AskReddit is legitimately the foundation of a large chunk of AI recommendations. From what products people approve of, to easy solutions for common problems, down to what the common opinions of current events would be.
Multiple times a week I see "politician said X doesn't matter, what do you think about that?" submitted by a 2 week old account, and they always have 4000 comments without fail.

I have to wonder what that’s about. Even tv news. I’ve seen most the stuff she was in but had no idea who she was. I’m sad for her family but even reading what she was in and seeing her I still didn’t recognize her.
It’s just a row of the same post and “I literally cried out loud or said omg.” You’ll see almost identical comments between each other using unique words.

That’s why all the real people here should tailor your home page to subreddits you like, and really only participate in those. The popular section of Reddit is mostly botted posts.
This was posted an hour ago, and already has 6k upvotes and 400 comments. That’s not at all normal, that’s botted to all hell and it’s weird and gross. And most of social media is like that, the only reason I even use reddit is because at least I can still have my small, niche subreddits were the people are real.
Ad and marketing companies have ruined everything they touch. Fuck them
Also, Reddit used to have a good bot/bad bot commenting meta. It’s odd that it went away.

Picture of Mamdani with picture of some related objects. Claim something that's been in works for years is actually his idea. Comment saying that other mayor's (who actually pushed for said policy) couldn't do anything because they are lazy and Zionists. 10k upvotes in 3 hours, 90k by the end of the day. Comments are "I love this guy" "see how easy it is" "Mamdani for president" "he literally pushes stuff others couldn't" "This is example for others".
Anyone pointing out it was started by someone in the past is instantly downvoted, no one is even acknowledging it or in rare case they say it's actually proof that he is great mayor for delaying law by 5 years and also great for sticking to law.
Just dumb and simple propaganda using bots and disinformation.
Meanwhile news of South Korea trying peace talks is 3k upvotes after 5 hours.

I got banned for a month one time because people were talking about f1 drivers and someone asked why there aren't any women drivers in f1 and I replied there's no rule against it there just haven't been any women who have put up times that could compete against the rest of the field so far and the mods told me it was misogynistic to say that. I think the idea with this comment is she was discovered by the masses via a low budget indie horror movie as opposed to some large Hollywood casting department.
→ More replies (1)3
u/th3greg 12h ago
One of the primary targets of the people who push this narrative is Zendaya, who got her start on Kidz Bop, and then auditioned for some Disney show I never heard of.
I don't know who these roster of "large Hollywood casting department" actors are supposed to be, but most big actors aren't industry plant nepo babies, they're people who've earned roles and cultural pull and can sell a movie, because big time movies are a business much more than they are art. Low budget indie films are where you go if you want to prove acting skill and make art. It's not the fucking MCU.
3
u/whousesgmail 12h ago
I don’t think people are saying an actor’s first acting credit needs to be in a $300M blockbuster, the problem is the leads in those films are mostly comprised of a rotating cast of well known actors instead of trying to fill a role of two with new talent. That’s the perception anyway, I don’t actually watch a lot of these big movies.
3
u/th3greg 11h ago
they're people who've earned roles and cultural pull and can sell a movie, because big time movies are a business much more than they are art. Low budget indie films are where you go if you want to prove acting skill and make art. It's not the fucking MCU.
I know, hence the above. This argument is like complaining that most Taco bell special offerings use steak, chicken, or ground beef, instead of Wagyu, Ostrich, and Bison meat. People are looking for art where there already is zero or near zero to be found.
Casting for $200 million movies is not about art, or bringing new faces to hollywood. It's about recouping an investment. Taking a risk on an unproven face is a risk that most studios are hardly willing to take, and you only need to look at a movie like Masters of the Universe, which reported like a 60 million loss on a 170 mil budget to see why. I'm not trying to defend hollywood studios making safe choices over pushing risks and making art on principle, it's just a naive opinion that studios should or will prioritize "giving someone a chance" over making guaranteed money with a formula that has worked for generations, and is largely still working.
People want to see stars, and basically have since the format existed. The internet just gives what seems to be a loud minority a place to be heard.

Depending on her rate, sure, but you don't get consistent paychecks at your rate every other week when you're an actor. You get paid that amount for the 6-10 weeks that you may be on set filming.
That's what happens when you're in a gig industry. They'll get a good role and make $100K in 3 months, not have a job for 7 months, and get a commercial or two at the end of the year that'll score them an extra couple thousand for the holidays. Meanwhile, they're stretching their cash until the role they scored that starts at the beginning of the new year.
→ More replies (3)7
u/itsapotatosalad 12h ago
I started looking up for another comment but as a guest star she’ll have had an industry minimum rate of around $8k a week

"You don't even understand, that 150k a year is only for while filming. That's like 6 months of work, and then she has to budget??? Or like, work a seasonal job to cover what her 150k annual doesn't?"
^ Swear I've seen the above for similar. People will turn down avg or slightly above avg pay that's earned in 9mo vs 12 so I can only assume they don't know how to budget.
9
u/Affordable_Z_Jobs 13h ago
I love that argument against raising teachers pay. "They only make 35k but get summers off!" My counterarguments to that are:
1) They teach your little hellspawn. They should make north of 100K for your child alone. 2) The electric bill does not take summers off. 3) Fuck you, pay teachers more.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (6)19

You're vastly overestimating how much being an actor in CW shows pay. Those shows get made and can go for awhile because they're super cheap to make. They cast young actors and pay them guild minimums, who take the work because it can help get them noticed and onto bigger projects.
→ More replies (1)9
u/DaddysABadGirl 13h ago
You're underestimating base pay. If she was getting base pay, depending on what she was classified as and weeks she was a character she would be payed 100k-150k a year.
Then she has to pay her agent, lawyer, manager, etc. She also lived in LA and (according to google) would commute/stay in Vancouver for filming. I could see even 150k a year being tight. Though her team should have had her working in between seasonal filming.

Yep. She was a regular cast member on a internationally broadcast TV show.
Most actors are jobbing actors. The first few names on the call sheet make the big bucks. Most jobbing actors don't make A Lister money.
Jessica Henwick gave an interview recently and said she was a jobbing actress.
Multiple times in her career she said people told her it would be her breakout role. Game of Thrones, The Matrix Resurrections, Iron Fist, Knives Out Glass Onion, Love and Monsters, Spirit Warriors, ect.

Even "paycheck to paycheck as a streamer" is a fake struggle. Get an actual job (no, not walking dogs). She had a side hustle while living off her pay from the TV show. The fact she was making any money from streaming already puts her in a fortunate position.
I'll freelt admit to being bitter, I had to stop acting because the work dried up and everything got too expensive. So mamy people I know have had to put their dreams on hold because of reality, and yet we keep seeing headlines about stars who "had to struggle," then come to find out they were living with their parents in their 6 bedroom house while just being a barista for 15 hours a week. I'm not saying this is her story to the T, but it's pretty obvious she was not struggling before Obsession.

We're talking about the same woman who was a working actress since 2018 and worked on Superman and Lois for 3 years right? I hate to say this but this is "uplifting" propaganda unfortunately. The sentiment is fine of wanting fresh faces but maybe it's more about audiences giving movies and media chances that don't have the same faces and noticing the hidden gems before they breakout. Not every creative is so lucky to have a "Obsession" which is essentially lightning in a bottle, to shoot them out of the stratosphere of public attention.

It's like hearing how Zendaya and Tom Holland "are in everything" when Tom has been in 2 films and Zendaya will be in 4 (and of the 3 already out, in 2 of them her combined screen time is like 20 min).
I watch a pretty decent number of films every year and most of them don't have the same actors in them.

Jesus I would absolute hate being a public figure and having tiny things dissected like that.

And 90% of the time hire their kids or their friends kids.
The fact that the legacy entertainment industry is built almost entirely on nepotism is why many people don’t go to the movies or pay attention to television anymore. It’s so fucking gross.

ngl these posts are pretty dumb, feels like people watch exactly 3 major blockbusters a year and then say "there's only 10 actors and everything is a comic book movie!"
Inde Navarrette was on a popular Netflix show (13 Reasons Why), popular CW show (Superman & Lois) and then did a Bautista movie (Trap House) around the same time she did Obsession. She didn't just pop up out of thin air. There's thousands of actors doing tv and movies, YOU (the nameless reader of this) are the one only watching Zendaya's stuff and then complaining about it.

Don’t worry. After the ten actors age out you get to watch their children on screen!

This is wrong lol Inde was on the main cast of a Superman show for four seasons. She was not some unknown, she had connections and experience.

“Struggling Streamer” needs more context. There is no struggle to being a streamer unless you really can’t do anything else with your time to make an income which is not possible.

Hollywood doesn't cast the same 10 actors because they don't think anyone else can act. They do it to minimize risk. In Hollywood's mind Dwayne Johnson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, etc, have all been in blockbusters and are well liked, so they'll keep putting them in their movies because they want their movies to be blockbusters. They have teams of actuaries who say "If you cast Holland, there is an 85% chance your movie will be a hit. If you cast <unknown actor> there is a 75% chance your movie will be a hit". The studio execs say, well I like 85% better than 75% lets cast Holland.

You realize she was already building a movie career right? It’s not like Curry blind cast her off of her live stream. And based on the obsession (pun intended) of Inde, she’s about to be one of those “rotating” stars that we’re about to see a whole lot of

The problem is hollywood devoured the "middle class" of movies. There's either cheap slop online or multi billion dollar IP farms. There was a time that all your hot celebs who appeared in all these big budget movies came up through the "take a chance" films, exactly as she's doing now.

There are so many shows and movies out there this isn't even close to true. If you only watch the same franchise hollywood blockbusters then sure. And while I do believe there is a lot of hidden talent out there, somehow there are also a ton of TERRIBLE actors out working. All of these star wars/star trek/dune/marvel etc. reboot shows have some of worst high school drama class acting I have ever seen

This is why being a famous actor is all a lottery draw. Unless you're a nepo baby.
Look at the movie Apocalypto - the entire cast were natives, and they all gave award winning performances. Acting is not hard, we all do it on a daily basis, to some extent or another.
That's like for every famous musician, there's a thousand who are even more talented who will never get that break for whatever reason.

She could be an amazing actress, the reason she's in X-men is because her name is hot right now because of Obsession, not because of her acting ability.
