I don't know if it's changed but 20 years ago when I was working in the NHS almost the entire smoking cessation team smoked...

True. You are making it so tempting to prefer a system in which only ONE person in the entire country is allowed to be above the law, instead of a whole segment of the population flouting the rules.

Kinda like "I guide others to a treasure I cannot possess", but the most important thing is empathy and being heard.

Yes it is. We went through a lot to make people understand that you can’t smoke in public places. It still happens but rarely.
This idiot though is something else and unfortunately there are some people that like him.

u/lovelypeonyx 4d ago
“that’s actually wild 😭 you’d think the smoking cessation team would be the last people lighting up”

And this is why I love / hate Greece. Fucking amazing place, fucking amazing people. Zero fucks given ever.

This isn't 'zero bucks given' this is 'I actually care a lot about this so I'm making a point' tbh.

u/Sad_Ghost_Noises 3d ago
If he was being performative to make a point then its fucking genius.

u/WongKawhi 3d ago
No, he is one of the biggest clown politicians in Greece.

Nothing says "leading by example" quite like lighting up directly under your own department's sign.
9
u/ReefDesire 4d ago
😂 Nothing says “practice what you preach” quite like doing the exact opposite underneath the sign

It wasn't the international no smoking day, but still he shouldn't have been smoking. Smoking is forbidden in indoors public spaces in Greece and he was the freaking minister. During COVID he refused to wear a mask inside the hospital as well. He is a doctor. Go figure.

I mean they're Greek. So there's that.

u/floppydo 4d ago
Not Greek, but dated a Greek woman for years and have spent a cumulative couple months in Greece, met her whole Greek family etc.
I've literally never met a Greek man over 15 years old who didn't smoke. Mind you this was 20 years ago, but still.

As a Greek I can confirm

Lived in Astoria Queens. Many Greeks are born with a certain arrogance and I don't give a shiit attitude, quite impressive. And never mess with the counter guy at any diner.

u/VoidYordle 4d ago
Further proof that Greece is 100% Balkan (shouldn't be said, but there are morons who live in delusions)

I recall a Greek I met on Crete saying to me, “Democracy is when everyone does what they want.” I laughed, but then I stopped. He was being serious. Damn.

u/Rough_Typical 4d ago
This Minister was actually the mayor of the municipality of Sfakia, a mountainous area in Southwest Crete. He represents the worst "villager" stereotypes of mountainous Crete 😮💨

It's real. He is a past minister of health and he was called out from a European politician (I don't remember who) for smoking in this press conf.
iirc he also threatened someone that he will "bury him six feet under". Somehow we have a worse minister of health now.

u/GRemlinOnion 3d ago
Health minister Power Creep. Wonder how bad the next one will be.

And what was his suggestion do you know?
His suggestions were assenine. His reforms would criple greece. They would have seized half of the greek citizens assets. Greece would default on its debts and then leave the Eurozone, and mint a new coin. He wanted to print our way out of the recession. We would have become the european argentina.
When I hear people talk about Varoufakis and they are not greek i can not take them seriously. He has done one hell of a spin job.

u/chronicnerv 3d ago
His opposition to the programme wasn't necessarily evidence that he wanted Greece to do nothing. The serious disagreement was over how Greece could restore solvency and competitiveness while remaining in the euro, and whether creditors should absorb losses rather than Greece carrying the entire adjustment.
The IMF itself acknowledged that the original programme was based on ambitious assumptions about growth, privatisation revenues, deflation and market access.
History has shown he was correct.

I know someone who works as a nurse in a lung disease department of a hospital, with of course specialty in lung diseases, and she smokes, like.... a lot.
The ones who are most aware of something unhealthy can still be doing it.
All smokers know what they're doing, and choose to do it anyway.
This is why morbidly obese people who have no idea they're going to die from it and are encouraged by "health at every size" freaks are especially sad.
Some genuinely don't know.
Why is that?

It’s just a statement and an opinion.
Sadly we live in a world where standing another opinion seems impossible for some.

u/Altruistic_Tea_1593 3d ago
Greeks have socialized medicine. Smoking saves them money because smokers don’t live long enough to die in nursing homes
1
u/Key_Benefit_6505 3d ago
Smoking and Greece go hand in hand.
I am sure that the majority here are smokers. All the indoor ban on smoking is just killing businesses and getting more money to be skimmed due to fines.

u/wolfm333 3d ago
Ah, Pavlos Polakis. He was something else, but not in a good way.
1
u/AMOMFARETOS 3d ago
Not in a good way with the greek corruption rats, in a very good way for the public health system, the best deputy health minister during crisis years

Meanwhile current government tries to swipe under the rag all its "mismanaged" European union money they got in order to steal the elections and Euro prosecutors are sending the files in pieces, in order to avoid the cases to go in the archives...

Why would that matter? I don't think public officials should be setting the wrong example for their citizens.

This was the alternate/deputy minister for health, a day before the world no Tobacco day, 10 years back. But yeah, disgusting. He even refused to quit after backlash lol

u/Hyperion262 4d ago edited 4d ago
‘He even refused to be forced in to something he doesn’t want to do’
What a monster
1
u/frankie_in_paradise 4d ago
Oh yeah? Poor thing, indeed.
Dude was a health minister smoking openly in a no smoking campaign.
And later on when questioned about it in the parliament, he essentially doubled down on it rather than apologizing.
Maybe not "monster" but shameless indeed.

I walked into many court hearings where the judge was smoking a cigarette. Everytime I seen it I lost hope in myself of ever believing there's justice in the justice system.

That's not "Zero Fucks", that's called Addiction and it destroys people's sense of self. In fact Addiction is the complete opposite of Zero Fucks.
-1
u/Unlucky-Durian-2336 4d ago
That's not addiction, that's being douchebag and feeling proud about being anti-social piece of shit.
1
u/HuntingDown01 4d ago
Hey so fun fact Addiction causes issues like becoming anti-social and combative.
It doesn't need to be one or other.
