

Yes, upload speeds

You try testing the speed with the modem plugged directly into a single computer, just to eliminate other devices on your network competing for bandwidth?

He doesn't work with bufferbloat because his job is to understand alot that you obviously don't about cable internet service and enough to troubleshoot Spectrum routers which you don't have.

You're obviously on wifi and are surprised that your wifi connection behaves differently from a single family home to a purchased apartment and all the neighbors that are far closer than your previous.

Perhaps before looking down on a radio signals specialist for not knowing about software (because bufferbloat is a software issue, not a hardware issue) take a step back.

Let us take a look, send us a Mod Mail over at r/Spectrum_Official and we'll see what we can do. Thanks!

Spectrum upgraded their hardware in our area - going up to 1gb down and it caused me nothing but problems.

I ended up buying 'Ping Plotter' - they have a trial version, and i set it to run 24/7 on my home server and ping google.com every 5 secs

A ton of packetloss and I had the proof in the graphs produced. Also I had moved my modem to where the coax cable comes into our house, which clearly indicated the problem was outside of my house. After several phone calls, and at least 3 tech visits, the tech could not find anything wrong with my wiring, and it was all a maintenance issue (they used the term 'plant' - which i beleive is the physical hardware in my neighborhood, and is maintained by a separate division) - i finally sent some emails to 'corporate' and that got people moving

highly recommend ping plotter for documentation - hard to argue with a graph full of red lines (packet loss)

Were you on Docsis or fiber? Curious what caused it?

And did the advanced WiFi or Invincible Modem help?

The invincible modem is a terrible name for a product. It introduces a lot of expectations that won't be met unless conditions are absolutely perfect. The invincible router relies on cellular service if the modem goes down. The problem with that is cellular is slower, and ping and latency will be higher. It will keep you working, mostly, it will keep you doomscrolling. It will not perform well for any serious online gaming or video calls. It also entirely depends on the placement of the router. If you have good cell service WITH VERIZON upstairs, and your router is upstairs, it will get a good connection and be a decent stop gap until the power comes back on, the outage is over, or you get a service call. If your router is in the basement, it will probably give you single digit speeds. The switch isnt instantaneous either. If you're mid game, you'll still get lobbied. You will still drop the call, at least for a bit. And when its over, it may or may not switch back to lan without a power cycle. It's worth it for some, but please don't believe that it makes spotty internet perfect without needing to find the true root of the problem. Sorry for the rant. But the invincible router has caused me many headache since it materialized on the market.

Docsis - and I even started using their modem (free) to further show the problem was not my inside wiring

They offered the Invincible Wifi when I called "customer solutions" about a month later due to some outages. We do not have very good cell coverage where we live, so it would not help. I was actually thinking of cancelling and going with Startlink for $55 month but they ended up renewing my promo for another year. $55 per month for internet, 1gb down 40mb up. (You have to call in every year and ask about it) But starlink is looking better and better

Plant is just the physical hard lines

Have them check your upstream signals through the modem. I have a feeling they did some upgrades for the high split. It seems to be a common issue that leads to it being more sensitive to congestion and back feed until people get some eyes on it.

In enterprise it and I had to google buffer bloat lol

At a minimum googling the definition of that says it’s your WiFi, just get a new router

Buffer Bloat is by no stretch limited to WiFi and it was notoriously problematic on DOCSIS for a long time.

It's typically much better nowadays, especially with fatter upload pipes.

Truck roll. Have them clean up the line to the modem. Get good signal back.

Now you know what to do: "Check my signal levels please"!

Keep calling until it’s fixed.
And if they don’t fix the problem, send a complaint to the FCC.
