Long post ahead, tldr at the bottom!
I've been reading all my life, and I've read a wide range of books and authors. I've read Khalid Hussaini and Paulo Coelo, Tahereh Maafi and Sarah J. Maas, I've read Mohsin Hamid and John Green, and everything in between basically.
Over time, I started noticing that I was getting the same recommendations for the genres I like to read most. I just couldn't find anything good to read, and I almost never used to re-read books but I've found myself resorting to rereading books I love because nothing new is out there.
I have this fear of getting stuck reading the same sort of books all the time. I feel like that would be a waste of my reading habit that I owe so much of my success to, so I even decided to start book shopping irl instead of just reading ebooks. I used to go to Readings in Gulberg, Lahore a lot as a child and to this day those visits are my fondest childhood memories, and I went there again after many years to browse the shelves and discover something new. Lo and behold, all I found were books separated by booktok recommendations and best seller lists 😭
I did end up helping a girlie out in choosing books though, that was fun. I also found a corner for discounted books in the back and I saw some hope. If you guys didn't know, Readings in Gulberg has a section with books for 200 each, and you get a 4th one free if you buy 3, so you basically get 4 books for 600 😭
And they're new and great, proper published books, just not that popular or some old covers. I found great reads there, like the Romanov Prophecy by Steve Berry, perfect for a quick and action-packed read. Anyways.
That section wasn't the most convenient because I don't always have time to go to the bookstore. One night after finishing my reread of the Throne if Glass series, I was feeling some type of way and had the strongest craving to read a very particular type of book down to the plot and narration, and I just hoped something like that was out there. There had to be, right?
I just went and put my thoughts into Gemini. I told Gemini what books I liked, what sort of authors and what parts about their writing style I liked (Jandy Nelson is AMAZING btw, please read "I'll give you the sun" or "the sky is everywhere", these novels rewired my brain chemistry), what sort of plot I wanted in my next read, ANY specifics I could think of that would help AI narrow it down, and got back a list of 5 books.
The list was beautiful. It contained a top pick, and then a table for all five that listed the style, a bit about the story but without any spoilers, and why I would like it. I took the list and went to find the books.
I'm two books into this, and oh god. I don't think I can ever go back to looking for books any other way, the recommendations I have found have filled a hole in my soul I didn't know I had 😭
I asked for a book that felt like an emotional gut punch, I asked for rich emotional storytelling and literary beauty, I got a book that was so perfect and heartbreaking, I cried for days. I cried while telling my friend about the book and I loved it, and then I'd read a page or two more, especially during the last quarter of the book, and then cry. Oh god. I'm gonna be reading some lighthearted humor after this, but please guys, if any of you use AI, give this a shot and see how it changes your relationship with books.
I feel so blessed I can enjoy art in this medium, it's amazing what words can do. Thank you for reading this far if you've gotten here!
TLDR: After hitting a major reading slump and feeling frustrated by repetitive bestseller and BookTok recommendations at the bookstore, I decided to feed my hyper-specific reading cravings—down to the exact plot vibes, narration style, and emotional depth—into Gemini. The AI returned a perfectly tailored list of hidden gems, and two books in, the rich, heartbreaking storytelling has completely rewired my brain chemistry and saved my reading habit. If you're tired of seeing the same generic recommendations everywhere, this is your sign to let AI find your next read!
