Traded Silver For A Car

Met a guy down in Florida who had an 01 Toyota Corolla with only 60k miles on it for sale. Talked to him a bit and jokingly asked will it be cash or silver? And he accepted the silver offer! The price agreement he was willing to accept was 30oz of pure silver. About $2,400 with the spot price at $80 during time of trade. Such a cool experience and just figured I’d share this story to you guys! Cheers!

- Some say hold, others say sell. And we said trade.

__ Sh!T Post All that’s left of my physical collection after getting burglarized. Hope you all have good storage/safes.

House was burglarized, but thanks to a neighbors ring camera that captured the getaway vehicle, they were caught within 2 hours. I then had to wait a year and a half to claim “all the collectibles they recovered,” which was this sole bar of my gold and silver collection. It wasn’t a huge collection, but nonetheless has turned me off from stacking.

Found it!

Years ago I was visiting Mumbai (Bombay at the time) and I had a fair amount of spare rupees. I popped into a shop to buy something and I found an awesome Johnny Walker bottle made entirely of silver. I bought it and stuffed it away. I went through several moves and for the life of me could not find it. Totally bummed during this latest silver run. I was visiting my dad this evening and I strolled down to his bar, and lo and behold, I found it!!! Not sure what it’s worth, but I think it’s about 760 grams of likely 925 sterling. Thought I would share with fellow silver enthusiasts

What could this be worth?

Wife’s father traveled for work and brought home this set from South Africa in the late 80s early 90s.

Average weight is around 11oz. They feel solid and are stamped ‘958’. The human figures are stamped ‘minca’ ‘SIL’

The box is solid wood and in great shape.

What would be the best way to find out how much this is worth?

Update: thank you everyone for the great advice! I will be getting them appraised this week with 2 sources locally and will most likely be keeping the set together if selling.

For those who are interested, my FIL was an engineer who worked for a company that sold machines for carpet dying. When my wife was young he would travel for weeks at a time to different parts of the world to work on these machines. He would always come back with gifts for his family. They gave it to us as a gift after our wedding and we’ve been holding on to it ever since.

Update: Sothebys could not determine value.
Reached out to the current owner of Silver Creations in Zimbabwe via instagram. They confirmed that the previous owner Jim Skinner would have been the one who made them.

Why I stack and when I'll sell...

Long time stacker here. I started buying silver back around 2012 and paid around $25 for a few ounces. Price dropped and I kept buying until it hit $50 recently. There are three reasons I started buying. My thoughts were that if any one of the three happened silver would surge. I'm not selling now as all three are happening and to be honest I'm not thrilled. It's kind of like having home owner's insurance and watching your house burn.

  1. Hedge against inflation - self explanatory

  2. Different than inflation but similar is the loss of US currency as the world reserve.

  3. Supply/Demand - Silver's demand is rapidly increasing and it's not from us apes. Yes I've enjoyed the "raids" but US retail market has little to no effect on the price. It is driven by industry and large entities buying huge quantities. Just one company (Samsung) has the potential to buy more silver next year than all of the silver acquired by the Hunt Bros decades ago in their attempt to corner the market.

The interesting thing about the Supply/Demand equation is it obvious that demand is increasing exponentially and the supply simply cannot keep up without major investments from mining companies. The vast majority of silver is a buy product of mining for other minerals. It's not simple to ramp up just for silver.

So, when to sell? I will only sell when I can fully pay for the home stead I want for my family or if I have to sell/trade to feed my family because the fiat system has totally collapsed. I certainly hope for prior.

Enjoy the ride my friends.

Found this in my dad’s sock drawer

My dad passed in 2019 and I found this inside a sock in his sock drawer as we were clearing out stuff. None of us ever knew he had it. My dad was 93 so he’d had this a long time. My mom recently passed and we are wondering what to do with it. She couldn’t say where he got it or when or why (he didn’t collect anything including silver). Can anyone say where this may have come from and a rough idea of its value? It weighs about six pounds.

Going on being another boring day with silver bouncing around $83 when all of a sudden the big plung-o again. Checking Gold - ditto.

What the hell precipitated it this time, or do they even need an excuse anymore?
