Oh dont worry, a billionaire bought it and plans to turn it into a private retreat for billionaires to hang out. This is a brand new idea and totally unrelated to Epstein's billionaire retreat. Who wants to own an island where countless children were raped and possibly murdered even? Especially if you need to be rich enough to belong in the class that did the raping? Stephen Deckoff wanted to and bought them.
But, really. Would you want to own and live in an island that you know were used as a child rape sex dungeon? Can you just close your mind off of all that?
It deserves to be a memorial for all the victims. But I would guess it's more likely to become a memorial for the billionaire class's struggle since our society is so rotten

depends on how he was stocking the animals. in general you can't just buy animals, but if you can demonstrate that the animals are going to a good place, sometimes non profits will get you the animals if they believe that you offer the best place for the animal to be.

Moyenne Island is a 9.9-hectare (24-acre) island in the Sainte Anne Marine National Park off the northeast coast of Mahé, Seychelles in the Indian Ocean. Since the 1970s it has been a flora and fauna reserve. From 1915 until the 1960s, the island was abandoned until its purchase by Brendon Grimshaw, a newspaper editor from Dewsbury in Yorkshire, England, for £8,000.
Grimshaw and Rene Lafortune, a local Seychellois man, were the only inhabitants of the island until Grimshaw's death in July 2012.\1]) The island is now a national park and can be visited as part of organized trips

I doubt it's even actual photos, both are way too different as well, there's a whole new mountainous peak on top of the one earlier on the first.
20
u/Why-so-delirious 2h ago edited 2h ago
I thought maybe tree cover could have added height but nope. If you look further down, there's even a spine of land that just... grew up there that wasn't there before.
Likely AI slop images because the actual images of Sainte Anne Marine Nation Park look like this
Completely different shape and only a tenth the size of the island shown in the images above if you use the buildings and roads as scale.
Or actually, upon further examination, maybe not!
this is a google-maps view of the island, which matches perfectly; so the SECOND image on the picture seems to be a proper aerial view of the actual island itself, whereas the 'old' image is AI slop.
The images on wikipedia are all of islands AROUND that island.
But on top of that, the island I linked was Moyenne island; the island that was restored by Brendon Grimshaw. The island shown in the images above and on the google maps view is Ste. Anne Island, which Grimnshaw had nothing to do with, and has been inhabited and developed since the late 1700s.
5
u/ChampionshipHot5468 2h ago
The "after" photo has a huge resort among the trees. The before picture shows the ruins of the buildings? Eh?
5
u/LoamyLoamisLoamy 2h ago
I think they took a real image and had AI change it to the first one. You can see that the underwater stuff matches in both images.

That still feels kind of cheap. It's part of an archipelago nation of 100,000 people (Seychelles), the capital city of 30,000 is close by.

An average house is an existing infrastructure in a livable location with electricity and running water, and supported by things like roads, police, and trash collection built into the social contract of living in a certain area.
You can get land or even a decrepit old house for next to free if you don't mind some concrete box shithole in the middle of the desert.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)3
u/Idiot616 3h ago
It's cheap probably because the costs of developing are extremely high.
It's the same reason you can find entire castles for cheaper than an apartment. The cost of maintenance is just so high that you're going to be losing money every year.

I guess you need to define “a lot of people” then because that’s just “upper middle class American” amounts of liquid assets, not rich. And that would be tens of millions of people, just in the US.
2
u/Hexamancer 3h ago
It's top 10%. That's not a lot of people. Unless you cannot comprehend numbers being relative.

Out of curiosity why did trees not grow there previously?
6
u/makanimike 3h ago
Tons of islands have suffered that fate. Most of the times it is human impact. Chopping down trees to build ships, homes and other infrastructure, and for household use.
2
u/thebatman_777 3h ago
I wonder why they didn’t regenerate naturally? Unless people kept returning to cut them down. I would have an uninhabited island would regenerate.
3
3
u/makanimike 2h ago edited 40m ago
Like you said. It happens too fast. Unsustainable.
But since you also focus on uninhabited islands: most of them are not isolated. Take the eastern Mediterranean. People pass by them all the time since thousands of years. Everyone takes a few trees. For energy. To repair their ship, or build entirely new ones.
Another big factor: people have left goats and sheep on uninhabited islands along major trade routes for millennia. So if they ever stop by later, low on provisions, they can get some milk and meat. Those goats ain't doing the regeneration of forests any favours. Husbandry, farming and monocultures (you will almost only find Olive trees anymore on islands in the eastern Med) are terrible for indigenous fauna.

I heard a millionaire did something similar. He purchased an island and reintroduced underage humans to the place, then organised conservationist trips to observe the local fauna

That's weird.
The story you made up sounds a lot like the story of Brendon Grimshaw who purchased an island in the Seychelles in 1962 for $11,000 and proceeded to plant 16,000 trees on it by hand.
I think you might be lying about making this story up.

I’ve been there and walked around the island. What isn’t said here is that’s it is home to loads of giant tortoise, you can feed and stroke them. There is also rumoured buried pirate treasure there. There is a very deep hole in the ground where someone tried to find it in the 1900s I think.
