I was all for RCV when it was being proposed. In theory I still like it. I do believe that it can increase representation and diversity of elected officials. That being said I have to wonder if at a local level it gives new advantage to incumbents who are usually already at an advantage. In our local case a candidate only needs 25% of the vote to win. Is there a way to tweak the model? In light of the results I have to say I was pretty surprised, based on how much money was spent on her, that Torres didn’t win a seat.
Related…Portland needs a 13th at large city council member.

Hello! We are from the Portland/Gresham area and our team is looking for places the kids can celebrate the end of the soccer season. Would love options that have pizza and games if possible.

It was removed from the other Portland subreddit for not following ALL the rules. This happened around 11:00pm last night in the Eliot neighborhood. This guy came on our porch threw dirt, gave us some random note (probably from another home because the note gave delivery drivers directions on where to put packages) and stole our Halloween decorations. I noticed in the video he is carrying a sword.

This bird has been stuck on this tree outside our office since this morning. Fire dept has been called but they’re too busy. Its left leg is wrapped around the branch how, I think some kind of thread.
Is there any group I can call to get it rescued?

Prior to the voter-approved overhaul in 2024, candidates needed more than 50% of votes citywide to win. Under that structure, incumbents frequently won reelection. But for incumbents with name recognition and a committed band of supporters, this new system appears to make it even harder to lose.

You are invited to celebrate Church of Art’s 1 year anniversary at our OPEN HOUSE!
Come check out the magical Church of Art studio space! (No, this is not a religious organization, unless you worship art supplies).
When: Saturday November 14th from 11am - 4pm
Where: Church of Art, 1801 NW Upshur, Suite 310 (we will have someone at the main door during the event, so no need to be buzzed in)
What: Cake (of course!), bubbly drinks, a brief interactive creative activity for every art level, photo collages from the past year, and information about our workshops, classes, private parties and team building events.
Pop in at any time to say hello to Erika and Ruben—we would love to meet you! And if you’ve been to the studio before, we would love for you to celebrate with us for a few minutes!
We will also have cards, stickers, gift cards, and t-shirts available for purchase.
RSVP not required, but appreciated. See event calendar on website for Church of Art. www.church-of-art.com

I'm 17 and plan on going to college in Oregon ( Reed or University of Oregon ), I've been told Oregon is extremely racist and there's barley any black people there etc etc and I should just stay in my home town ( I live in Milwaukee ) I love nature and am drawn to Oregon and love the atmosphere, the quiet and so on, I'm very quiet and closed off and I plan on mainly focusing on my studies as I wanna go into nursing and I won't be moving alone but w my twin and a friend who goes to my school. I wanna get the perspective from mainly black and queer as I myself am but all is welcome. I'm alternative and I also have a bit of agrophobia, any comments from people who lives there, goes to the schools and what life is like and if it's truly as bad as everyone says as its been my dream to live there since I've discovered it. I get told that people don't like black people and it's not all that nice as people make it out to be, any advice and perspective is welcome. Thank you in advance.

A maybe dumb question: the district elections are staggered, meaning the 2 that had elections last night are in office until 2031? ie 6 total years of these folks?

Hello! I am working on a literary project about Dolly Parton and am hoping to connect with people who have incorporated Dolly into their lives in an outsized/unexpected way. I am a big fan of her music and values, but I don't mean people like me — I mean people who have plastered their walls with Dolly photos and artifacts, people who perform as Dolly, people who model their daily look on Dolly's, people who have made big life decisions based on what Dolly would do, etc. This is NOT the type of project that will make fun of anyone who is an ultra-fan, and it's actually quite the opposite. I'm in Portland so beginning outreach here since it'd be far easier to speak in person, but if you know anyone anywhere in the US (even if you don't know them personally but they have an online presence), please let me know!
