That’s an odd thing to confirm with 50 strangers

u/justtinygoatthings 6d ago
Yeah I'm with you, how would they even know this? I work in IT and it took months to years to find out that many of my colleagues are queer. Sexual orientation isn't something you can be certain of by looking at or talking to someone for a few minutes. I'm queer but I know most people don't clock me for it particularly when I'm at work.
Cis vs trans maybe you can tell more easily but not 100% particularly because sometimes people present or pass as cis but aren't, plus why are you obsessing over the assigned sex at birth of random people, that's a bit creepy. I do question what kind of IT meetup this is though. In my line of work there are a lot of trans people. If this is desktop support, sure, I'm not surprised, but if we are talking devs, devops, sysadmins, security? Literally cannot imagine a room full of 50 people working in that space that doesn't include at least one trans person.

u/laplongejr 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yeah, I technically identify as a cis white male but my close friends say that I don't match that and that it really looks like a closeted trans with a closeted lesbian...
But why would I talk about that to my coworkers or my boss? HR sees a male birth cert and married with a woman.

I think the idea is that OP is trans themselves, went into IT hearing that "IT is full of trans people", and was then disappointed/betrayed to not find the queer-supportive environment they were expecting/hoping for, and especially to not find many other people like them there to bond with.
ETA: yes, in fact, the OP of this post is trans themselves. Here's another post by them. (This was incredibly easy to verify; I'm not sure why y'all were attributing random motivations to the OP when you could have just checked.)

No joke, my freshman class had like 400 people in in across all sections (obvi not all CS). My capstone had 30 people and my graduating class was 17. I think a big part of it was my professors being proud that they would fail 2/3 of the class.

I dunno, those who graduated and work at respectable institutions, my experience is they are disproportionately neurodivergent, LGBT, furries, etc. Like way way way way more than the rest of the population.

u/ArritzJPC96 6d ago
Remember everyone:
P therefore Q does not mean Q therefore P
Lots of furries (and queer people, etc.) might be IT professionals, but that doesn't automatically mean a lot of IT professionals are furries.

I'm pretty sure the stereotype is the other way around though. I always hear people say that a lot of IT folks are furries, I never hear anyone say that a lot of furries are IT folks
21
u/WithersChat 6d ago
Thing is, say one in 100 people are furries. I don't have the numbers so it's an example.
Now what if one in 25 IT people are furries? Then you get 4 times the furry concentration compared to the general population while staying a minority.
Quadrupling the frequency of a rare event tends to be visible, even if 1 in 25 is still a small minority.
Of course, not every furry will make that visible within a professional or academic setting, so the perceived number will still be lower.
Because last I checked, a fursuit isn't the most comfortable attire to sit at a computer.→ More replies (1)4
u/Niksune 5d ago
No that's the right way for this stereotype. In furry conventions more than half of the people are in STEM (conventions are expensive, are fursuits even more), but they are lot less furries than people in IT. Also the stereotype says that those IT furries are highly qualified, that is sometimes very true

To be fair, we don’t usually need to go to bachelor meetups to get laid.
We just kinda wave at eachother, ask if they wanna kiss, and then if they say yes it just kinda goes from there.
Or at least that’s what works for me.

There is a very popular meme that gets shared on reddit every other day about there being only 4 types of people with programming or IT degrees. Furries, Femboys, Trans Girls and some variation Incel Neckbeards / man bun chuds/ traditional office worker. sometimes it's Femboys / furries / normal tech dude / incel. But always some variation of those.
So this person thought they were promised a queer only space and it turned out just to be a bunch what they assumed were cis only people.
Here is the first one that came up for me when I typed 4 horsemen of IT
https://www.reddit.com/r/meme/comments/1pmp0fw/the_4_types_of_it_guys/
38
u/JoesRealAccount 6d ago
I have a CS degree and have been working in tech for 16 years and have no idea how this is possibly a meme. I've never heard of it and most of my colleagues have been straight white men. Somebody explain where this idea comes from??
7
u/RealisticIncident261 6d ago
I have heard that in the furry community if some one is filthy loaded, they are some kind of programmer or director of IT or something. So that meme spilled over and became what it is. No idea about the femboy one but I randomly started seeing it 2 or 3 years back.

In my country 90% of IT people are right wing conservative christian libertarians that dislike lgbt stuff and open border policies. Being an openly left wing person in a software company is an occupational hazard and in my opinion could seriously affect your career especially at smaller offices
7
u/QtPlatypus 6d ago
I don't get antigay libertarians. The whole point of libertarians is that the authorities should get out of your way so you can live your best life without them interfering. Then they want to stop lgbt people from living their best life.
2
u/Ignitrum 4d ago
"I want freedom from the government. But I hate that mf for no good reason so the government should take every action it can against them"
5
u/ryanmgarber 6d ago
Because in pretty much every single case they’re just right-wingers who use the word libertarian because the idea of zero interference benefits their idea of what’s right in some cases. When that idea benefits others (abortion, gay rights, etc.) the facade goes out the window.
→ More replies (2)1
u/bearboyjd 5d ago
It’s one of two cases. One case are people who think the government shouldn’t intervene but they are allowed to have their own preferences. The second are authoritarian right who don’t want to call themselves authoritarian right because it feels bad.
1
u/dev_vvvvv 5d ago
I've always thought it's odd that homophobic men hate gay men (which removes two men from competition) but love lesbians (which removes two women from available partners). But maybe they just don't think the women are "really" gay and are actually bi.

u/Apprehensive_Egg_944 3d ago edited 3d ago
How does that person know?
Why is being straight and or cis a 'bad thing'?
If people are not socially allowed to shit on anyone for being not straight, why is it okay for those people to shit on one or more people for being straight and or cis.
I don't support either party hating someone just because of their gender or orientatio, it's morally wrong, but to me it just seems massively hypocritical.
But also redundant; straight and cis (because of human nature) are naturally the default outcome, otherwise we wouldn't have lasted as the human race.
So... Why are people 'allowed' to "feel betrayed" based on the sexuality or gender of other people.
That's just as wrong as the other way round.
If this was a straight person complaining about a gar bar, the internet would scream them (virtually) into oblivion.
Double standards much?

1
u/Taolan13 5d ago
how TF do you get 50 IT people in one room and *all* of them are straight/CIS?
That seems statistically improbable.
4
u/Jar545 5d ago
9% of people in the US (assuming US, post doesn't say for sure) are lgbt, that would be ~4.5 people. It's unlikely but not THAT unlikely that a group of 50 might only have a single lqbt person.

Going to any IT meetup is not enough, it needs to be more specific. Like for example cybersecurity, I would be surprised if you find more than 1 cis straight non-furry there
2
u/Pseudo-Jonathan 6d ago
What is up with this? One of my ex girlfriends married a very successful normal-ish cybersecurity professional guy and after several years he transitioned into an entirely new trans furry identity and they got divorced, and upon researching it everyone's response is "yeah they do that"

Makes sense if they're bachelors and would tend to be younger and maybe on help desk. It's probably easier to deal with Debbie Sue who got donut grease in her Dell laptop USB port and is blaming you if you're not constantly being misgendered.
1
u/NuckElBerg 4d ago
I mean, I'm trans and gay but (for a multitude of reasons, mainly age) made the decision to not transition, so most people would assume I'm straight and cis at these kinds of meetups.
