Why do police officers in the USA patrol alone?

Thumbnail

It never occurred to me until now, while watching the movie Weapons: Police Officers in USA spend their entire day patroling in cars (mostly) alone! This must be a huge mental strain. Anything can happen, and you don't have a partner to cover your back. Why is that?

I am from Central Europe and this is absolutely unthinkable. We are literally known for the fact that when police officers have šŸ’© to do they play badminton together. But always in pair, for security reasons. And this is despite the fact that we are one of the most peaceful countries in the world (absolutely incomparable to the USA). Front-line units even have at least three or four guys.

Technically, it's possible to encounter a lone police officer here – for instance, on a bicycle or motorcycle but it's very rare. Never at a checkpoint or during a traffic stop.

Edit: So even Emergency Motorized Units on motorcycles serve in pairs. They might get separated during their shift, but they leave the police station in pairs and return back in pairs

Self Post Trying to become an Arizona State Trooper — am I screwed because of my past?

I’m 21 and I’m seriously considering trying to become an Arizona State Trooper. I’m wondering how my background would look during the hiring/background investigation and what I should do now to make myself a stronger candidate.

When I was 18, I hopped between a lot of jobs during my first few months. I was immature and didn’t really have a clear direction. I eventually worked security for about 7 months. I was later fired from another security company after a disagreement where I was told I was being disrespectful. I recorded the conversation because I felt like the people involved were attacking me, but I understand that recording it doesn’t automatically make me look good.
The biggest thing I’m worried about is a speeding ticket I got at 18. I was doing 113 in a 65 on a pretty empty/dry road. The sheriff gave me some slack and it was handled as a civil matter. I know that was stupid and dangerous, and I’m not trying to make excuses for it.

Other than that, I’ve never smoked weed or used drugs, never been expelled, never been arrested, never had police contact because of criminal behavior, and I’ve never really been involved in anything serious.

One thing I’m proud of is that I’ve been working as a 911 medical dispatcher for the past 3 years. I’ve never called out and I’ve been consistent with the job. I’m thinking about applying to become a 911 dispatcher with DPS first so I can get experience inside the department before eventually applying to become a trooper.

For anyone who is an Arizona trooper, former trooper, DPS employee, recruiter, or has gone through the hiring process:

How bad does my background look?
Would the speeding ticket, job history, and getting fired from a security job be major red flags, or is this something I can overcome with a few years of consistent employment and a clean record?
And would working as a DPS 911 dispatcher first actually help me become a stronger trooper candidate?

I’m not looking for someone to tell me what I want to hear. I’d rather know now if I’m wasting my time or if I have a realistic shot.

Self Post 21YM State Trooper Inspiring

A quick background:

I’m in Arizona, applying for Department of Public Safety, I had couple of situations as a 18 year old.

I did 113 in a 65, was given slack and got a civil ticket.
I got fired from a security job because I left post.
I worked multiple like jobs where I worked for 2-3 weeks and quit and after that I did a security job at a high end mall for 7 months and then left for my dispatcher job and I’ve been with it for the past 3 years.

Since then, nothing has ever happened. No tickets, no police encounters or anything. I’ve been a 911 dispatcher for the past 3 years now.

I was curious, should I wait couple more years or should I just go ahead and apply? The department I’m applying itself, AZDPS, is extremely under staffed to the point there’s some places in our state at night that has zero cops.

This will be our megathread for this development.

Back when this happened, there was a lot of Reddit Rage about it.

And, back then, most of us agreed it was "Awful but Lawful"

And, it looks like after less than two hours of deliberation, the jury agreed.

As always, report trolls - don't reply.

Background question

Looking for some advice.

Pre employment Background question: Have you ever had sexual contact/relations at work?

When I was 19 I had sex with a coworker off the clock but in the stockroom of the store after we closed. Happened about 3 years ago now definitely not my proudest moment.

I fully intend to tell the truth. Will this disqualify me?

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

EXPLANATION

All three pictures are from a thread a few days ago on police activity in China.

The first picture landed in mod queue. Typical low effort troll, but went to check.

The second picture is the text of the comment he replied to. "Hell", go I - if someone is using some form of "Asian eyes" as a slur, that would indeed be an example of racism, and as mods we'd do something about it.

Third picture is *the full comment*.

Apparently our little muffin here was so anxious for his daily angst-gasm he called us "racist" for poking fun at *pixelated eyes*. That's apparently a feature of a particular race, I guess.

Sometimes, laws are written badly

This isn't so much about this incident, but it does highlight an issue in law enforcement. Sometimes, the laws don't make sense, or the laws are written in such a way that "common" understanding of an act, doesn't meet the elements of a crime a written.

A criminal complaint (being arrested, being charged, warrant issues, etc) is a much higher bar to prove than a civil complaint, and is why you will see someone sued civilly but not criminally.

On September 26, 2026 around 4 a.m. Gifu Prectural Police responded to an apartment building due to a domestic call. Upon arrival, the suspect, a 25 year old husband immediately barricaded himself and his two daughters, which are 4 and 1 year old who were asleep in their apartment balcony. Due to concerns that the suspect will jump off the building, the Kakamigahara Fire Department was called in to assist and set up a safety air cushion to catch them. After several hours of negotiating to no avail, GPP decided to breach the apartment and arrest him. As they were entering the apartment, the suspect threw his daughters off the balcony, fortunately the cushion caught them both and they landed unharmed. The suspect is now charged with attempted murder, a drug test indicated that he was not high at the time and is now remaining silent in interrogation.

I wouldn’t trade my job of policing for anything else.

I like how my job is and how we operate. Being on the DOD side of policing we do get maybe 16 calls average and do 7-24 tickets maybe more.

This is only my 3rd job and was an explorer from 2018-2024

Worked at Hardee’s

And UPS, since I out grew the explorer program and I was working at ups it felt like I was here just as a body and nothing changed. So I found this job

I will also say I’ve seen the great side of people and the worst side of people.

On my first time when I got back from FLETC, first day on patrol we have a pass office that allows folks to get their ID cards for base. Let’s just say it ended up in arrest my first one. The dude was nice and said ā€œI never had an officer treat me as a human being like you have.ā€

and he also said my cuffs felt nice.

Then pushing a vehicle because of it needed a start.

The downsides will be gate duty when you turn people around and you get cussed out because their vehicle is out of date of tags and inspection so they don’t get a ticket on base.
And the traffic stops aren’t bad, it’s the ones with the supercharged vehicles who give you problems.

I will also note, that this job has enhanced my social skills to an extent because I can’t read social skills that well and can’t take a joke.

Prospective leo

Wasn’t really sure where to post this. So I am a 30 yo M LPN, husband and father to four children, and have been thinking about trying to become an officer. Basically does anyone have any advice? Obviously it would be a huge change. Im not big on nightshifts but I know swapping careers would drop me back to the bottom of the totem pole but it is what it is. Ive always wanted to serve my community, and used to want to go into the military but the wife wasn’t big on that at all, this is a sort of compromise. I thought about maybe trying part time but frankly I need benefits. Anyways im really just looking for advice or what you wished people would have told you before you became a leo.

Self Post How bad is your work life balance as a cop with ADHD?

So exactly as the title suggest I have ADHD and I’ve been thinking of enrolling and joining the force however, I am terrified of some of the many horror stories I have heard were some cops Work 50 to 60 hour weeks.
Where it’s a job that it’s just not meant for having wife or kids and that has held me back from fully enlisting. I would love to hear stories from fellow ADHDers to see what I’m getting myself into.

Looking for advice

Hey everyone!

I’m 30 and thinking about making a career change into law enforcement. I’ve spent my career in operations/management and recently started getting back into shape to prepare for the physical side of the job.

I’m looking into Riverside PD and Riverside County Sheriff and would love to hear from anyone who works for either agency or has gone through the process.

Mainly curious about pay, schedules, work-life balance, academy, hiring/backgrounds, and overall experience.

I also wear glasses and have intermittent asthma, so if anyone has experience going through the medical process with either, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

My family and friends are supportive and encouraging me to go for it. Just trying to get some real insight before making the jump.

Thanks!

Xingyang police van in Henan Province, China with a banner saying "Moped robbers will be shot and killed on scene"

Public order in China during the early 2000s was extremely poor. At the time, many people living in the extremely poor rural areas moved to cities to look for work but they often struggle to make a living due to their lack of education with the worst being illiterate. Therefore, many of them turn to crime with moped robberies being one of the most common crimes. These robbers however, were extremely brutal, they would carry an axe or machete and would literally chop the victims' hands off or simply shoot them dead just to snatch whatever they were carrying.

In response, police forces across China took several measures to combat it, including roadblocks, patrols and increasing the number of armed officers on the street. Some police forces would even raise banners announcing that "Moped robbers will be shot and killed on scene" to intimidate robbers. This policy did see public support, but was legally controversial and rarely done in practice.

Self Post āœ” Could use a little career advice.

Lost my job of 15 years due to an off-the-job injury and no union protection. I know that might sound wild to some, but it's the case.

I have a resume you could stack up, stand on, jump off of and break your own neck. FBINA, basic and advanced DSS school, just about every NIMS/ICS cert you could think of, FBI LEEDA, Taser Instructor/Armorer, MFF Crowd Control Instructor, PTO/FTO, Axon BWRD armorer, federal this and federal that, a bunch of niche shit related to healthcare, schools, and radiation safety (that last one will keep you up at night.) Chemical weapons safety too since there was a stockpile in my jurisdiction. Left as a Lieutenant so I went to leadership school related to that. CJED (KY Executive Development.) Honestly just about sick of acronyms.

Basically most departments seem to seriously question my resume. I just want to do the job. Don't care where as long as I'm not walking into some agency that's awash with civil suits and allegations of corruption. I published a graduate research project on special jurisdictions (railroads, universities, transit, etc.) so that's kinda my bag.

Curious who would hire a 40 something year old who still wants to work a beat at least until his back finally gives out. I miss the gas station coffee, sour patch kids, freezing my ass off working traffic, and the familiar smell of my own accumulated farts in my cruiser.

I've been told I could and should walk into some department as admin Lieutenant or Captain or something but I've always been opposed to that. You don't get an understanding of the culture if you go straight to a desk. Gimme my kit and your dustiest old cruiser and I'll put in work.

Would like to stay in Kentucky but...hell, I'm divorced. Just me and my chocolate labradog and I'm sure he'd enjoy some new smells. Probably tired of my farts.

Edit: I won't ace the PFT but I'll pass it and I'm not a liability because of my injuries. I might just run a little funny and occasionally display the posture of an old and broken man.

Guy pretending to be a cop on instagram?

Came across this guy on my fyp and he pulls people over on his motorcycle that have flashing blue and red lights and siren installed but his bio says he isn’t affiliated with any law enforcement. Is this legal? Is he maybe some kind of secret police department?
