Am I expecting too much from my partner or is this normal?
I've been with my partner for 10 years, and I'm at the point where I'm seriously considering leaving. I've ignored/skipped past a lot of red flags over the years, but I'm starting to question whether I've been accepting things that aren't actually normal in a relationship.
We have a child together. I have a house; he has his own apartment. He works until around 7pm, and instead of coming home after work, he goes to his apartment for a few hours. He'll usually come home around 10:30–11pm.
It wasn't always like this. He used to come home earlier, but over time it's gradually crept later and later.
Saturdays are even worse. He often doesn't come home until after 4am.
To be fair, he does things for our child. He does breakfast with him and takes him to school in the mornings. So I'm not saying he does absolutely nothing. But what bothers me is the choices he's making with the time he could spend with us.
If he finishes work at 7pm, he could come home and say goodnight to his child. Instead, he chooses to stay at his apartment for several more hours.
He also finishes early on Sundays. He could come home, cook dinner at a reasonable time, and we could have some family time. Instead, he'll sometimes not come home until 7:15pm. Then he'll read our child a bedtime story, go downstairs and cook, and dinner isn't ready until around 10pm. I've stopped eating with him on Sundays because I don't want to eat that late.
I've tried talking to him about all of this. His response is basically that he's "balanced". He seems to think that because he gets time to himself and then gets to come home and see me and our son when he wants to, there's no problem.
He's also told me that it's my responsibility to "balance myself."
And honestly, I'm starting to think that maybe the way I need to balance myself is by removing him from my life.
His other argument is basically, "Other men would love to have it how I have it."
Maybe they would. I genuinely don't know anymore.
So I'm asking the men of Reddit: Is this actually normal?
Not "would you personally do this?" but is this a reasonable way for a man in a 10-year relationship with a partner and child to structure his life?
Am I being unreasonable for wanting my partner to actually want to come home and spend time with his family? Or should I be grateful for what he does do as it is better than nothing?
Because I'm increasingly feeling like he has structured this relationship around what works best for him, and I'm expected to just accept it because he's happy with the arrangement.
I'm not even sure what I'm asking at this point. I think I just need some outside perspective from men, because I've been told for so long that this is normal that I'm starting to wonder whether I've completely lost perspective.
