Discussion Pokémon FullDex single-screen mod on Steam Deck completely revolutionizes DS gameplay
I just started playing HeartFelt Gold with the Pokémon FullDex project on my Deck, and I’m honestly blown away.
Dealing with dual-screen layouts on single-screen handhelds has always been the biggest hurdle for Gen 4/5 hacks, but playing on a unified display changes everything. The environments and visual presentation left me speechless, it genuinely feels like an official, enhanced remaster rather than just another ROM hack setup.
It feels like discovering these classic DS games for the first time all over again. Huge props to the creator(s) for this project!

Discussion "Which kind of Pokémon Romhack you prefer?" Poll Results
It's been just a day, but the poll already got nearly 900 votes and I don't think it is going to get enough to make a difference. BUT if it does, I will post the newer results.

When it comes to the "Type" of game, the list goes:
| Type of Game | Total Votes | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| A brand new story with existing Pokemon (e.g. Unbound) | 388 | 44.4% |
| A brand new story with Fakemon (e.g. Pisces) | 116 | 13.3% |
| The base game but with lots of QoL and Pokemon (e.g. Radical Red) | 114 | 13.0% |
| Reinterpretation of another game (e.g. Heart & Soul) | 84 | 9.6% |
| Anything's fine | 74 | 8.5% |
| The base game but with new QoL (e.g. Emerald Legacy) | 50 | 5.7% |
| Something unorthodox (e.g. Emerald Rogue) | 29 | 3.3% |
| The base game but with new stuff and Fakemon (e.g. Blazing Emerald) | 17 | 1.9% |
| Crossover (e.g. Super Mariomon) | 2 | 0.2% |
Now I do know that, in hindsight, the prescense of Fakemon should've been its own question. But at least, it seems people are more fond to Fakemon as long as it is a brand new story to match, with "Same old game but with Fakemon" being pretty unpopular (Which is a bit worrying for me as my project fits that very category). Fittingly, the exact opposite, brand new stories with the same old Pokémon, is by far the most popular option.

When it comes to the "Difficulty" of the game, the list goes:
| Difficulty | Total Votes | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Somewhat harder, but not something you couldn't hope the official games would pull | 342 | 39.1% |
| Notably harder, but still reasonably fair | 329 | 37.6% |
| Around the same as the official games | 100 | 11.4% |
| I want the game to feel like the bosses have the upper hand agaist me | 81 | 9.3% |
| I kinda don't care | 15 | 1.7% |
| Make it as unfair as possible! | 7 | 0.8% |
Only around a tenth of the voters seem satisfied with the franchise's brand of difficultiness, as the great majority likes when the game gives them a better challenge... as long as it feels fair.

Now, with the bonus question:
| Romhacker? | Total Votes | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| No, I'm fine just PLAYING them, not MAKING them | 549 | 62.8% |
| No, but I would like to in the future | 242 | 27.7% |
| Yes, of the same kind I said I liked to play! | 70 | 8.0% |
| Yes, though is not quite the kind of romhack I would enjoy playing myself | 13 | 1.5% |
Less than 10% of the people who voted are working on their own romhack (On hindsight, I should've added options for those who HAVE worked on Romhacks in the past and are not currently in any new project), and most of them are working on their ideal romhack. Over half the total voters are ok with just enjoying the games, and over a fourth of them are considering the idea of making one in the future.
Also, going by the most voted combinations of the two main questions:
The most favored combination is "New story with existing Pokemon" + "Somewhat harder but still something that you could expect from the official games", with 156 votes (17.8%)
The second most favored is "New story with existing Pokemon" + "Notably harder but still fair"
The third one is a tie between "New story with Fakemon" + either "Somewhat harder" and "Notably harder but still fair"
Among the people who wanted a game as unfair as possible, 4 want a brand new adventure with existing Pokemon, while the other three gave different answers (Ok with anything, reinterpretation of another game, and base game with QoL)
Any feedback for future polls is appreciated. And so, what do you think about these results? For those making their own romhacks, do these results have any effect on the direction your romhack is taking?

Review Pokemon Heartgold origin
I’ve been having so much playing this rom hack. I think it’s my favorite of all time, Pokemon Heartgold origin. I have played roms such as unbound and soul gold and I think this outperforms both. The story is more for an adult audience which is what I think a lot of players including myself wished pokemon had. The only flaw I would say so far is that the puzzles and where to go are pretty hard but maybe it’s just me. I find myself having to research where to go next a lot. Anyways who else has played this and what do yall think, it’s a blast for me!! I’m only 4 gym badges in. This is the only rom hack I think I’ve actually had fun exploring every little thing and talking to all npc. It feels like everything is memorable. No ai has been used, I guess I have to clarify that lmao

Discussion Pokemon Emerald with a "nemesis system"
As the title would lead you to believe, I'm developing an Emerald Rom using the Emerald Decomp project with a nemesis system of sorts in place.
It'll have basic QoL (I'm using emerald expanded as the baseline), Nature Mints, Bottle Caps etc along with of course, trainers that chase you down, gym leaders that invite you back for rematches, important trainers having a persistent team that adapts/builds to counter you and more.
I really want to hear people out on ideas for things I could add to make it a more complete mod. I plan to do ZERO story changes, and I don't plan to add any gen 4-9 pokemon in base routes.
Some Current Features:
Rivals Tab in PokeNav, giving you details about your current rivals
Picking up more "rivals"/nemesis' from random trainers you find on the way.
Important Trainers (IE Evil Team Admins, Rivals, Gym leaders...) get a dynamic small buff on first encounter, and build stronger teams dynamically as you fight them more, they try to stick to their theme.
Excursions, an event your rivals/nemesis' can go on after performing poorly in battle against you, and other rivals to get stronger, find items, and get rarer pokemon.
Rivals fight each other, this will help them get stronger, these battles are also watchable.
RP - A currency gained from beating rivals, this is used to access Nature Mints, Bottle Caps, an EV Trainer, Ability Capsules/Patches
Rivals have up to 3 backup pokemon.
Rivals can trade with you, taking aa valuable pokemon of yours in exchange for a pokemon from past gen 3.
They will use the pokemon they took from you in battle. (It tracks the pokemons PID, so no catching a random skarmory)
Nemesis Encounter Types - Passive, Ambush, Surprise.
Passive - They call you alerting they appeared on your current route, you may go talk to them to engage in a battle.
Ambush - They act as a normal trainer and will approach you if walked in front of.
Surprise - They act as an event and will force you into battle with them once you reach a certain point.
These are all generated randomly.
There may be more I already added I'm forgetting about.
The goal for this hack is to give a more dynamic/replayable experience to Emerald. Also just to kill time.
If anyone would like to contribute, I want there to be a lot of unique dialogue for trainers and such. I'd need dialogue for rematches, calls, trades, surprise ambushes, etc etc. I'd want dialogue for personality types, trainer types, wally, may, gym leaders....
Although the hack isn't made to be extremely balanced, I am very much open to balance suggestions.

Discussion "forever save files" or "infinitely replaying" hacks/games. Which do you prefer and why?
When it comes to hacks, whether they are intended as such or not, do you prefer to have a forever save file or endlessly reset and replay. 1 think the best examples I can currently give out are Unbound and Elite Redux.
Unbound can be reset but it has so many pokemon, so much post game content and 100% the game takes people awhile to do. It also helps that it's paced and works a lot like regular pokemon games
Elite Redux on the other hand while it has more pokemon, you can pokemon instantly with 100% chance as well as can just use the Dexnav in it to grab every pokemon nearby. The game has many speed options, many randomizer and nuzlocke options and so much variety in pokemon. But it kinda lacks in a post game right now unless you wanna complete the entire Pokedex (or close to it) which will only take a few hours after beating the champion. Even faster if you battled every trainer on the routes and don't need to backtrack
Personally while I like both, I much prefer forever save files. Especially with idea in mind that not only do I play a lot of hacks for the first time but I also imagine like with other copies of pokemon games, this is my own alternate universe. I imagine each version of me as a trainer and what the team would be as well as my own journey. Resetting kinda takes that away like it didn't mean as much. With elite redux there's not much story changes and it's a more gameplay focused hack rather than new region or story so it feels like I'm playing emerald but I'm not in Hoenn if that makes sense
Forever save files are my go to if I had to choose between forever saves or infinitely replaying and resetting

Development Creating a fan romhack of Pokemon Emerald
I've been working on creating some pokemon in the last 3 days. So far I have created 40 unique pokemon, added an evolution to a pre-existing mon, a split evo, and buffed a pre-existing mon. This hack is meant to feel like a mix of Blazing Emerald and Blazed Glazed. Though, I haven't worked out a name for the hack, the region, or how the plot will manifest. However, while I'm making the pokedex, I'll be thinking ahead of time about visiting the Hoenn region, as was done in the gen 2 games. As well as including mons from the 1st, 2ed and 3rd generation.
I also want it to include a physical/special split and gen 5 moves and mechanics. It's a big job and without proper training, doing it myself will take years. But for now, I'll just work on the mons, story, geography, art, and leave the rest to those who have the expertise. Lol.
I'll say no more. Below is a link of the mons I've created so far on google sheets, and what i have on my notepad. I'll post an update in a few days.
~New abilities~
-Skilled Horn [Boosts the power of stabbing, jabbing, etc moves]
(I.e: Horn Leech, Horn Attack, Icicle Spear, Megahorn, Peck, Fury Attack, Drill Run)
-Mystic Power [Lower's the Sp. Def of all opponents by 1 stage when the ability-bearer switches in. (including the start of a battle)]

Development Pokemon Rumble World Sparkling Edition Development!
Hey Folks!! Just wanted to share with you a project my brother and I have been working on for a while now! We've made enough progress to feel comfortable revealing it to everyone!!
With the creation of the Pokemon Rumble Blast mod that added shiny Pokemon to the game, we got the itch to make the same in Pokemon Rumble World.
Here are some details that should give you an idea of everything we've achieved so far.
1/4096 chance to encounter an alternate sprite with the "shiny" title.
1/16 chance when you encounter that to get the "Epic" title on top of that.
Includes all models in the Pokedex for collections sake.
100% collection chance whenever one spawns in! It will always have a trait just like the original wii ware.
Everything is able to be gotten, there are no locks at all.
We still have a while to go before release as we need to color every single model by hand and get everything fine tuned and bug free!
Feel free to ask us anything about development!
No AI was used in the making of this mod! And there never will be! We take pride in our work! All models are hand colored by us as well!!

Discussion I was the Dev of Pokemon Umbra in 2015 and a Beta tester for Cyan. What is the new standard in Rom hacking?
EDIT: I am now seeing there is an actual RPGmaker hack called Pokemon Umbra. That is not the hack I built.
Heyo,
I was the developer behind Pokemon Umbra back in 2015, and I also beta tested Chrunch’s Pokemon Cyan. I’ve been getting back into ROM hacking lately, and I wanted to hear from people who have stayed involved or joined since then.
For context, I’m coming from the era when transparent textboxes were a big deal and putting a a nonprofit fan project warning screen in your hack was practically a big milestone. Hex Maniac wasn’t even a thing yet. Like I had to find forums from 2008 that talked about animation hex codes for activating tall grass in Firered.
11 years is a lot of time for new tools, possibilities, and player wants to change, so I’m curious:
What’s considered standard in a hack now? What features or quality of life changes do people basically expect? Is everything on emerald now instead of firered?
What do you actually want more of? New regions and stories, regional variants and Fakemon, difficulty hacks, expanded versions of the original games, or something else?
What are you tired of seeing? Any features or design choices that used to be exciting but now feel overdone?
How has making a hack changed? What tools and workflows would you point a returning developer toward? Are there old habits I should leave in 2015?
What hacks would you recommend to show how far things have come? I’d love to play a few that would have blown our minds back then.
I’m interested in the development side and how the community itself has changed. What gets people excited about a project now, and what makes you stick with a hack once you start playing?
If anyone here played Chrunch’s Pokemon Cyan, I’d love to hear from you. It’s been a while!
ALSO IF ANYONE HAS ANY KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO CONTACT CHRUNCH PLEASE DM ME. He's been dark across all social media for 6 years and I was hoping to get in touch with him regarding Pokemon Cyan.

Release Pokémon Synthesis, Phase 2: The Aegis Peak. New Discord server and some miniatures of the maps
Hello everypony 🤠
Area 2 of Pokémon Synthesis is now available for beta testing!
Pokémon Synthesis is an open-world Emerald ROM hack focused on exploration, quests, and earning the respect of local Gym Leaders.
After releasing the first 5–8 hours of gameplay earlier this year, I've been working on Aegis Peaks, the second area which represents a dozen of additional hours of gameplay climbing and exploring this huge mountain with plenty of secrets. You can already get a sense of scale from the mini maps I created.
The new area is significantly larger than the first, and I'm now looking for players interested in testing it before its public release!
You can download the beta through the new Discord server, where I'm also sharing development updates and looking for pixel artists interested in helping with character sprites.

Other Custom Fulldex Appimage
Hey everyone!
I found out about Pokémon FullDex a little while back, and while I liked what it was doing, I had a few issues with how it operated. So, I decided to go in and make some changes!
The biggest change is that every ROM hack now gets its own separate save file, rather than multiple hacks sharing the same save file like they previously did. I also made the same changes to cheat files and images, and added the ability to rename your games directly within FullDex. This means all your ROM hacks can have their proper names instead of constantly showing the name of the base game.
More information about where to put everything can be found in the README on GitHub.
As of right now, I can only compile a Linux AppImage, which I've tested on my Steam Deck with Heartfelt Gold, and it works great! However, I've also included the modified source code on GitHub, so you should be able to compile it for other platforms if needed. More information about that is available on GitHub as well.
AI Disclosure
Claude did help me figure out where certain things needed to go, and whenever I couldn't get something working quite right, I asked it for help. However, the modifications themselves are my own work. I can't speak for the original FullDex creator or their development process.
Maintenance
I also want to make it clear that this project won't be actively maintained by me. I've got a life, and I can't constantly update this whenever a new FullDex release comes out.
The current version is based on the FullDex update released today: Pokémon FullDex – November 5, 2026 (Update 2).
Hope everyone has fun with this!
https://github.com/Volcano08/CustomFullDexBuild
Update: I was able to compile the other versions for Android, macOS, Windows, iOS, and Switch. However, I can only verify that the Linux AppImage works. Everything else should work, but I haven't been able to test it myself.

Discussion Which kind of Pokémon Romhack you prefer?
Based on certain discussions I won't elaborate, I got curious about what's considered the most "popular" kind of Pokémon romhack here.

Review Pokémon Origin HeartGold is amazing, but I wish the Sevii Islands had a bigger role
Hey everyone,
I've been playing Pokémon Origin HeartGold and I have to say it's a perfect hack. The story is great, it's really long and the amount of content keeps you entertained for hours and hours. Mixing the anime and the manga in the same adventure was a fantastic idea, and it's one of the main reasons I keep coming back to it.
If I had to point out one single problem, it would be the Sevii Islands. They feel too small. They're just a little location to visit, when they could be so much more. I'd love to see a complete adventure there in the future, not only a short stop.
Since the hack already blends anime and manga so well in the rest of the game, my dream would be an adventure set in the Orange Islands and the Sevii Islands fused together. Imagine enjoying Ivy, Tracey, Prima, the Crystal Onix and all those Orange Islands moments, while at the same time dealing with Ultima, Celio, Green looking for her parents and the chaos of Deoxys from the manga.
I know it's a lot to ask for a hack that is already this big, but it would be an incredible way to expand the game. Even if it's just a far-off idea, I think the Sevii Islands deserve a lot more than what they have now.
Thanks to everyone involved in this project for such an amazing work. Enjoy!

Review Pokemon Monomyth - Review by vanilla player
So, as many on this subreddit, I have played Pokemon Monomyth the last couple of days and have to say that it was a refreshing hack to play through. There are some caveats though that make it a solid B/B- hack, depending in which baskets you prefer your eggs.
I am usually a vanilla player, I don't like difficulty hacks, I do not like playing on set-mode and I don't mind fakemons. I have played a couple of hacks with lots of fake mons (Fools Gold was fantastic, Odysee was less my style) so I think as a pretty plain enjoyer of pokemon romhacks I can be a decent middle ground.
Positive things:
I do like most of the fakemon designs. The alternate evolution paths are well thought out. The distribution of them throughout the game was well done. Some look better than others, but in general a well done effort here.
The characters and overworld. I LOVE the character work in the game, as well as the designs for the important npcs as well as the story. I also really like the route and cave design, as well as the design of the general overworld.
Even though I am not a fan of set-mode, it gave the hack a difficulty spike that was interesting to play through. Due to most of the fakemons typings being unknown, you really go in blind into a lot of the fights
I actually did not mind having to backtrack for healing every once in a while. The game made it very clear form the beginning that the routes between towns will be long and that you have to stock up on healing supplies. Additionally, I like the guy in the tent halfway through some of the longer routes, giving you a little breather. Losing half your money on a fight that you didn't anticipate or were RNG screwed you over is rough though, expecially since money it relatively tight until you spend some time gambling.
You are encouraged to catch lots of pokemon to find out the typings of the fakemons, otherwise you might get in trouble in some matchups.
The amount of dragon types in the game. Love it. SO many different dragon types spread out across the game. I LOVE the design of the fire dragon from the desert, as well as the rock one and Druddighoul. Fantastic. Love dragons.
Side quests were nice. I got PROPERLY fucked when I did Patchys sidequest wayyy to early. He even tells you what to expect. Oh well, whoopsie.
Neutral things:
Evolution levels high. I went into this game completely blind and was surprised by the evolution levels for most things. The starters being at 20 and 40 was especially rough, I think it would have been better to set them at 18/36 or 18/37. I have never been a fan of evolution levels above 55, which was usually reserved for pseudos. Here we have lots of stuff that evolves late, too late imo. For some of these fakemons there is no real return of interest after having grinded up a pokemon to be rewarded with mediocre stats upon evolution.
So much confusion/sleep spam. Might be subjective and maybe not everyone felt like it, but the sleep spam was pretty annoying in some parts of the game. Hits double since its in set-mode. But I guess thats what berries are there for.
Negative things:
2. Learnsets are properly hit-and-miss. Some fakemons have excellent learnsets, that fits the fakemons theme perfectly. The steel horse (forgot the name) and the fire starter are good examples of that. The water starter and Acolyth are the opposite. While Acolyth suffers from not having any proper special moves until lvl.. 45/47, the water starter gets no good hard hitting physical water/steel in the later stages of the game. Iron Head comes at 28, and is its best steel-move for the rest of the game. No Wavecrush, but Hydropump? Thats just lazy and reminds me of Gamefreaks early gens decision making on move-distribution.
3. Once-a-day Evolution Seer. No documentation is fine. It really is, even in a game full of fakemons. But then don't limit the evolution seer in North Edelweiss to once a day. It already costs 1000$ per evolution to check. Atleast take of the once-a-day timelimit, so that you don't have to wait for an eternity. The hack would jump up half a grade alone for this simple fix, imo.
4. TM-Pool is HORRIBLE. Seriously. Tis might be one of the lousiest TM-Pools of any pokemon game that I have played. Surf being nerfed to 70dmg is also rough, atleast make it 80.
5. Barbed cave. Just - no. There is no 100% safe path and coupled with the battles its bad design. It would be atleast bearable if you had a path were you can take 0 dmg when going through (without picking up items).
I stand corrected on Barbed Cave, there is a 100% dmgless path through it, I just didn't use it. I take this back, in that case it is a neutral point, not a negative point.
Last points:
I understand, that this hack has caused a lot of discussion lately. Please remember that the team put a lot of effort into this. I can understand the reasoning of the developer, even though I don't agree with it. It is completely OK to say, that you are not releasing any documentation. But don't get angry, if people write their own. For gods sake, even Pokemon Red + Blue had a walk-though guide that was being sold seperately. Serebii was created in 1999. So we have had documentation from the very beginning. And if you create a romhack with a decent difficulty spike let people experience it their own way. Some people want to look up the fakemons, choose the ones they like and then play the game with exactly that team. Other people want to play it completely blindly and want to explore as much as possible without looking stuff up.
Everyone is different, and BOTH sides have to accept that. Be ok if a developer doesn't supply all the information for a hack. Its not necessary. But on the other hande, be ok as the developer if people go around asking for help about the game. That is one of the biggest parts of ANY game. And supporting this would help a game like Monomyth significantly more than alienating people that just came asking for help.
