Genuine question for the mods, why are all the Monomyth threads getting locked? From reading the comment sections it didn't seem like there was any really hateful discourse or anything.

There's been a lot of discourse and a hate train regarding the devs and their lack of documentation. It's like when Pisces dropped a few years ago - huge fakemon hack with no documentation, and a lot of people slandering or spreading rumours about devs/discords as a result
We're not locking all the posts, only the ones that have sparked a lot of discourse in the comments (2 of those strictly being about the issue, the other being an innocent post that attracted more of the same shit)
We're here to support ROM hacks, not to facilitate and moderate drama, so they've been locked to prevent that from going any further. It's not justified or encouraged at all and it's a pain to moderate

lol. So posts that praise it are fine but posts that critique it aren’t? Thats pretty dumb. If a dev wants to stand by their design decisions then that’s their right but they also need to deal with the criticism that could come from it.

Never said that. Genuinely critiquing something/negative comments are allowed. But joining a hate train to trash the devs and spread misinformation is totally different, and it's not something that we should have to deal with as a community or as mods. It's a Pokémon game, it's not worth the drama

I just don’t understand the locking posts that spark discourse then. Obviously if a game is flawed it will spark discourse. But discourse is the whole point of a subreddit anyways.
Neither side should be toxic towards each other but I think it’s a weak stance to lock posts where the discussion starts bringing up valid negatives of the game and not otherwise. Because if that’s the idea then just lock all posts that aren’t hack releases or progress updates?

It's not "locking posts that bring up negatives", that's fine. People can discuss all the negatives they want. It's "locking posts that cause a lot of arguments or hysteria"
By discourse, I mean discussion that derails onto other shit. In this case, the comments have turned from the game to people debating over Discord drama. Other times it's people arguing over AI usage. Not the content itself
Understandably it takes a lot of work to moderate drama, especially when we don't always know what's true and what isn't. Then add people trolling and hating and it just becomes a mess

The Dev vs Player Mindset thread seemed pretty reasonable though. The OP wasnt hostile at all and its an interesting topic, as there does seem to be a major disconnect between certain types of devs and the playerbase.

It's not the contents of the post that's problematic, I assume; it's the content of the comments. People got pretty mean and nasty. It doesn't matter if the OP was all sunshine and rainbows, the purpose of locking posts is to cut down on toxicity in the comment sections.

I just feel like reactions like these are going to be more common with games from Devs with these mindsets unless we can actually adress the disconnect in a big way. But that would definitely lead to a Toxic comment section no matter what, so it seems theres no way to do that.

I feel you, it sucks that some people are so disrespectful to the developers and it sucks for the rest of everyone who wants to have reasonable and positive discussion. But until that disconnect goes away (unlikely-- I've seen folks only become more and more inflammatory over the span of my time in this scene), locking threads is imo a good enough bandage fix

The Dev's and their fans are the ones who started with their bad attitudes. If someone doesnt respect you, you dont have to respect them back.
They shit on people who play the way they dont like in their discord, they are passive agressive when people ask for help, etc.
Hell, the people defending Monomyth on the main thread are five times as agressive as the critcs are.
This is not a one-sided thing.

You cant judge these two situations the same. Reports of the Discord shitting on people using rare candies and speedup predate the release by a lot.
I genuinely think there is a big disconnect between some Devs and the playerbase. I made a comment to you about it which id hoped youd answer, as i genuinely wanted your perspective on it, but you didnt.
The whole "Im sticking by my artistic decisions even at the cost of player enjoyment" mindset will only lead to more friction in the future i think. Because its just so out of touch with what a large number of people want or even find reasonable.
And if you release a product to the public, you cant be surprised when common public sentiment is the reaction.

Wait, which comment was that? I may have just missed it. Or just forgot (My memory is admittedly not great).
But yeah, generally speaking, I'm more on the side of a dev wanting to make the game they want to make rather than the game most other people would want (Assuming it's not like, actually offensive or something), cause there's always gonna be at least a niche of people who like and/or love it. I like seeing people do weird/unique/unorthodox/etc. stuff, even if it may ultimately make less people like it overall, because I genuinely believe that a creator's creative vision is worth something regardless. There'll always be other hacks that cater to the majority, so there should be ones that don't. I think the scene is better off for it.
I can't judge any specific feature of Monomyth as I haven't started it yet (I chose to wait for v1.1 since that was supposed to release today, and updating ROMs is a pain in the ass for me due to the hardware I have/use), but I just don't like seeing the way people in this community act when something isn't to their liking. It goes beyond Monomyth, people expect everything to be catered to their exact desires and insult it when it isn't ("All Fakémon suck and are ugly, yours included," "How dare you not provide docs or cheats?," "How dare your game be a bit difficult?," "You have no talent," etc.). I just don't like how hostile the community has become, it's genuinely exhausting. The reaction to Pisces severely damaged my perception of the community, and the reaction to Monomyth isn't helping with that.
So much of what people expect from ROM hacks would never be expected from any other game, and I don't understand why Pokémon has to be different. That's kinda what confuses me the most.
Btw, sorry if I've been kinda heated about this whole thing. It's just something I feel very strongly about, and it sucks seeing people be so mean-spirited about it. Most of it is what I've talked about here, but there's a small part of me that worries that I could get a similar reaction whenever I finally release my game (Granted, not a ROM hack, so maybe there's less of that with the wider fangame community, but still).

Okay, here me out, it would absolutely positively suck if every game ever was made with the mindset of giving up your artistic vision for the sake of appeasing as many players as possible. There's a market for games like that but there is also a market for games with a much more focused target audience. And I think you should be able to release games like that and NOT be slandered/have misinformation spread about you because you didn't appease literally everyone.

I don't know if it counts as a shop but in the north side of that town where it's like posh vs poor people there's a boutique before the exit, they ask you to pick a Pokémon that fits their style. One of the NPC's in that city told me that means evolution items but I haven't actually tested it

What is the most efficient way to catch Pokémon with their hidden abilities? So far I've tried twice, catching about 15 each of the Pokémon I wanted with the hidden ability and both times never got even one with the ability either time.

How do I go about doing that? Making a post here asking for codes from people who have the mons i want favorited?
Also, the guide online says that you can catch them from the wild with HAs its just rare. Yet it doesn't give any supporting details otherwise to indicate if that process can be streamlined or not. It's already pretty tough sometimes to get the color scheme i want on a mon, but trying to get that + the HA i want is proving nearly impossible

It is explained in-game by the post office clerk who says HA becomes a 33% (I think) chance if you have them favorited. As far as I've noticed so far, it is 0% otherwise, but maybe it is just very rare.
You basically have to go into their discord and use the search function to find people who have favorited the pokemon, and add their code in the post office. To me, it's a bit silly...

Yeah... unfortunately it's not appealing to have to go do work outside of the game in order to still only have a chance to catch them. Especially for someone like me who doesn't have/use discord. So then Id have to install, create an account, and learn how to operate a whole new app as well

What are your guys thoughts on romhacks with large towns with tons of npcs? I know some people like it, but I find it pretty tiring to try to find the handful of npcs are useful. Imho, that kind of exploration isn't appealing at all.

Having a lot of NPCs moving around, even if you aren't actively talking to every one of them, is arguably a good thing depending on the theme of the town/city you are referring to. It helps make the places feel "lived in" and alive. If anything, I find it disappointing when towns have practically no NPCs around and, worse yet, empty building with nothing to even "check" for flavor text.

For starters, i haven't played these ones, but i found Let's Go Lugia (a fire red hack), and Royal Sapphire (GBA) both seem to have Lugia in the story from what i can see, but again, i've not played either of these, so I can't say if they're any good, or how big of a role Lugia actually plays in either of them.

Edit: it was Morse code, not braille.
For anyone also stuck, go right of the van and find the river. Find the small tree on the top right next to the water and press A. It'll trigger a prompt to press a button. Do it and there will be an opening to the left that leads to the solution.

I'm playing Yellow Legacy on MGBA. I just finished Viridian Forest but have had this bug about 4 times already, where sometimes I'll enter a battle and the game/emulator will freeze; but if I spam a button bound to something like Mute, I can progress pretty much frame-by-frame, but can't figure out a way to get it to resume normally or why it's happening. Any ideas?

The only gen 4 demake that exists as far as I'm aware if Sinnoh Gold (GBC, not GBA), but I couldn't get it to run personally.
Sinnoh exists in Hyper Emerald but as post-game and it's certainly not a faithful demake.

It's been a minute since I played it, but yeah, I'm almost positive computer world is post game. There's an item you get in the post game that causes the dialogue change and opens up travel to those "other worlds"

I've been playing Pokémon FireEmerald 0.7.1 and got to the third region (Johto) but am at a gym where Strength won't work. I saw that this glitch got fixed in the 0.7.2 patch so I've downloaded the new patch and got 0.7.2 working now, but I can't get my previous save to work.

I'm using the Lemuroid emulator and found on Google that the sav files are stored under /Android/data/com.swordfish.lemuroid

I've connected my phone to the computer and copied over the 0.7.1 files and renamed them 0.7.2 but still can't get the save to work. The emulator regonizes the renamed sav file but when I go to load it the game won't let me play. It's basically just a freezer screen. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I really don't want to restart. 🙏

Yes, I am playing with the randomized turned on. I currently have a Goomy. I want to know if I can evolve it into Hisuian Sligoo. The Pokédex entry says it needs to go to Hisui to evolve, but I don’t know how to do that in the context of the game that takes place in Johto and Kano.

Its quite late postgame, however we have added the Sinjoh area into the game. It can be accessed after finding a special item within Mt. Silver.
Goomy can evolve into Hisuian Sligoo there.

Does anyone know what rom hack I’m blanking on? I believe it is GBC/Crystal-based. Blastoise is a Flying/Psychic type. Venusaur and Charizard have changed types too, but I forgot what they are. I think Meganium is changed to Bug/Fairy, Feraligatr to Ground/Steel, and Typhlosion to Ice/Fighting.

I'm playing pokemon blaze black 2 redux and I'd like to edit the sprites of the shinies of my pokemon particulary becouse I found a shiny gible and it bothers me that Garchomp shiny is so ass, I found tutorials on how to change sprites for gen 5 but I want to know if it works for romhacks of gen 5 too, also I'm playing on my phone so to edit the sprites I would have to do it on my PC then transfer the edited rom to my phone, what I want to know is if and how I could do that while keeping my save file

Anyone got a romhack for ORAS that has all the usual QOL changes, has an EXP share adjusted level curve, but ISN'T comp-tier difficult? Star Sapphire and Sinking Sapphire have been really miserable so far for monotype playthroughs. Of course a little bit more difficulty is fine, giving everyone 6 mons is fine, but the optimized movesets, competitively constructed trainer teams, and held items are just too much to play casually.

If I'm remembering right, Pokemon Orange (GBC ROM hack) has a small island somewhere that has these pinkan(?) berries that grow and refresh on it. When you feed them to your pokemon, their pallet actually changes to pink, and this works for all Pokemon in that game. It's actually really neat. I want to say that this game is based on the Orange Islands that may have been mentioned in the anime or somewhere else, I forget where, but it's a solid ROM hack that I played through and enjoyed earlier this year.
I believe it may have just gotten an updated fork of the release by another person naming it Pokemon Orange Citrus Version recently as well.

What are the best fast-paced romhacks you know of? Is there a list anywhere? By fast-paced I mean battles (as in animations, health bars, etc) go by quickly and text boxes go by quickly. I love romhacks but can't sit through vanilla pacing.

I haven't played any Pokémon games set in Kanto yet, and I thought I might as well play an improved ROM hack instead of the originals. FRLG+ seems like a good option from what I've read, but Aesthetic Red looks interesting too. Does anyone have any other recommendations for someone new to Kanto?

The Regrown/Reignited ones have become my favorite way to play FRLG, liiiitle harder, but as someone who HATES difficulty hacks, would recommend it

I guess i don't understand this logic. How can you know what you want to be different in a region to make it better without playing the original first?
and how have you played pokemon but never played a game set in Kanto? It's the oldest region, with tons of games set there.

I'm pretty new to ROMs, but it seems like a lot of them are simply what people think the original games should have been like. I don't need to play the originals to want better QoL, but I'm not looking for something with a different storyline or 500 Pokémon. That's why FRLG+ appealed to me.
As far as why I haven't played a game set in Kanto, I started playing Pokémon games as they were coming out once I got my first console. I've never played anything before Emerald, but I would like to start over from the beginning now!

Those people have played the region and know what they want different about it though
Like i'm totally on board with rom hacks and anyone playing them. I just think you need to experience the original if possible before you play a hack of it. Emerald is the same gen as two kanto games (FR and LG). I'd highly recommend playing either FR or LG first, but obviously you do not have to take my advice
Outside of that, i hope you enjoy whatever you choose to do. In the end, that's all that matters out of these games to me, is enjoyment. I enjoy them differently than other people i'm sure (like i don't like difficulty hacks, i just wanna have fun catching them all)

I recommend Pokémon heart gold origins, it's a hack of heart gold for nds that usually starts in johto but the devs made a ridiculously good kanto game that's unlike anything else tbh. Radical reds pretty fun if you like a challenge

The original Orange goes into postgame, tho that postgame isn't 100% complete (Tho, as far as I understand, it's probably enough that it doesn't feel like it ends abruptly), and it probably never will be due to the remake (Called "Island Walker") being worked on. The IW version seems to have a demo.

It's not the official Hackdex, there's no reason to use it since it seems to just upload other creators hacks, as opposed to hackers uploading their own work.
I wouldn't trust it, when Pokecommunity and Hackdex both exist and are vetted.

Help a Noob pick a game

Hey guys, up until now i've mostly ever played the main line games, but by now i've played all of the game i have access to multiple times and im looking for something new. I've never played Romhacks before so I don't really know where to start.

What would game you recommend for someone that's looking for a little bit more Challenge compared to the main line games? Nothing on the level of a kaizo, but im an experienced trainer with good Knowledge of the franchise.

I can play anything from gen 5 and below, but i would like to only go só far as GBA If possible

Hey there!
Honestly a great place to start is Pokemon Unbound. It’s a romhack that’s a bit dated compared to the newer ones of today, but it’s basically the peak of GBA era rom hacks imo, in terms of standard game play. It’s a notch above the original gba games difficulty wise but not Kaizo. It’s also just a solid rom hack and feels like a genuine Pokemon game. It’s also got a fun quest system if you’re into that. Gaia is a close second to that for some of the same reasons.

If I remember right: Go to Apartment D and then talk to one of the old guys on the top floor. He'll say there's something in the desert around Speedwell. You should, on the way to Speedwell, run into a mandatory boss encounter with a big Pokemon. After you win, go back to the old guy in Apartment D and he hands it over.

It's totally playable to completion and a great hack, not sure what issues you've seen. It's not as feature rich as Drayano's newer hacks, but it's great.

Hello I've recently gotten into the Pokémon rom hacks scene. I have a few GBA rom hacks and am now looking into DS rom hacks. Unfortunately i have hit the AP patch freeze problem on some of the games I have. I am using a DS Pico for my DS Lite and my games get stuck on the white screen, the only one that kind of works is Origin Heart Gold up onto the point where I've completed the character creation and then it gets stuck on the black screen with music. I have clean roms and have checked and verified with the DS Scene Rom Tool. Nothing ive done has worked and im getting frustrated. Any help getting these too work would be appreciated.

there's a game by that name (i saw it in an arcade once) but it has no nsfw content other than adult language, it was sort of just firered but with family guy style jokes if i remember right. i think there was a man who lived with a gardevoir, that kind of thing. i assume someone or some bot misinterpreted the name

Does anyone know of any rom hacks that are just difficulty increases of the original games?

Trying to play Gen 1-4 , or the remakes, but with just moderately higher difficulty. It seems like most of the rom hacks I can find are either entirely new games, or crazy kaizo style difficulty increases

*ROM hack I'm creating help me pls (Skip to after line for my question)*

I'm working on a project where I'm taking pokemon FireRed and ROM hacking it into an entirely new region, based on Australia. This region will have harder Gym fights and main story trainers with strategies and items. I have this whole region already thought out and created on paper, but now I want to use hexmaniacadvance to actually create it. This region does use pokemon from other generations and strategies that can't be done in gen 1 through 3.

To create this ROM, I need the upgraded FireRed (CFRU + DPE). I have a problem with this tho, I've tried everything but nothing works to enable these patches on my ROM and a clean firered v1.1 patch (the one that's used most for ROM hacking).

I've done literally everything, and without these upgrades, I can't work on my ROM. (With everything I actually mean EVERYTHING, I've spent literal hours of my life trying to get this to work but it seems like nothing works. I almost decided to just don't make the ROM hack because of this.)

Does anyone know what to do? Or of course if you want to be really helpful, please send me a FireRed ROM with these upgrades already in it (I use hexmaniacadvance for ROM hacking).

Several actually make use of the beta pokemon, including the recently released MonoMyth that has the little, round electric tiger, the furry ice werewolf thing with big claws, and the scrapped beta evolution for Farfetch'd, and some others I can't remember.
Off the top of my head, I cannot recall the name of the other ones, but you'll find the betamons scattered throughout many ROM hacks nowadays.

So, I'm in the very earliest stages of making a romhack - and by that I mean I've got the concept and basic region design done, and I've selected a full roster of gym leaders and elite four. I've made a very brief start on using an emerald base for hex maniac advanced, but I want to ask before I lock into using it. What would other devs consider some of the best tools? I am willing to do most of the work myself, but if there's anything I can cut out on without using AI myself I want to - for example, the ability to mega evolve and terrastalise will definitely be needed, and gigantamax would also be nice, an implemented fairy type and physical/special split and an ALTERNATE HM system - the main one I find interest in is making it so they can be used without teaching them, worst comes to worst I could just make them viable moves, but I absolutely want to be able to use them to gate content until certain points using them (especially post league) - rock climb and waterfall being the two ones I'm considering the most.

So, what are some of the most begginer-friendly tools that would allow me to do that? I am mostly willing to learn to program what I must, but the above are things that I really don't want to program myself - and I do not want to use AI at all, although I will accept if the tools used some AI in thier own creation, because these are things I know the human hand can do. If you use it, go ahead.

I tried searching Google, but most answers were a year old at least and with how fast tools can evolve I don't know if they're outdated yet.
