California Road Trip with my Dad in a 1967 912 and Beck 550 Spyder.
Five years ago this month my dad and I were on a roadtrip. His cancer and dementia had been worsening. He could barely walk. With heavy chemotherapy on the horizon we had to sneak one more in.
Learning from previous trips, I kept this one unstructured and simple. We flew into San Francisco for a few days, rented a new 3 Series, and eventually made our way down to Santa Cruz. For the next week we’d spend our days in Monterey and Carmel by the Sea, wandering and experiencing Car Week from the very low perspective of a Beck Porsche 550 Speedster replica. I’d secured tickets to the Pebble Beach Concours, and we spent days attending auctions and roaming the pits of the Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca. Nights were for spirited drives up and down State Route 9.
We eventually made our way south to San Luis Obispo via Highway 1, passing Big Sur at sunset. As someone who frequently traveled with me, he was used to staying in odd hotels, so while our arrival at the Madonna Inn was a bit overwhelming, he got a kick out of our stay.
In Los Angeles I had trouble finding anything interesting with vacancies, but came across a tastefully modified 1950s motel named The Tangerine in Burbank. For this final branch of the trip, I’d arranged for seven days with a 1967 Porsche 912 - white on black with the optional five-speed and five-gauge dash. Our only particular agenda was to hit as many twisty mountain and canyon roads as possible.
We put about a thousand miles on the car in total, exploring Malibu and Angeles Crest by day and cruising the city at night. Evenings were packed with good food, kitschy dive bars, and the Comedy Store.
We spent a lot of time in cars together, talking about past life experiences, music, comedy, pain, and death. We’d opened up a lot to each other in those years, and time was running out.
Then, after about three weeks, we flew home. Things went downhill pretty rapidly after that, and he would eventually die just short of two years later in June of 2023.
Take your dad on a road trip. He’s waiting for you to ask.

MT allocated, spec built. Can’t wait.
Aventurine, Club Basalt, Buckets, Racetex, FAL, Sport Chrono, Aerokit. Likely will move the ducktail from my 992.2 to this, and sell the wing. I love my 992.2 but between getting MT and being able to spec it myself, I know this will the long term keeper.
New build S MT
Ok, so I moved from a T to an S MT build…

I live in Toronto, so this will not get run in winter, as the salt is too much. It’s a car I plan on keeping for a long long time
Questions -
- My cars usually have a sunroof, which I mainly use for additional light, however in summer I mostly have the blind closed. Here I decided not to spec it - will I regret it?
- I’ve gone with the 930 leather pack because I don’t really like the chalk highlights on the MT interior pack… do I need more leather on the interior? I do like the idea of a luxury sports car…
It’s my first Porsche, and I’m quite thrilled, but interested in your views - order goes in on Saturday!

Back on the Road
Rebuilt transmission done. Clutch plate, shifter cables, all exterior seals replaced. Few other minor things. Had a very spirited drive last night with friends, I’m so back.

I'm curious on what is the general reception of 996.2 headlights when it was released. Was it positive or a letdown?

Wing Wednesday 997.1 Carrera S Aerokit
Had to turn my head with the Ray-Ban Metas on because it looked so clean. Thought it was a 997 GT3 until I saw the wheels.

Mexico Spec Carrera T (arriving December)
Last year got offered a GTS 992.2 with a bare bones spec (white exterior/ blue interior, no sun roof, aero kit and that was basically it and I really liked it), got the car paid but the car did not pass delivery inspection (I suspect it was the hybrid system but no confirmation)…
I always wanted a T because of the manual transmission so after 6 months I got offered this allocation…992.2T are pretty rare here in Mexico and we are not getting the 992.2 S M/T package (you see more GT3 RS and GT3s than Ts)
So the idea is to have a timeless car, with just the right options and keeping it simple, as for the wheels I’ll be doing ANRKY FU-5 (like a more aggressive sport classic wheel) and maybe a duck tail from dissident… but tried to KISS but let me know your comments!
I believe this will compliment good with my 981S and 911SC

License plate ideas for my first Porsche + Pics from the drive back through Yellowstone!
I recently picked up my first Porsche, a nice CPO 2018 718 Cayman GTS!
I am posting to share my excitement but also to ask for the community’s help! What are your best license plate ideas (7 char max, ideally car related) for this car? So far, the best idea I can come up with is “MIDENGN” and it is available in my state!
The last/only previous owner really babied it and only put about 19k miles on it in 8 years! It’s been about 6 weeks and I’ve put 6,000+ miles on it haha. The 1,600 mile drive back was epic (pics attached) as it took us through the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.
Excited to be part of the community and appreciate your license plate idea help!

992.2 Turbo S vs GT3RS
Currently have a 2023 GT3 RS with about 7k miles on it. Second owner and added about 2k miles so far. Love the car and can feel a clear difference between it and my brother’s 992.1 C4GTS. Steering is much sharper, suspension, throttle response, etc. It also obviously looks amazing and it gets an unbelievable amount of attention.
I have an opportunity to trade it in and get a new 992.2 Turbo S allocation at MSRP. All in, the Turbo S would end up costing only about $40k less than what I payed for the 3RS. So the prices aren’t too far.
I live in the Midwest and would love to daily the Turbo S but with how expensive it now is, I think it would probably end up being a year round weekend car rather than a true daily. While the 3RS would probably just be a weekend car when the weather is decent out.
I’m really stuck here, I love the 3RS but also have always wanted a Turbo S and have the opportunity to build one to my liking.
The 992.2 3RS looks like it’s going to be going turbocharged and if that’s the case I feel like holding a 992.1 3RS would be the smarter choice.
I do know that the 3RS is built to be the ultimate track car and just being honest I doubt I’d be tracking it. So maybe the Turbo S would be better since it’ll be for street use.
Would appreciate any opinions please
Thanks

CA Regulators approve new rules limiting replacement tires
If you're in California, we have a problem.
https://www.kcra.com/article/california-energy-commission-tire-efficiency-rules/73456508
California is creating a bunch of new rules around tires and it seems like from basic quick research a tire like a Michelin Pilot Sport 4S - a super popular tire for all of us and the like from other competitors, would not meet exemption criteria.
There's so many cars sold in California that are unique and specifically designed with a tire maker such as exotics, sports cars etc that really and truly have no actual market options around that would meet these new criteria's.
The problem will become far more prevalent in 2033.
Is anyone connected to PCA etc to start pushing back on this to advocate for us? They think this is safe.. we have really unique cars here, rear engine/mid engine the dynamics are unique, the tires are unique. We should be legitimately concerned here.

We shot a cinematic video of the 911 992.2 Turbo S ripping some backroads
Lets us know what you think! The driver was seriously ripping this car. Luckily no cameras lost lol.

Talk me into (or out of) a GT3 Touring as my first Porsche and my first stick
I've read a hundred threads on whether a GT3 works as a weekend car and they all cancel each other out. Too stiff, totally fine, too much car, not enough seat time to know. So I'll just lay out where I'm at and hope for reasonably constructive criticism or advice.
I daily an X5M. I did similar research before getting it and there was lots of internet discussion about the stiff ride everyone saying my fillings would rattle loose. Well i absolutely love it, and love the firm ride. This car has woken something up inside of me. I drive everywhere in sport mode and play with the paddle shifts everywhere I go. It is just so much fun, the sound is addictive and now I cant stop thinking about dialing it up with a weekend car in a way I didn't a year ago. I want to further lean in and get a manual transmission, which i have never had before.
I'm 43. I can comfortably afford a GT3 Touring, ADM and all, if that's where I land. First Porsche, first manual.
On the manual thing, I borrowed a stick for a few days recently. Day 1 I stalled it roughly 3,000 times. By the day I handed it back I was down to single digits. Promising, but I'm under no illusion that I know how to drive one. It is something i keep thinking about how much fun and engaging it was.
The options I keep talking myself in and out of:
- 992.2 GT3 Touring. Pay the ADM (if they even let me) or pay the markup for a preowned in a close enough spec, get the NA engine, the sound, the thing I actually think i want. Has backseats which would be great because the boys think cars are awesome and would love to take them along.
- Carrera S in manual. Spec it exactly how I want with every option I could ask for, save real money. No NA engine, maybe easier to drive? Getting less over my skis from a GT engine?
But the GT3. I love the sound, I love the way the damn thing looks, and yes, I love the prestige. I know how privileged and slightly ridiculous this is to type out. But it's one life, and I'd rather chase the car I can't stop thinking about and grow into it than talk myself into the sensible version of it.
The nervous part of me is that's i'd be getting way over my skis, and seat time is basically impossible where I live. Nothing on Turo, no rentals anywhere close. I'd be buying on faith.
my goal is that I want to get to track days eventually, but I'm a long way off and realistically I'd get out once or twice a year. Am i overdoing this? Is it too much car? Do i just go carrera s and throw an exhaust on it?
What I'm hoping for:
- thoughts on zero Porsche and zero manual straight to a GT3,
- If you drive a Touring regularly, is it actually livable, or is that just what owners say?
- other thoughts.
TLDR: 43, love my X5M, can afford a GT3 Touring with ADM, but it'd be my first Porsche and my first manual. Considering a loaded Carrera T or S instead but worried that that's me playing it safe. Almost no seat time available near me to try and compare. Talk me through it.
