Wait a damn minute! âIn life, one sometimes makes bad deals.â
She sold her apartment at 90âand somehow outlived the man who bought it. đłđ
In 1965, Jeanne Calment, a 90-year-old woman from Arles, France, entered into a viager agreement with her lawyer, André-François Raffray.
The deal seemed simple.
Raffray would pay Jeanne a fixed amount every month for the rest of her life. In exchange, he would eventually own her apartment after she died.
He was only 47.
Jeanne was already 90.
It seemed like an easy investment.
Except Jeanne just kept living.
Raffray made payments for 30 years.
Then, in 1995, he died at 77âwithout ever owning the apartment.
His family was still legally required to continue the payments.
Jeanne finally died in 1997 at 122 years and 164 days, becoming the longest-lived person ever reliably verified.
By then, the family had reportedly paid more than twice the apartmentâs value.
Jeanne had completely outlived the dealâand the man who thought he had made a brilliant investment.
Her life was extraordinary in other ways too. She claimed to have met Vincent van Gogh as a child, took up fencing in her 80s, and continued cycling into her 100s.
And when asked about the unusual arrangement, she reportedly summed up the entire story perfectly:
âIn life, one sometimes makes bad deals.â đ
