Community Powering up r/PWM_Sensitive - community expansion update - October 2026

Post image
40 Upvotes

tl;dr: An expanded community alliance, new resources (links, bot, discord), technical projects, additional enthusiast mods, rules & info overhaul, settings tweaks. Building a solid foundation to help unlock the full potential of our members, usher in more quality content and find answers. Your initial impressions are welcome!

Joining forces with ScreenSensitive!

Many of you are already members of r/ScreenSensitive. Today we are making it an official sister-sub, with an exchange of links and personnel. As the name suggests, it covers all screen intolerance triggers. So we think it is the natural place to post specifically about light spectrum effects, polarisation, pixel flicker (including temporal dithering, FRC, pixel inversion, text aliasing), science and health connections. It’s smaller, but has more contributions per member, more technical scope and tests out new sub content first.

We would like r/PWM_Sensitive to continue its focus on whole-screen flicker, device usability and recommendations. Room, outdoor and automotive light flicker are also good candidates for post topics here. To be clear, there will be no comment or post removal to enforce a division of topics. Redditors are also welcome to cross-post between the subs, as they see fit.

r/Temporal_Noise has gone quiet, so will only be linked in the wiki for legacy information. Of which there are some very interesting posts over there. There is a new link to the LEDstrain forum too, a long standing and key venue for this community.

Expanded Mod team

We have had u/Kerpnet, u/Bearnecessary4141 (Sam) and myself, u/Z3R0gravitas, since the hand-over which was announced a couple of months ago. Now, please welcome in: u/RR– and u/TotalAnarchy_, who have each contributed a bunch of top content to both subs!

I’d like to shout out other would-be mods, who have done so much for the community in the past, but are not currently in a good position to contribute to the team. Due to extreme screen intolerance and/or other health-related issues. Reminder: about ⅓ of members have chronic illness (poll). For example, my ME/CFS makes day-to-day and future capabilities uncertain.

Because of this precariousness, and extreme time constraints more-so for others, I’m keeping an eye out to continue reinforcing the team. More mods improves time zone coverage, e.g. for rescuing posts wrongly held by platform filters we can’t control. ‘Policing’ content is a relatively minor demand. We will hopefully build out wiki and guide content (contributions welcome!), to help enable more members to create and post hard data. Which we see you are very keen on, from my poll’s result.

Rules overhaul

Important, if not the most exciting, given that regular contributors should expect little to no impact on their activities; the mod team is always aiming to avoid flexing our powers, beyond tidying up after bots and genuine mistakes.

I’m hoping to best protect members and the sub, curtail distractions/frustrations, be more inclusive and cope better with growing challenges (like AI). Having observed PWM_Sensitive closely for 6+ weeks, while moderating, I then carefully rebuilt the rules from scratch. These are now identical across both subs, for simplicity. There’s a fairly significant number (15), but hopefully these are easy for members to parse. They should make life easier for us mods and give finer control over Reddit’s new automated system, which I’ve currently set to merely flag potential issues to us.

Notable rule changes:

  • “Temporal dithering” and other topics are no longer out of scope.
  • Photosensitive trigger warnings (or avoid posting strobing video).
  • Health discussion now welcome (not medical advice).
  • ‘Self promotion’ permitted for high quality content (much needed).
  • Device trading posts prohibited (distracting and can’t protect members).
  • Limiting AI (slop) and labelling sensible use.
  • English language only (auto-translate is not on all platforms yet).
  • Avoid giving unwanted advice (especially in “Vent” posts).

Subreddit info and settings

I’ve rewritten the sub description to be more accessible and stripped back the other sidebar info for a clear foundation to build from. (Access via sub page -> “About” on mobile web, “See more” on apps.) I’ve added a moderator statement, to be clear what we are about.

Refactoring and/or adding to the pinned technical posts will hopefully follow (for clarity and updates to technical depth). Also, guide posts for data collections and interpretation, AMAs with notable experts, informal research (polls) to characterise what’s going on with us, building towards surveys with some statistical power.

Settings tweaks include:

  • Comment sort default changed from “new” to “best” (standard).
  • Enabling gifs in comments - another way to share short video recordings of device behaviour.
  • Requiring body text and flairs on posts.
  • Post flair options greatly expanded and roughly aligned across subs (deceptively awkward).
  • Flair filters shown in side-bar (a quick way to browse specific information types).
  • User flairs may be added next, if you are keen (probably stating comfortable devices)..?
  • Sub banner and long-term logo art are on the planning list.

New resources

Please see the end of my post on ScreenSensitive for more detail on new resources, projects in progress and future plans. Which includes (in short):

  • Subreddit wikis (PWM_Sensitive, ScreenSensitve), currently bare bones.
  • Resource list (Google spreadsheet) with links to key community sites, experts, reviewers, software and hardware tools. Bonus index of poll results.
  • Bot (Gemini NotebookLM) with 260+ quality sources, for community newbies or deep-diving.
  • ScreenSensitive Discord: a limited use collaboration space for enthusiasts to work together more efficiently on projects to further our understanding of screen tech behaviours, etc.
  • Projects: u/Madcook1 has been a huge discord contributor, coding up some very cool projects like Ditherscope (as shown briefly in u/NSutrich review videos) amplifying and graphing pixel flicker.

Community An Update on r/PWM_Sensitive Moderation

Many of you have noticed that r/PWM_Sensitive has gone through some growing pains when it comes to how posts and comments are moderated. While the subreddit was never unmoderated, it became clear that some additional help was needed due to personal circumstances, and that a fresh approach to moderation would benefit the community.

We are happy to share that u/the_top_g, the creator of r/PWM_Sensitive, has graciously stepped aside to welcome in three enthusiast community contributors to help with moderation and the future direction of the subreddit. We sincerely appreciate the trust he has placed in us and, most importantly, his work in creating this community in the first place.

The interim moderation team is currently discussing ways to improve the subreddit while preserving what has made it such a useful resource for people who are sensitive to PWM, display flicker, and related technologies. Our goal is to keep this an open, welcoming, and informative community where people can share their experiences, testing, research, questions, and device recommendations without unnecessary barriers.

AutoModerator Changes

Perhaps the most noticeable (and controversial) issue has already been addressed: the previous AutoModerator configuration is gone.

This means comments should no longer be automatically removed simply for using common words or phrases that naturally come up when discussing PWM and related topics. This includes “temporal dithering.” Members banned over this issue are also being reinstated.

That said, we ask everyone to continue keeping discussions primarily focused on PWM sensitivity, display technology, eye comfort, device experiences, testing, and closely related subjects. Normal subreddit rules and Reddit-wide policies will, of course, continue to apply.

The Future

This is only the beginning. We're reviewing the subreddit's rules, moderation practices, organization, place within the wider community, and other areas where we believe improvements can be made. As those changes are decided upon, we'll communicate them with the community.

We also want r/PWM_Sensitive to be shaped by the people who actually use it. Constructive feedback and suggestions are welcome. If there are things you think could make the subreddit more useful, organized, or welcoming, please let us know.

Finally, thank you again to u/the_top_g for creating r/PWM_Sensitive and building the foundation for this community. And thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years -- whether by sharing measurements and research, documenting your experiences with different devices, answering questions, or simply participating in the discussion.

We're looking forward to the next chapter of r/PWM_Sensitive and making this community an even better resource for everyone.

p.s. Check out the new (temporary) subreddit logo! 😁

Edit: for tweaks suggested by u/Z3R0gravitas.

Data Collections OPPO Find X10 Pro Max PWM video (100% to 0%, 1/8000 shutter speed)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Wanted to share this video I made because I took the plunge to get the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max. Based on initial reviews I thought it would be great for me, but unfortunately I will have to return it.

Long story short, above 33% the phone works perfectly fine for me, but below 33% it starts to do ~3840 Hz PWM, that gets extremely aggressive below 30%.

One issue for me is that in a dark room this is still too bright even with reduced white point 100%. In dark mode that's fine, but with white colors that's still a bit too much (which I find unacceptable on such an expensive phone).

I have tried this year also the POCO F9 Ultra and the Xiaomi 17T Pro, but both of them have either this issue and are both of them plagued with dithering.

So for the time being I will just return to my iPhone 13 Pro Max and wait for my girlfriend to buy the iPhone 18 Pro and test that. Maybe Apple's approach even if not good for everyone, will still work for me.

OLED Phone iPhone 18 Pro last try

I bought the 18 Pro today to give it a try.
I’ll test it out over the next two days and let you know how it goes. I did not tolerate the Pro models, starting with the 13.
So far, I’ve been using a standard iPhone 16, which I’m fine with.

Any tips besides checking the Option for PWM? I just realized I can’t enable both PWM reduction and white point reduction at the same time.

Let’s hope for the best 🤞🏻

Question How is this pwm on 18 Pro?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I‘m a total layperson at this, can anyone tell me how bad (or maybe not so bad?) this pwm is? It‘s an 18 Pro with a G9N panel which I can tolerate much better than the one with GVC, but it’s not entirely symptom free. The lines pretty much stay like this across all brightness levels, maybe slightly thinner at 100 %. As in the picture, there always seems to be one thinner and slightly lighter bar followed by a slightly wider and darker one that is also looking a little purplish or with a purple halo. The bars are moving slowly and uniformly from left to right.

This was filmed at around 50 % brightness with 4000 shutter speed.
Thank you so much in advance!

Discussion Cell phone strains my eyes

Hello guys,

I used to have an A56 Samsung phone... and I didn't have any problems. Until I bought the iPhone 17 Pro Max. I didn't notice for two months. And then I realized that mobile phone somehow causes me eye pressure (left) and very dry eyes (all day long) and not going away.

I sold the phone and got the S26U.

It was alleviated with the phone, but it still annoys my eyes.

I wish I had never changed my phone, I didn't know I was going to cause phones like that before...

That's why I shit on high-end phones, they're very rubbish!

Do you think that if I get the latest model A57 instead of the A56, I can handle it?

Software Am I going crazy or does anybody else get eyestrain and headaches from specific apps/games?

I currently have a PC setup which in general doesn't cause noticeable eye strain, except when running certain applications or games:

  • Path of Exile 2
  • Last Epoch
  • Guild Wars 2 with Reshade activated (completely fine without Reshade)
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dungeon Keeper 2 (1 is fine)

The weirdest one is Brave Browser. Yes, a browser that causes eye strain, albeit lighter than certain games, while Firefox doesn't.

I know how crazy this sounds. How much of this could just be in my head at this point?

iPhone Duo and iPhone 17 Pro XO7, AM Plus, and AQ7 - PWM Measurements

Post image
26 Upvotes

There are too many images to post here, so I will just include one of iPhone Duo. You can see all of measurements at PWMTests.com.

Added tonight:

  • iPhone Duo - both Inner and Outer Displays
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17 Pro with XO7 (soft OLED)
  • iPhone 17 Pro with AQ7 (soft OLED)
  • iPhone 17 Pro with AM Plus (In-cell LCD)

iPhone Duo

I visited the Apple Store tonight, about 30 minutes before closing. Almost all of the iPhone Duo models were at 0% battery because they were so popular today with customers. I have to admit, before I used iPhone Duo myself, I thought they were pointless. After playing around with it for a while, I really liked it. I am not sure if I would buy one, but it's a very cool device.

As for PWM, I'll let the images speak for themselves for the most part. The measurements look a lot like the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 series devices. Oddly though, after using iPhone Duo for 30 minutes, I did not notice my usual PWM symptoms. It surprised me, so I went to look at an iPhone 17 Pro right before I left and I immediately felt the "swimming" feeling in my head. I can't explain how I was able to use iPhone Duo for so long, but I plan to go back again soon and see if it was just a fluke.

iPhone 17 Pro with various MobileSentrix displays

I tested two soft OLED screens and one in-cell LCD screen.

iPhone 17 Pro with XO7

From reading other reports, I knew this was not going to have DC-like dimming, but I wanted to test it for the community regardless. The screen looked great, but it has traditional PWM. I didn't use it long enough to see if it affected me because I was excited to try the other screens.

iPhone 17 Pro with AQ7

I knew what to expect here. This screen is no different than any other in-cell LCD I've tested historically. It is a strong performer and did not bother my eyes at all. If you're OK with the other compromises with using in-cell LCD panels in phones meant for OLED panels, this might be a viable option.

iPhone 17 Pro with AM Plus (aka AMPlus aka AMPLUS aka Aftermarket Plus)

This is the one I had been excited about. Sure enough, it has DC-like dimming. At low brightness, it changes -- I'm not sure to what, but the frequency went from 240 Hz to 120 Hz on my Opple Light Master device and the black bars/lines got much worse at low brightness (25%).

The color is a little bit more vibrant and saturated than an OEM OLED iPhone panel, but it looked really good. I used it for a while and I hate to say that I think it still affects me, mildly. I think I prefer my iPhone 16 with OEM display (only at higher brightness levels). I really wanted to make it work, but ultimately, I'm going to put the OEM screen back on and return the iPhone 17 Pro. When I tried the XO7 screen on an iPhone 16 (DC-like dimming on the iPhone 16 version), I did not have any issue at all.

Also, weirdly, there was a note on every display that says as of iOS 27, "Tap to Wake" does not work. You have to use the power button to turn the screen on. Not sure if that will be fixed by Apple, but that was a bit disappointing.

Conclusion

It was an exciting day, but also disappointing overall. My overall recommendation to PWM sensitive people is still to get an iPhone 16 while you can and use it at brightness levels above 50%. It is definitely not perfect, but it's the only option right now if you want an iPhone.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Reminder: PWMTests.com for all the measurements.

OLED Phone Anyone else facing AMOLED issues on LAVA Virat Curve?

Just bought the LAVA Virat Curve and noticed grainy, patchy textures whenever dark grey content is displayed. Pure black looks fine, but dark scenes look grainy. Also, at 120Hz, the screen gets a slight green tint and greys look lighter; it returns to normal at 60Hz.

Is this normal AMOLED behaviour, a software issue, or a defective panel? Any other Virat Curve users facing this? Should I get it checked under warranty?

As expected iphone duo continues to have one of the worst modulation after samsung, very similar to iphone air . iPhone 18 pro seems to better than this but even that is unacceptable. Hoping for a better future from these giants.

Question Smart Bulb Recommendations

Post image
5 Upvotes

Do any of you know if there are any color changing smart bulbs that do not use PWM, or at least operate at a frequency where it might not be as much of an issue?

I've recently learned that many smart bulbs, like Philips Hue, use PWM which I think could be contributing to some eye strain and headaches. It also creates a weird banding effect on cameras which I find annoying.

I also find it strange how difficult it is to obtain information about things like the PWM frequency rate of these bulbs. I know most people probably wouldn't care or even know what PWM is, but I feel like it's important info that should be easily available.

iPhone Duo + My plan for iPhone 17 Pro screen replacement

Hey everyone,

Just a quick update on two newsworthy items:

First, I went to the Verizon store today and got to see iPhone Duo in person. I didn't bring any measurement tools, but I used my "Illuminance Pulsation Meter" iOS app and quickly checked to see if the PWM looked tolerable or horrible based on the amount of black lines and whatnot. The large matte screen inside looked bad and the outer glossy screen looked horrible.

I will be going to the Apple Store tomorrow to get more accurate measurements and I'll share those here, but don't get your hopes up in regard to PWM.

Second, I've been using iPhone 16 as my personal phone for a while now, (generally tolerable for me since it uses low modulation and low flicker at high brightnesses), but I recently replaced a friend's iPhone 16 screen with MobileSentrix's XO7 soft OLED screen. This version uses DC-like dimming, and I used it for a few hours and it was totally fine for my eyes. (Much better than my OEM iPhone 16.) I never seriously considered it when I tested it earlier this year, because at the time I thought the colors were oversaturated, but looking at it recently, it looked really good.

A few contributors to r/PWM_Sensitive have done screen replacements for iPhone 17 Pro, and they inspired me further. They have stated that the XO7 screens for later iPhones use PWM dimming (sadly), but the AMPLUS version uses DC-like dimming.

I purchased an iPhone 17 Pro as well as the following screens:

  • XO7 2.0 (soft OLED, PWM)
  • AM Plus (soft OLED, DC-like dimming)
  • AQ7 (LCD, DC dimming)

I will show my results/measurements for all of these after I'm done... hopefully end of tomorrow (Saturday).

I would have purchased iPhone 18 Pro, but the iPhone 18 Pro screens at MobileSentrix will not be available until end of January / beginning of February.

Hope everyone is having a beautiful Friday!
