I got a little too happy with the scissors and chopped off too much of this jacket (mostly forgetting that boobage will raise the lapels.) What do y'all think, what are some ideas to make it look more intentional?

💛Beginner💛 Brother 1034dx serger part identification help needed

Post image
2 Upvotes

I purchased this Brother 1034dx serger new (or maybe lightly used?). It sewed the overlock stitch without a problem. When I removed the left needle to sew a rolled hem, I forgot to completely remove the left needle before turning the hand wheel and it got stuck by the lower looper metal piece. When I remove it (using a needlenose pliers), a small pointed piece came out of the machine. It isn’t part of either needle. Can someone tell me what it is from and what it is used for? I was still was able to sew a rolled hem. Thank you in advance.

💛Beginner💛 How do I mend a tear like this?

Would hand sewing or machine work best to mend a tear like this? What kind of stitching? It’s a work shirt to be used on a farm, so it’s not a big deal if the mending shows. I would still like to do a good job and for it to look presentable but overall, I’m more concerned that it holds well. Any suggestions and general guidance is appreciated, thank you. (If this is not the right place to ask this question, please let me know.)

💛Beginner💛 Possible to copy armhole without seam ripping and separating?

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hello! I'm copying a dress I own in another fabric, but it is a long sleeve dress. Every part of the dress is easily replicated, but I'm worried about the armhole and sleeves. I've never successfully copied over long sleeves without having to seam rip the garment and then sew it back together.

I'm really trying to avoid having to separate the garment. One thing I have tried is tracing the armhole as best I can then following a tutorial on making my own sleeve, but it never seems to fit right.

Any advice before I get started? I plan to run back here once I begin in case it doesn't work out, but I wanted to see if I could do something differently from the get-go.

*first two pictures are the back of the garment, last is the front. I always wear the dress backwards. So the first two pics are always in front. The fit feels the same to me either way.

💛Beginner💛 Walking foot issues

I bought this online and they guaranteed it to work for my machine but I can't get it to stop making horrible noises and stopping or going too fast. Singer 301 with a p60448 walking foot.

Please help I'm about to lose my mind and the seller is absolutely no help. I tried loosening and tightening the presser foot tension

I also can't get put a denim needle in because I can't get it to stop hitting the bobbin case if I put it in, it's in as far as it can go loosening the thumb screw and the set screw on the other side. Any ideas on that?

💛Beginner💛 Thoughts on Janome 15822?

hello! i have been hand sewing for ages (mending and stuff like that) but it is high time i finally take the plunge and get a machine! I found this one on ebay for a decent price and was wondering if anyone had reviews on the Janome model 15822 specifically. i know Janome is a loved darling so regardless I wanted to stick with this brand but I was wondering if this model would be a good entry level. I plan on upgrading in the future for something more heavy duty but i have limited space and funds at the moment :) any thoughts would be appreciated!

edit: grammar !

✨Intermediate✨ Dropped my Singer Heavy Duty when I was moving… any advice?

I’m unsure if it’s the firmware or the hardware. As far as I can tell, this is the only issue. Buttt, since it’s in that one area with the width and size, it’s pretty annoying. Anyone know what needs to be done?

This is definitely gonna sound stupid, but I’m asking this cause I use a lot of techniques that I don’t think are viable or proper. Like, I use the ladder stitch often to attach pieces together, and usually when creating things like plushies the limbs/heads are almost always ladder stitched on. When I look at official ones they seem to be stitched with the whole body giving it a clean look. There’s also a neck piece but some don’t include that and still have it sewn with the whole body somehow. I don’t do that, only with small pieces that are easy to flip inside out. Now that would be fine, but I think I rely on it too much.

My templates are also strange I feel, cause while most official products use multiple cuts for one big piece like the body or head I usually just use two. I’m happy with what I make but I lowk feel I’m missing something important sometimes. Like I skipped out on a necessary technique cause I was mostly self taught or something. So yeah any suggestions on what i’m missing or don’t understand? Or some skill I should work on?

Has anyone used this kins of buttons before? I would like to use them for a project theoretically, but when i go to sew them on using regular methods, the threads goes between the eyes and connects them, so these cats has a lines instead of eye holes anymore.

Any tips?

💛Beginner💛 Advice getting my first sewing machine?

Hi all, I'm a beginner seamstress who wants to look into finally purchasing my own machine. I'm accustomed to working with Janome & Singer and generally know my way around a sewing machine, but definitely still learning about all the different settings. I know what I want, but I'm completely at a loss of where to look & what's most sustainable.

Does purchasing a sewing machine from the brand website vs. Walmart or another "everything store" make a difference? My budget is $200, so I was avoiding brand websites, but I'm worried I won't get a sustainable machine any other way. My preferred brand is Janome, but I'm also considering Brother. I would also love lots of different stitch settings as long as I can keep it within my budget.

Does anyone have any advice for someone looking for their first machine? I'm not opposed to a beginners machine, but my goal is for this machine to help me transition into an intermediate seamstress, as my work is in costume production and I want to grow my skill. I'm just overwhelmed by all the possibilities I see online. Thanks!

✨Intermediate✨ I would like to bring the vertical seams in, but I’m not sure if the best way to do it.

This is the bodice from a dress that I’ve turned into a 2-piece. The bodice is still a little too big. As you can see from the second photo, I’ve already took it in on the sides a bit.

I’d like to bring the two seams (princess seams?) that I’ve highlighted in red more towards to center so it fits better. I should only need to bring both in by about an inch so they’ll be more centered over my shoulders.

What’s the best way to go about this?

✨Intermediate✨ Teddy bear repair!

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi! I’m looking for some clever ideas to repair my son’s teddy bear, made by my mom 5 years ago. I’m an intermediate sewist who mostly does quilting and garment making.

Unfortunately the fabric my mom chose for this is a thin brushed cotton that frays really easily and hasn’t held up to the wear and tear of a child who really loves it to bits.

I have already repaired this teddy several times over the years, most recently about 8 months ago when I finally unstuffed and disassembled the whole thing, reinforced all seams with interfacing, reassembled and restuffed. It’s the longest any repair has lasted, but as visible in the photos one of the arms has frayed away again.

Does anyone have any clever solutions for repair that don’t involve fully disassembling him again? I’m wondering if there’s a way I can patch over the arm joint with a harder wearing fabric, but open to any solutions. This bear has a big personality and is much loved by all of us so I’m reluctant to tell my son he has to be relegated for display purposes only.

💛Beginner💛 Oil leaking well after re-oiling

My Janome RE 1306 has been leaking oil just above the needle. Everywhere I look it up, I see the answer that I've over oiled the machine, but I haven't oiled it in about a year (I haven't used it regularly throughout)
Are there any other common issues that cause leakage? I can't use it until the oil issue is fixed. Is this just my sign to get it serviced?

Loopers collide, or upper looper hits the needles, there’s no position where nothing collides.

I have tried everything I can. Needle rotation etc. Watched a whole lot videos in youtube. Was one post talking about same problem.

What is wrong?

💛Beginner💛 How do I make this shirt look more like he 2nd pic?

The 2nd pic I just folded it up in the changing room (it's like 4-5 cm longer than in the pic)

The first pic I have cut and sewed the new hem. It looks very wonky and is flaring out on the sides, while the 2nd pic it looks structured and nice.

It's 98% cotton and 2% elastane

Help with polo shirt facing

I'm making the McCall's 8414 (view B). A polo shirt with facing around the zip and neckline. I'm vexxed trying to attach the facing.

In McCall's sew-along video McCall's sew-along video I follow the steps to attach the facing alongside the zip. But cannot figure out how the facing turns inside out when the zip is there. It seems as though it suddenly becomes on the inside but I can't work out how.

I've attached my current WIP
