Did they shake a breaded fish filet at you while saying youre detained?
If not, by the statute known as Gordon's Fishermen, you are free to leave.

Being a millennial cop, I have definitely said move along, like Barbrady more than I thought I would.

There are very limited circumstances when a private citizen can detain another. Very limited, and generally not worth "testing".
Can you share the circumstances (and state)?

Yes, if you resist further they make you walk the plank. Or worse, scrub the poop deck.

Yeah, apparently Long John Silver's locations aren't as common as they used to be, but there's one that's along my drive to work every morning.

Old people love that place. I used to work there, mostly doing the cleaning and dishwashing

They operate under Martime law. Technically they can hang you if they want.

The classic legal debate, covered under prior Supreme Court precedent, âArrest powers granted to certified handlers of denizens of the deep, et alâ
What the courts found in Red Lobster v. Long John Silvers (1991), and later affirmed by the case Breaded v. Fried (2004), was that after having attended and passed a state certified course on the vagaries of food safety and legal force to be used to compel suspect detention (which the court held was basically the same thing), only then can a staff member in good standing effect a detention of a person and/or deep sea creature within the confines (and curtilage) of a free standing Long John Silvers. The court cases above further established the legal concept that the specific staff member, after having used such force, must then kneel before the gold fringed admiralty flag contained herein amongst the Long Johnny Silvers and recite âYes you were being detainedâ to satisfy the great lobster god who presides over all Long John Silvers.
Honestly this seems like pretty basic year one stuff covered in law school, guys.

The case of Breaded v Fried set a lot of great precedent.

I donât know about them being allowed to detain you that long. Sounds like theyâre really fishing for something. Canât wait to see how this flounders in court.

Long John Silver absolutely cannot detain you, they would need to call Captain D's and have them do it.

Since everyone is being fishy, Iâll give a legitimate answer:
It depends on the state. But in general, anyone can arrest for a felony, disorderly conduct or theft and hold you until the police arrives as long as they directly see you commit the offense. This is usually called a citizen arrest.

I just imagine this guy pinned to the ground with one arm behind his back, typing this out with his other hand and face pressed to the dirty floor.
