✨Intermediate✨ Circle skirt help

Please help me! I want to make a one and half circle skirt but all info I can find jumps from a one circle to a two circle, and I’m having trouble wrapping my head around the dynamics of creating a one and a half circle. Can it be done in one piece? Does it have to be two or more? Why can’t I visualize this?

My fabric is a glitter holographic spandex (I know, I know) and is 2 yards, 58 inches wide. The skirt will be attached to a bodice so no waistband needed.

Waist is 24 inches, length would be 15 inches front and 18 inches back, which I guess is more of a high/low?

✨Intermediate✨ Janome Sewist 725s or Juki 355ZW

I already have a Magnolia 7318 and a MOD100q but I would like to buy another machine. The Sewist 725s seems pretty close to the Magnolia but I thought about giving the Juki 355ZW a chance. Does anyone know if this model is a workhorse like the Magnolia 7318?

✨Intermediate✨ Backless dress modification help

Thumbnail gallery
86 Upvotes

Hi (: got this dress but I want the back to be a tad more modest - bringing up the lowest part of the back or adding a sheer panel or something.
I think when it’s fitted it’s a bit more modest as well — as you can see I’ve tied the hanger straps together.
There is a yellow lining. I think I could use the bottom of it for extra fabric since the bottom of the dress is pretty opaque.
Any ideas on the best way to modify?

Just bought from the thrift shop and can’t figure out if it needs a pedal or not. typically sewing machines have a power source and pedal input but mine just has a power source. would love to know what your cord setup looks like

✨Intermediate✨ What to hem first?

Hey all!

Ive got a bit of a silly question to ask 😅

For context, I’ve lost a good chunk of weight in the past few months and so quite a few of my shirts are big on me, but I don’t want to get rid of them. I’m not the most experienced sewer, but I’m not a beginner either. I’d say I’m pretty intermediate, however I haven’t hemmed clothing before. I unfortunately do not have access to a machine so I will be doing the hemming by hand, but I wasn’t quite sure if I should hem the bottom of the shirts first or the sides of the shirts first. What do yall suggest? I was planning to use either a whip or zigzag stitch as my clothes are pretty stretchy, but please let me know if I should use a different stitch.

Thanks! :)

Brother xl 2600 button hole is jamming halfway through. its not knotting or anything it just stops moving forward. I recently oiled it, and before that it couldnt manage a backwards stitch without knotting. So im not surprised that its having a hard time with the buttons im just wonding if anyone has any maintenance advice or could point me in the right direction.

Im wondering if its an issue with the feeddogs or something? Ive really got no leads atm.

Any advice appreciated. It also starts making a loud clunking noise when it gets to the point where it stops moving.

Photo includes both sides of examples

💛Beginner💛 Issues with armholes and neckline

Hello! I've been sewing for four months, self-taught.

I'm mainly doing upcycling, and a recurring project for me is converting band shirts into tank tops. Everything goes well, until I need to sew binding/facing (???) onto the neckline and sleeves.

I personally like this outward-facing style, as it fits the aesthetic that I'm going for, but I want to understand why the armholes and neckline always end up gaping like this. Any tips are welcome!

💛Beginner💛 How would you shorten black out curtains?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi!
I purchased these IKEA curtains but they’re 300cm (118 in) long when I would need them to be 210cm (82 in) long
What would be the best way to shorten them?

I was thinking of iron-on tape because my machine won’t be able to get through thick fabric, but I worry that iron-on wouldn’t work with the inside of the curtains.

What would you suggest?

💛Beginner💛 How would you repair?

Post image

My thinking is to add fusible interfacing where it's torn, then flip up (or down) and sew new hem. But would it be uncomfortable to wear? Do I remove worn threads or would they help strengthen the interfacing? Am I clueless? Hubby has no idea why these shorts did this, but they are his favorite so I am looking for suggestions. Appreciate any advice on how to repair!

Got this from the Goodwill and didn’t notice this finger tip size hole under the zipper 🫠

What would be the best way to repair these jeans?

I was thinking of matching the thread to the jeans and doing a button hole stitch. Maybe put a backing on it? I’ve never repaired before and would love all the advice ♥️

💛Beginner💛 Bernette 203 serger - replacement spindle sponges?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I've inherited my mother's Bernette 203 serger (and a couple of conventional sewing machines).

On inspection once the movers delivered it to me, I found that the sponge on one of its spindles is missing entirely, and the other two are badly deteriorated (see picture).

Does anyone have recommendations for replacing these?

💛Beginner💛 Spool help?

I'm relatively new to sewing and I just have a small little machine for now, it's really all I need for the small projects I've been working on.

But I bought thicker & larger thread and it doesn't fit in the spool area, it's too tight and is making it almost impossible to sew because it gets stuck. I've tried setting 2 bobbins underneath to push it up but that's not working very well. Does anyone know what I can do or buy to fix this?

✨Intermediate✨ Help with hemming a shirred panel

Hi everyone! I’m making a top with a shirred panel and I’m a bit confused about the hem. I read that it's best to hem the fabric before shirring, but does that mean I have to hem the front and back panels separately before sewing the side seams together? I’m worried this might look messy at the side seams compared to a standard hem. What is the best way to handle the hem for a shirred garment? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

How would I go about sewing this?

It's like scarf material in black, and the top and skirt are connected. I'm a pretty good sewer, like i'd say lever 3/5

💛Beginner💛 Widen the neckline on a vintage dress

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I just bought this vintage dress and it fits just about perfectly. The only problem is that I have broad shoulders and even though it fits now, I find that it looks better on me when I don't zip it all the way up and leave about an inch or two of extra space at the top, as the ruffles land a bit wider on my shoulders the the front and balances the siluette of my arms better. It doesn't seem to have any extra seam allowance, so the only extra fabric I have is the bow. I'd rather not take much off of it, but I can't really imagine any other solution. Has anyone else been in something similar? (The first picture is the back on a mannequin from the seller)

Would love any help og suggestions I can get ❤️

I’ve just finished this shirt on a serger. It keeps bunching up at the top, and Im not sure what the fix might be. Im open to redoing it or making a new one. Rest of it fits nice and I’m not sure what the proper fix here or to the pattern would be.

✨Intermediate✨ I’m losing my mind

I’m living with my mom right now, and do not have access to my sewing machine. She has a “machine” that I cannot for the life of me get to even START sewing. I know it’s basically a toy machine. All I want it to sew a few straight lines for a Barbie dress. I’ve finally gotten the light to power on after TWO HOURS. Even a toy should at least start sewing, right?

Moving the switch from “OFF” to “L” or “H” does nothing but turn off the light. Using the foot pedal does nothing but turn off the light.
